Open Source projects are more than just projects, they are a way to create and innovate with the help of the global community, to unite people and achieve great things through collaborative work.

To collaborate in these projects there are many areas: development, improvement, visualization, among others that add up and are of immense importance for its success. In this case, I have decided to participate as a translator of Open Source projects, with support from Utopian + DaVinci, to allow Spanish-speaking people to understand, have easy access and, why not, participate as well.

For some time now I have been working on the Spanish translation of the Node.js project, whose purpose will be explained in this post. I hope you find it useful.

Project Details

Node.js is an Open Source project multiplatform run-time envirorment. It is based on ECMAScript language, is asynchronus and based on the V8 Google engine. It was created to unify web application development in one single programming language.

I'm an engineering student at Simón Bolívar University in Venezuela and one of my tastes is programming, because it is a fairly extensive world in which each day something new is learned.Node.js is a new way of viewing programming, because it allows you to relate different languages in a single code, in order to create innovative and multifunctional programs and that's why I started translating this beautiful project.

Contribution Specifications

  • Translation Overview

As I have been working on my last post, I continued with the translation of Node.js Changelogs, in this case version 9. A Changelog is a record of all the changes that have been made as a program is updated , that is, the detailed description of the updates. These are the reason of being of the versions of a software.

For Open Source projects, these records are very important, because they are changes and improvements made by ALL the collaborating members and, since there are so many, there may be a risk of not registering any (may affect future changes on it), or even not giving it the credit to who deserves it.

In the next image you can find a brief list of some of the improvements an changes registered on 9th version of Node.js Changelog.

  • Language

The original language of the changelog is English and was translated into Spanish, which is my native language. I must say that the revisions of each of my translations have allowed me to advance correctly through the different translations and have given me great experience and desire to continue growing and collaborating in this great project.

Some examples of my translation are the following:

  • English

[<0>71d09ecbf1] - <1>doc: make the background section concise and improve its formality (Wilson) <2>#18928

- Spanish

[<0>71d09ecbf1] - <1>doc: hacer que la sección de fondo sea concisa y mejorar su formalidad (Wilson) <2>#18928

Learned Concepts

When performing translations, new expressions are presented that are unknown to the translator, which is why there is a need to investigate and find the right meaning; in this case, as it is a project related to programming languages, it is even more necessary that the translation is correct, to avoid errors that can completely change the meaning of the entire expression.

In this opportunity I learned about the primitives. This expression refers to primitive Java data. Originally I understood it as the primary formation of the functions, however, after the revision, they explained to me the true meaning of the word in this context.
