This is post 1 of Mission: Agua-Possible! My goal is to collaborate with others on Steemit to buy a struggling Venezuelan family a pump for their well, so they can supply water for themselves and their neighborhood!
The Background
Briefly, this is how I came to be writing this post. A couple months ago, I began to notice an influx of Steemians from Venezuela. Some of them commented on my posts and I got to know them a little. I checked out some of their profiles, and found they were talking about a desperate crisis going on around them! I'd heard, in general, about problems with the Venezuelan economy, as I follow such things. But through my new friends, I soon learned the dark reality of what's happening there.
Even in the past month, things have worsened drastically. The socialist president Maduro devalued the currency overnight, and instituted price-controls on many basic items. Food has become scarce, with long lineups and much disappointment for the hungry. Even baby formula and medications are now running out everywhere in the country. Quality of life has dropped rapidly, and millions of people are literally on the brink of complete disaster. Those who can are escaping the country on foot, to anywhere they can go. Looting, crime, violence, and other desperate acts are becoming more commonplace. The government uses propaganda on its people. Those who resist become silenced, or even go missing. Most of the world is unaware just how tragic the situation is, and how many lives are hanging from a thread.
Here, I identified 4 worthwhile recipients of some financial aid, and pledged the post payout. After one week, I was able to give each of my 4 Venezuelan friends 1.0 Steem, which converts to a significant sum of local currency (Bolivars). As I said there, "I wish we could do something larger and more impactful."
Mission Agua-possible is that something!
Meet Edgar
Edgar won't know about Mission Agua-possible until he reads this thread, but I believe he will be pleased (although perhaps a little shy). This information is correct to the best of my knowledge, but keep in mind, Edgar's English isn't great, and my Spanish is terrible. We use translators (and my wife @MediKatie's linguistic skills) to communicate. Due to limitations on each end, we only have Steemit for getting to know each other, but he's a good writer, and he takes regular photos of himself and his surroundings.
I've only known him for a few weeks, but I find him to be a good guy. Edgar (@edgargonzalez) was a middle-class working professional before things went bad in his country. He lost his father - a cassava farmer - a few years ago, and inherited the family's small farm. He now has a 1-year-old son (Edgar junior) that he is very proud of. Unfortunately, without his regular income, Edgar has had to resort to increasingly desperate tactics to keep food on the table.
Just a couple weeks ago, Edgar was telling me how he took some fishing line and hooks down to the ocean in search of food. He was able to fish from an old raft and catch dinner for the family, but nearly drowned when the raft broke apart and sunk! Yesterday, he went diving, and found some mussels to bring home and cook. When I asked him about the risk, his reply hit me hard: "Need obliges us to do that, friend."
The Pump
Like many other basic parts of society, municipal water utilities are not working in most parts of Venezuela. People collect rainwater, many stand in lineups to fill a bucket, those who can afford to buy it. Water is life, and without regular access to clean drinking water, society breaks down quickly.
When I met Edgar, he told me that his father had left him a well with natural spring water, and a large pump that reaches 42 meters down to bring up the water. Edgar has been using this water to irrigate his cassava plants. It also supplies water for his family and a few other families in the neighborhood without other access.
About a week ago, a power outage shorted the pump's electronics, and burned out the pump, shutting the water off to Edgar's neighborhood and plantation!
He spent a whole day pulling the 9-year-old pump apart, and another day bringing in a technician to assess the damage. Finally, he got the bad news and passed it to me: A cheap repair isn't possible, and a new pump is probably the only way to get water back to the neighborhood.
When Edgar told me the bad news, I asked him how much a new pump would cost. He was reluctant to answer, but I asked again, and he told me with resignation that it was 1300 US Dollars - "es muchisimo dinero".
Problem, Reaction, Solution
My reaction to this problem is to formulate a solution!
While Edgar and his neighborhood have very little chance of coming up with the money to buy the pump they need, considering their already impoverished situation, I could use Steemit to raise the funds, and use Steemit to get them to Edgar! From there, he can convert to USD or Bolivars and pay for the pump.
Steemit has everything needed to make this happen, from start to finish! And I'm going to do it!
Mission: Auga-possible
Our mission, if we choose to accept it, is to gather enough Steem to convert to 1300 US Dollars (the local price of a proper Steel pump). This will instantly provide years of clean drinking water to several families and a small farm in crisis-stricken Venezuela.
1300 US at current prices is about 1500 Steem. While a lot, it's absolutely doable. It could take months, or we could find the 1500 Steem in a few days, it all depends who we reach, and how compelled we feel to make this happen! I don't intend to give up, so it's not a matter of "if" - it's only a matter of "when".
Because Steemit wallets and transactions are so transparent, I feel fine about collecting the funds and passing them on to Edgar. I'll keep track of everything which has been donated, in a running tally in a weekly post. All proceeds from my Mission: Auga-possible posts will go toward the pump!

Este es el puesto uno de Mission: Agua-Possible! Mi objetivo es colaborar con otros en Steemit para comprar una familia venezolana luchando por su pozo, para que puedan abastecer de agua para ellos y para su vecindario.
Brevemente, así es como llegué a escribir este post. Hace un par de meses, comencé a notar una afluencia de Steemians de Venezuela. Algunos de ellos comentaron sobre mis mensajes y llegué a conocerlos un poco. Revisé algunos de sus perfiles, y encontré que estaban hablando de una crisis desesperada pasando a su alrededor! Yo había oído, en general, sobre los problemas con la economía venezolana, como sigo tales cosas. Pero a través de mis nuevos amigos, pronto aprendí la oscura realidad de lo que está sucediendo allí.
Incluso en el último mes, las cosas se han agravado drásticamente. El presidente socialista maduro devaluado la moneda de la noche a la mañana e instituyó controles de precios en muchos artículos básicos. La comida se ha vuelto escasa, con largas formaciones y mucha decepción para los hambrientos. Incluso la fórmula del bebé y los medicamentos se están agotando en todas partes del país. La calidad de vida ha disminuido rápidamente, y millones de personas están literalmente al borde de un desastre total. Los que pueden escapar del país a pie, a cualquier lugar que puedan ir. El saqueo, el crimen, la violencia y otros actos desesperados se están volviendo más comunes. El gobierno utiliza propaganda sobre su pueblo. Los que se resisten se silencian, o incluso desaparecidos. La mayor parte del mundo no sabe qué tan trágica es la situación y cuántas vidas cuelgan de un hilo.
Identifiqué a 4 beneficiarios valiosos de alguna ayuda financiera, y comprometí el pago del poste. Después de una semana, fui capaz de dar a cada uno de mis 4 amigos venezolanos 1,0 autoestima, que se convierte en una importante suma de moneda local (Bolívares). Como dije allí, "me gustaría que pudiéramos hacer algo más grande y más impactante."
Edgar no sabrá de Mission agua-posible hasta que lea este hilo, pero creo que estará complacido (aunque quizás un poco tímido). Esta información es correcta al mejor de mi conocimiento, pero tenga en cuenta, el Inglés de Edgar no es genial, y mi español es terrible. Utilizamos traductores (y las habilidades lingüísticas de mi esposa @MediKatie) para comunicarse. Debido a las limitaciones de cada extremo, sólo tenemos Steemit para llegar a conocernos, pero es un buen escritor, y toma fotos regulares de sí mismo y de su entorno.
Sólo lo conozco desde hace unas semanas, pero lo encuentro un buen tipo. Edgar era un profesional de la clase media antes de que las cosas fueran mal en su país. Perdió a su padre hace unos años-un agricultor de yuca-y heredó la pequeña granja de la familia. Ahora tiene un hijo de 1 año de edad (Edgar Junior) del que está muy orgulloso. Desafortunadamente, sin sus ingresos regulares, Edgar ha tenido que recurrir a tácticas cada vez más desesperadas para mantener la comida sobre la mesa.
Hace un par de semanas, Edgar me estaba diciendo cómo tomó una línea de pesca y se engancha al océano en busca de comida. Fue capaz de pescar en una vieja balsa y tomar la cena para la familia, pero casi se ahogó cuando la balsa se rompió y se hundió! Ayer, se fue a bucear, y encontró algunos mejillones para llevar a casa y cocinar. Cuando le pregunté sobre el riesgo, su respuesta me golpeó duro: "Necesidad nos obliga a hacer eso, amigo."
Como muchas otras partes básicas de la sociedad, los servicios municipales de agua no están funcionando en la mayor parte de Venezuela. La gente recoge el agua de lluvia, muchos se paran en formaciones para llenar un balde, aquellos que pueden darse el lujo de comprarlo. El agua es vida, y sin el acceso regular al agua potable, la sociedad se descompone rápidamente.
Cuando conocí a Edgar, me dijo que su padre le había dejado un pozo con agua natural de manantial, y una gran bomba que alcanza los 42 metros de altura para sacar el agua. Edgar ha estado usando esta agua para regar sus plantas de yuca. También provee agua para su familia y algunas otras familias en el vecindario sin otro acceso.
Hace una semana, un apagón corto la electrónica de la bomba, y quemó la bomba, cerrando el agua al vecindario de Edgar y la plantación!
Pasó un día entero tirando de la bomba de 9 años de diferencia, y otro día trayendo a un técnico para evaluar el daño. Finalmente, él recibió las malas noticias y se la pasó a mí: una reparación barata no es posible, y una nueva bomba es probablemente la única manera de conseguir el agua de nuevo al vecindario.
Cuando Edgar me contó las malas noticias, le pregunté cuánto costaría una bomba nueva. Se resistía a responder, pero le pregunté de nuevo, y me dijo con resignación que era de 1300 dólares USD - "es muchisimo dinero ".
¡ mi reacción ante este problema es formular una solución!
Mientras que Edgar y su vecindario tienen muy pocas posibilidades de llegar con el dinero para comprar la bomba que necesitan, teniendo en cuenta su situación ya empobrecida, podría utilizar Steemit para recaudar los fondos, y utilizar Steemit para llevarlos a Edgar! Excelente iniciativa. Comparto contigo @franciscana23 lo que escribes acerca de la dificultad de reponer cualquier cosa que se dañe en el hogar. Hasta un bombillo incandescente se ha vuelto imposible de reponer para muchas familias. en general, no es nada fácil la situación que estamos sobrellevando o padeciendo. Desde los estratos mas bajos hasta los que pudieran estar un poco mas arriba.

Nuestro país está actualmente pasando por una calamidad que a veces cuesta creer, sin embargo, queda de parte de nosotros mismos sobrellevar todo este descalabro al que llegamos. Es necesario reflexionar y armarnos de valor y voluntad para salir de este atolladero. Personalmente, al leer este post, agradezco grandemente ese gesto que se está llevando para procurar del vital liquido a muchos compatriotas que no lo tienen.

A mi me parece increible es que no haya agua en san cristobal y las personas se bañen en las calles con lo que puedan conseguir de agua xD
