Hello, here I am to post the 30th Node.js translation report and again it is about the 9th version of the change log file. I'm very excited, 30 is a big number and that means satisfaction to me because I have been contributing constantly and getting better every day. I started this project two months ago with a lot of motivation because contributing in open source projects is a way to make those project's scopes bigger. My way to contribute is translating Node.js into Spanish, and I must say that it is not only me, there is an entire team working on it and this team is supported by Utopian+DaVinci alliance.

I will keep working hard in this project because I have learned a lot from it and I want this knowledge to have a bigger scope. I must say that during these two months my expertise has been improved each time that I receive a feedback from language moderators and that's also important to me.

Project Details

Node.js is an open-source, cross-platform JavaScript run-time environment that executes JavaScript code outside of a browser. It lets developers use JavaScript to write Command Line tools and for server-side scripting to produce dynamic web page content before the page is sent to the user's web browser. Consequently, Node.js represents a "JavaScript everywhere" paradigm,[6] unifying web application development around a single programming language, rather than different languages for server side and client side scripts.

Node.js

It looks difficult to understand at first, but let me explain it with the next example.

Imagine that you have been developing a new android app that uses the APIs from Google Maps and Twitter. When testing the app, you realize that both APIs are written in different languages and you must change one of them to make it work, but that's a lot of work and goes against the reasons to use an API. Node.js is the solution to problems like this because it allows the union between different programming languages without affecting its performance.

I decided to translate this project because I'm an engineering student and innovation is my passion; I love creating solutions to problems like this. Also, I like sharing information and a way to do it is translating the content of a big project like this so people around the world can access to it and share it too.

Contribution Specifications

  • Translation Overview

The last few weeks I've been working in change log files, specifically the 9th version of Node.js change log file. Studying this file I found very interesting concepts that are very important to understand Node.js but those concept are hidden among the document, normally at the beginning of each version where the most significant changes are mentioned. For example, in previous posts I have talked about those interesting concepts. I hope you read this file to see what I'm talking about.

Talking about these concepts hidden in the file, I found a very interesting one, the dependencies. Dependencies (also known as deps) are a set of libraries and tools that make Node.js works the way it does. Some examples of these libraries are: V8, libuv and OpenSSL; there are also some tools: npm, gyp and gtest.

V8

The V8 library provides Node.js with a JavaScript engine, which Node.js controls via the V8 C++ API. V8 is maintained by Google, for use in Chrome.

libuv

Another important dependency is libuv, a C library that is used to abstract non-blocking I/O operations to a consistent interface across all supported platforms. It provides mechanisms to handle file system, DNS, network, child processes, pipes, signal handling, polling and streaming. It also includes a thread pool for offloading work for some things that can't be done asynchronously at the operating system level.

OpenSSL

OpenSSL is used extensively in both the tls and crypto modules. It provides battle-tested implementations of many cryptographic functions that the modern web relies on for security.

npm

Node.js is all about modularity, and with that comes the need for a quality package manager; for this purpose, npm was made. With npm comes the largest selection of community-created packages of any programming ecosystem, which makes building Node.js apps quick and easy.

gyp

The build system is handled by gyp, a python-based project generator copied from V8. It can generate project files for use with build systems across many platforms. Node.js requires a build system because large parts of it — and its dependencies — are written in languages that require compilation.

  • Language

The original language of this change log is English and it was translated into Spanish, which is my native language. I have experience translating in projects like Loopring wallet and Yapbam. These projects make me grow and learn a lot about open source projects.

Hi @navx,

Congratulations on your 30th contribution to Node.js!

  • This is a very interesting project that contains many code values and terms related to computer science. Its difficulty relies on the fact that we must pay a lot of attention to the code in order to deliver the most accurate translation possible. Therefore, I applaud all the effort you've been doing in the past couple of weeks!

  • Your presentation post explains all the basic details about the project and you also shared useful examples and concepts. Just remember to always be careful with the writing of your post since it is a report that shows your skills as a translator.

  • You did a very good job with your translation. The vocabulary you used is correct and appropriate for the Spanish language, as well for the project. Despite being a project mainly destined for programmers you have adapted to the terminology very quickly and that's awesome :)

Keep up the good work!
