Fear of Death - "A Poem"

in #writinglast year

The dead are gone
Instead
Fear the living
And even they
Will rot away
In time
Why not
Leave fear along the way
Chase life
With motivated feet
Reach for it
With both arms outstretched
Taste it on your tongue
Drink and breathe it in
While you still draw breath
At least for now
Forget your fear of death

I dislike funerals. If I had to guess why, I'd say it's the finality of it all. Once someone has died there's nothing else they will do on this earth. No unexpected redemption arc where they go back to school, reunite with long lost relatives, quit drugs or whatever they meant to do all along and never got around to. And some deaths are truly senseless and unexpected. Despite that, we each have to figure out how best we can live lives that aren't full of regrets when we die.
