This is something that has been discussed a lot but I just noticed the change has been made to the condenser to allow 100 witnesses to be easily voted on via the witness page.
I think this is a good change as it allows users to see the majority of active witnesses. It isn't until around 90 witnesses will produce a block on a regular basis. So I consider showing the top 100 witnesses a good number. As always you can manually vote for anyone regardless of their position.
I am not sure if the UI issue that causes users to vote for a witness, unvote them, and vote them again (if you're lucky to get that far) is fixed. If so, this is a very big deal as I see this happen very often with new votes.

I just happened to stumble upon it, like most of the condenser changes.
I spoke to a couple of the people who've voted for us today and they mentioned seeing us 'unchecked' in the list.
A huge step forward imo.
What happens once somebody becomes a witness?
They go campaigning for votes by doing cool stuff or begging for votes. Usually the second.
Ok and what happens then? They get paid for being a witness?
If they are high enough on the list, you produce blocks, and for each block produced you get Steem Power.

I was searching about Unknown fact related to Steem and I got a port which was written by a witness approx 2 years back.
and at that time there was only 23 or 25 witness were exit and It is good for Steem community that currently there of more than 100 witness in this community.
And Community is growing up day by day.

There is a witness in the top 100 that is still voted there even though they were disabled over 1.5 years ago. There is one in the top 50 that was disabled 3 months ago.

There are a lot of witnesses and only so many spots. Many are very active. Many not so much.

Not quite on topic but...I'm building a Steemit Witness server but stuck.
I got close to syncing the blockchain with steemd --replay-blockchain, but then like a noob did a Ctrl-C thinking a safe exit would mean i could go back...apparently not. Anytime I run steemd --replay-blockchain now it comes up and says "block log exception" and won't go further. Trying to get support for a new Witness is hard. Any chance you could help?
Not looking to be in top 19 or anything more then happy to be a backup as I just want to learn more how it all works.

Yeah no worries...have rebuilt whole server from scratch with favourite tweaks and tools, everything is sweet. This time I'm gonna back up/image the whole thing before running the replay once its down (not gonna get caught on that one again). Thanks for replying Cheers

Thanks for the update. Just rechecked my witness votes now and made a few changes.
Interesting that even though some witnesses are disabled for many weeks they are still in some top slots. Surely their votes should be discounted to allow for others to move up the list.
I noticed that change a few days back when Pharesim announced he was over and out.
I think it's a good thing to have 100 listed and visible. That said, most people still don't know squat about what a "witness" is. Which is sort of a problem.
Actually (just my opinion) one of our biggest problems is that the Steemit front end stinks rather heavily of being "developer created FOR developers." It's shades of the very early Internet, where the nerds were very covetous of "their" invention and wanted to (secretly) keep it as shrouded in technical jargon as possible to keep "Susie Housewife" from getting online.
OK, maybe that's an exaggeration, but we really need to "de-technify" a bunch of this stuff if this place it to EVERY gain something that even resembles a mainstream following.
As far a witness listings go, seems to me that top-100 listing might include a small space for each witness (maybe 250 or 500 characters) to write a micro bio of why someone should vote for them.
