The 1UP Report: Roadmap For Q2 2018 And Steemit Proposal

Introduction

In this post you will learn more about the future of 1UP - The only automated hivemind curation trail on the Steem blockchain. I will present the ideas for the Q2 of 2018 and where this project is heading. As you will see 1UP has started exclusively for Utopian.io but will evolve into a much broader curation system that opens its arms to ALL platforms and communities. This is endeavor is easy on a technical level but difficult on a financial one as each platform and communit will need a system providing Steem Power. This post will clarify the problem and the solutions.

Status Quo

Currently 1UP has been successfully integrated into the browser extension @steem-plus from @stoodkev. All posts that are accepted by a moderator activate the 1UP button to allow everyone with a reputation of 45 and more to give one of ten daily 1UPs. These posts will land on the 1UP Ranking Page where the top post will be upvoted automatically by the 1UP curation trail every 2.4 hours. As of today there are amazing 317 accounts following the trail - tendency growing. The curation rewards for all trailers are massive and according to my own estimation about 150% higher than random manual curation.

The latest addition to 1UP is the feature to upvote posts directly on the ranking page after logging in with the secure Steemconnect system.

Features That Are Yet To Come To Utopian-1UP

Finding ALL Eligable Posts On The 1UP Page

The next features we will integrate into the existing platform for the Utopian-1UP will be to include ALL eligable posts to the ranking page for easier navigation. Currently you only find the posts that have received one or more 1UPs. Soon we will show you all posts that are within the brief 1UP time window after a moderator accepted the post and before the @utopian-io whale account strikes. That feature will make it easier for everyone to find the best posts and directly upvote them from the 1UP page. This will include a a sorting function as well.

Integrating The 1UP Button Into Steemit and Busy

One of the features we will integrate will be to bring the 1UP button to Steemit.com and Busy.org. These two platforms are much more frequently used than Utopian.io which will increase the chance for everyone to use the 1UP button from their preferred platform. Next to having all eligable posts on the 1UP page this will truely open up the accessibility of 1UP.

Opening 1UP To Other Platform and Communities

1UP For DTube, DLive, DSound, dMania and Co.

1UP has become the state-of-the-art curation system for the Steem blockchain. There is no other system in place that allows to find and reward truely valuable posts. As Steem works with the Proof-of-Stake system usually posts that are paid-for with upvote bots or posts that found a generous whale with plenty of Steem Power will make it to the attention of the wider network.

Bringing 1UP to DTube and co. to handle their huge Steem Power delegations would be another. Currently DTube is manually upvoting video posts which leads to very narrow decision making and on top of that having idle times where the voting power sits at 100% and does not create any curation rewards for the platform creating huge opportunity costs for the platform owners.

Bringing 1Up to Manual Curation Trails

Additionally there are a few manual curation trails that reward great posts like @curie. These curation trails require a massive effort of the owners to search and find the content they are curation. These systems are amazing and a very neccessary addition to spread upvotes to more people. However, the execution is still very subjective and labor intensive.

1UP is the answer to all manual curation trails aiming for quality. Combining 1UP with @curie and similar system is just one of many use-cases which would be ideal for this system. In fact, there are thousands of communities with their own reward system which are all done manually by hand and without the consensus of the majority of each community as there is always one or a few people managing the trails. 1UP will allow the entire community to cast their votes and decide which post will get rewarded through majority vote.

Problems 1UP Is Facing

1UP Needs A Whale Account To Make Lucrative Curation Possible

The idea of 1UP was born on Utopian where a guaranteed whale upvote will follow AFTER the curation trail has upvoted the best posts. This will make the curation for all trailers lucrative and hence interesting to use their valuable Steem Power partly for this system. Many who follow the trail have only the monetary aspect in mind. The benfit for the Utopian platform and community is a nice addition but often not the deciding factor. Adding 1UP to other platforms will only find as much interest as on Utopian if we can guarantee a whale upvote following their own trails there as well.

DTube and co. have all delegated Steem Power which could partly or in its entirety be used to boost the 1UP-voted posts by trusting the decision making of the community using the 1UP system on these platforms. A dialogue between the platform owners has to be initiated in which their specific needs can be found to adjust the 1UP functionality for each platform. So far I have not gotten any feedback from DTube after contacting @heimindanger. I hope to establish a conversation with him and his team to create a second use case and show the other platforms the massive advantages of using 1UP for big platforms.

Gamifying The Use Of The 1UP Button

Another problem that 1UP is facing that currently there is no incentive to use the button in the first place besides doing something nice for others. Sadly, this is usually not enough to adopt a wide usage. hence, there will be a change to the system required which will allow for better gamification of the 1UP system. The first thought that comes to mind is creating ranking pages and titles for frequent users. Also, there could be a smart curation trail that reshuffles the trail order and puts the early upvoters to the front of the trail. With such a system every upvoter who is also following the trail will get a greater financial benefit from using the button in the first place.

Finding Steem Power Delegations For Higher Rewards And Profitability

The final addition to 1UP for making it an ideal system for everybody will be by using the @boost-1up account we have created and fill it with massive amounts of Steem Power. This account will follow the trailers and upvote the posts after them - but still before the whale upvote from the according platform. Finding sponsors is a tricky business and even more difficult when it does "only" create curation rewards which are paid out in Steem Power. Finding an incentive for Steem Power holders to delegate their power to this account will be very difficult.

The only really viable solution to this would be to get an official Steemit.inc sponsorship which allows the 1UP system to create massive upvotes for the best posts. The result would be that we will create a totally new upvote system for the entire Steem ecosystem. Currently there are tons of low valuable posts on the top of the trending page. Some might call this one of Steemits BIGGEST problems. New users see only these posts and barely find anything good to read. This is bad for all of us! if Steemit.inc delegates one millions Steem Power to 1UP we would be able to create a super booster for all platform trails 1UP is supporting and make it MUCH more lucrative for trailers to join the cause and support 1UP with their votes. The posts receiving 1UPs would shoot up in the trending pages and hopefully even dominate them. This would negate the current problem to a huge degree.

Boosting the @boost-1up with a Steemit delegation would allow us to support all platforms and create 1UP systems directly for them and immediately make this system incredibly attractive to all content creators. The result would be that we will see more quality on the trending page as well as generally as authors will thrive to increase their quality to aim for receiving 1UPs.

@heimindanger has contacted me and voiced concerns about potential abuse with such a system. We will counter that with regular analysis reports via Utopian.io and with blacklists where all abusers will land on. Any post that has been upvoted in an abusive way will be devoted again. There are many mechanisms we can implement to make this as safe an secure as we all want.
