Over the years , there have been massive efforts to build capacity in Elkhart County and its surroundings. This is primarily due to the influx of labor to support the ever expanding recreational vehicle industry. These "workationers", a term for workers who travel from another city county or state, sometime find the area refreshing enough to make a nest and call home. As new housing sprang and road and bridges, the development of our waterways fall to the background. These same channels where history were made, trade deals executed, are now pace where migrant ducks and Canadian geese congregate.
As a town with a vibrant college, recreational activities like kayaking, paddle-boating, canoeing, angling needn't be a coed thing where it could be more. It could very well be a tourist thing. Top 3 solution to this challenge would be to
- convey a stakeholder meeting to discuss tourism ideas for local water ways
- develop a community-centric plan for specific waterway tourist attractions
- Encourage public and private sector participation in the execution of this community-minded waterway plan.
