Obsession, Procrastination, and the Mandalorian

Procrastination

I’ve been editing the second book in my upcoming duology for the past few weeks, and just realized the ending hasn’t been touched since I wrote a first draft of it four years ago. Eeek!

Somehow, I’ve revised the rest of the book a couple of times, and I’m super happy with how it's shaping up, but the ending is terrible. A legit disaster.

I need to delete a few chapters and write them from scratch.

It’s been a long day, and I don’t have the motivation for that right now, so I’m procrastinating.

I figured writing a blog post is at least productive procrastination.

What shall we talk about? Hmmm…

How about obsession?

When is obsession a good thing? (Yes, this is about the Mandalorian.)

Clearly, being obsessed about something can go a few different ways. It can be all consuming if you let it. Some obsessions are less than optimal. Unhealthy, even.

However…

When an obsession is a strong interest or an insatiable curiosity about a topic that isn’t doing anyone harm, maybe it’s not so bad.

Good, even.

This is me justifying the fact that I just watched Chapter 15 of the Mandalorian for the… third or fourth time. I’ve lost track.

And officially jumped into geek territory, but I’m okay with that.

  • I studied film in school. I’m fascinated by the process of taking a story and turning it into visuals, especially with this much action!
  • I’m a storyteller. IMHO, the Mandalorian is some of the best storytelling to come out of the Star Wars franchise.
  • I’ve loved Star Wars since I was two, but I’m not a fan of the prequel movies (Episodes I, II, & III). The Mandalorian and Rogue One renewed the fire of my fandom.
  • It makes me happy.

See? Reasons.

It doesn’t hurt that Din is 100% my type with the volume cranked to 11.

But let’s talk about Bill Burr, who did an incredible job playing Migs Mayfeld in two episodes of the Mandalorian.

I liked his performance in Chapter 6: The Prisoner, which was the first time his character showed up. That was one of my favorite episodes in the first season.

In Chapter 15: The Believer, the screen chemistry between Bill Burr and Pedro Pascal, who plays Din Djarin (the Mandalorian), was the stuff of legend. Before, I had a lukewarm liking for Mayfeld, but now he's on my list of awesomeness.

The banter, camaraderie, and tension between Mayfeld and Din in Chapter 15 is freaking phenomenal.

I especially liked this episode for the sense of victory it left me with, which I needed badly after Chapter 14 ripped out my heart and blew it up with a photon cannon.

Let’s hear it for kickass female leads!

Spoiler alert: The video below contains 30 seconds of footage from The Mandalorian, Chapter 15, where characters Fennec and Cara Dune kick some serious Empire ass.

I might do another post on the badass female characters in the Mandalorian, but right now, how about a shout out for Cara Dune and Fennec Shand!

I loved this scene!

When I grew up, Princess Leia was pretty much it for female Star Wars characters. The more recent movies, and especially the Mandalorian, have been bringing the girl power in bigtime.

And I am here for it!

Thanks for reading!

I have now completed all episodes of The Mandalorian and have loved each and every one. The surprise twist at the end of 16 was pretty awesome too! In a way it's a shame there are only 8 episodes each season, but the benefits of needing to keep the story moving through each episode, and the sheer quality of each episode, outweighs the scarcity of them.

Agreed. They're so good! And I'm glad we get seasons instead of a single feature film or two. Keep 'em coming, Disney! Thanks for the comment and joining me in my fandom. ;)

You really know how to set the hook, don't you? You had me at Mandalorian.

I tried to watch it last year, and couldn't get going on it. Granted it was a half assed attempt, but until the buzz (from you among others) of this year I let it be. Silly me. It's had the hook in me from episode 1 this time around (I'm watching in prime time for me, not at the don't fall asleep before bedtime slot) and I'm really liking it. To the point I've not watched your video clip because chapter 14 is today!

I agree with your assessment of Cara Dune. I think it was in 13 when I realized she was from Alderon and remember it being the first world killed by the first death star in the real first movie (IV).

Is Fennic Shand the woman in the GIF? If so, she left a mark, too.

I saw Titus Welliver (real name) in that episode. He's the commander of the freighter that tries to crash it rather than have it fall into Republic/Fennic Shand's hands. He's played a couple of really favorite parts in other shows for me. Adams in Deadwood and Harry Bosch in the series by the same name on Amazon.

I could go on, but I'm really interested in your ending difficulties. Are you certain they are endings that are the problem and not new beginnings? That you only think you are writing a duology and not a trilogy?

Commenting can also be a form of procrastination. Just sayin'

HA! Commenting is an excellent form of procrastination, and you're a pro at it. ;)

I've actually written the ending of the duology now, so not too much procrastination. It is not a trilogy... or it won't be for a while. I have another duology set in the same world to tackle before writing anything more in this part of the series.

As for the Mandalorian, you'll meet Fennec again in episode 14. The female Mandalorian in the gif is named Bo-Katan. Brace yourself for Chapter 14—that one hurt the first time I watched it. Mind you, it's a masterpiece. Pure genius storytelling. But it still hurt. Chapter 15 will pick you up after that, and then Chapter 16 is mind-blowing amazeballs. (This is me describing them without spoilers.)

It's funny, I didn't get into the Mandalorian last year either. Then I binged season one this year and haven't actually stopped watching them. I keep rewatching my favorite episodes, seeing if I can find details I missed before. You know you're a fan when. ;)

Thanks for the fabulous comment! Happy holidays to you and yours.
