ASSAM - the Land of My origin

Assam (also pronounced as 'Asom') is situated in the North Eastern part of India which lies in the bank of the mighty river Brahmaputra.Being one among the Seven Sisters of India, My Motherland is known for its rich cultural heritage. It is the home to most of the population of one horned rhinoceroses which is also the state animal of Assam. The economy of Assam is aided by wildlife tourism to Kaziranga National Park and Manas National Park which are World heritage sites. A diversity of flora and fauna can be found in the forests of Assam.

The economy of Assam is mainly based on agriculture and oil. Most of the people living here is involved in tea plantations ,production of rice ,jute ,sugarcane etc. It holds one of the largest oil refineries of India,the Digboi Oil Refinery.


Assam developed a hybrid culture due to assimilation of different ethno-cultural groups of Austria, Tibeto- Burma and Tai origin. The ancient culture is still given importance and practiced all over the State. Tamul-Pan, Xorai and Gamusa are the three symbolic elements of the Assamese culture. There are diversified traditional festivals in Assam. Among them 'Bihu' is considered as the most important festival. Assam is famous for its fine arts and traditional crafts. It is also famous for the golden silk 'Muga' which is used to produce silk garments.

Being the only part of India that remained liberated from the Mughal rule, Assam stands as a symbol of the mighty Ahom empire in the map of India.
