Exploring the Maximilian Museum in Augsburg

Hey everyone, first of all I would like to welcome you all to my new post and hope your week is full of interesting experiences! Today I would like to share a unique experience with you which I made in the city of Augsburg and hope you like my contribution.

Augsburg is a very unique city for me and I enjoyed my visits there very much and it's one of the oldest cities in Bavaria and compared to others in the country it puts a lot in the shade. The Romans were already here over a thousand years ago and an important time for the city was the time of the Roman Empire in which the soldiers of Emperor Augustus built their camps here and over the centuries, it developed more and more into a flourishing metropolis which is known for the numerous old buildings and the diverse culture. Especially those who are interested in cities with ancient cultures should not miss Augsburg and if it's considered that the history is almost two thousand years old, it can be compared with other countries or cities which usually only exist for a few hundred years. The old town is extremely beautiful and when someone walks through the streets it's almost as if you were left in another time and there are many sights in the city that show how important the maintenance of culture is for the city. During my visit, I noticed that the inhabitants are generally very proud of their culture and of course rightly so and the special thing is that the climate does not quite prevail there as in other cities and I would personally describe it as a mixture of a village and a city and there are definitely differences to other parts of the country when it comes to mentality and I found that people here are particularly open.

One of the sights I visited here is the Maximilian Museum which is located in the middle of the old town and is one of the largest museums in the city in which various topics are illuminated. Due to the central location it is very easy to reach and can also be connected with other sights which are nearby and I would generally say that about three days are necessary to explore the most important facets of the whole city. Back to the museum which already has a centuries-old history behind it was opened during the 19th century and the aim of the museum is to report about the history as well as culture and here you can see a considerable collection of various objects or works of art. The building in which the museum is located is even much older and dates back almost to the end of the Middle Ages and it used to serve various purposes and was mainly used as accommodation until it was bought by the former city administration to promote the culture of the city. Interesting is probably also the name which probably often leaves open questions and is confused with other personalities but it was named after the well-known former King of Bavaria Maximilian II (1811 - 1864) from the House of the Wittelsbach who was fascinated by the city and visited it often and therefore the people decided to name the museum after him.

The museum is really extremely large and everyone who should plan a visit has to expect about 4 hours and there is something to see in addition to the various exhibitions in the interior also outside and I think the outdoor area is even accessible free of charge while for others an entrance fee of a few euros is required and the museum is except Monday otherwise opened the whole week. It's also important to know that Sunday is a special day here and also referred to as the day of museums and those who are in the city on this day can enjoy free admission to various museums and this initiative probably has a positive effect on the culture as more people visit it. Otherwise, the normal admission amounts to 7€ which is definitely fair for what is offered and visitors can look forward to an extensive exhibition which answers all questions about the history of the city.

There are many different works of art to see here and what I personally liked very much was the extremely large exhibition on the art of blacksmithing and what many may not even know is that numerous goldsmiths were once active here and it can be described as one of the most important cities in Bavaria or even Europe when it comes to the history of the forges. Even today there are still numerous goldsmiths in the city and if you walk through the old town, you will come across one or the other, but there used to be numerous more in the past and in the museum many coat of arms of all the goldsmiths can be seen and I found it very interesting how deeply the art of blacksmithing is connected with Augsburg. In addition to goldsmithing, there was also a lot presented by silversmiths in the museum and the collection of blacksmithing is one of the largest I have seen so far. There are also many sculptures, antique furniture, paintings or other old objects that make a visit a unique experience and who should be in Augsburg should not miss a visit to the Maximilian Museum and I would like to mention again that it is necessary to bring a lot of time to make the most of the visit.
