“Aye, when they’re in position, hoist anchur an' pit uir forward jib sails tae th' win'! We’re enterin' th' river!”

Gratefuleveryday’s expression changed quickly as he processed the order- the Silverton was moving inland!

“Aye Sairrr! Three men, right away!” 🤼‍♂️

[Deeper in the forest, Seneca village...]

Commander Galligan pushed aside a thick branch and gazed across a wide clearing in the forest. There sat the main Senaca village, twelve or more longhouses and many T-pees, venison poles lined with the carcasses of white-tailed deer and many warriors and women and children strolling about. Then, glancing off to the right he saw pine posts buried securely in the earth and tied to each one of them, a sorry figure of a prisoner.

“I need a closer look…” Galligan whispered to Commander Kerrislravenhill, “Stay here with the men for now, the sun is still bright in the west. Wait for my signal.”

“Aye Sairrr.”

Leaving the group, Galligan half-walked, half-crawled closer to the far right of the clearing. Stopping some fifty feet from the captured men he looked carefully…

“Bludy hell…” He whispered to himself, “Ripper an' Fard…an'... a focking stranger! Where is Lupega?!”

He studied the third man carefully. His clothing was worn and tattered. His eyes stared off with a dull, empty gaze that focused on nothing, his chest and shoulders bore the scars of wounds and burns.

‘Who th' hell is that?!’ ° ° ° ° Galligan thought to himself in confusion.

[In the fast current of the river...]

Standing Officer-Carpenter Lupega tried hard to dog-paddle with his bound arms to keep his head above water. But after a good twenty minutes of struggle, he felt his strength beginning to wane. With each stroke of his arms, his ability to control his swift passage in the river’s current grew weaker. Suddenly, he felt the rough scrape of sand against his knees! He dragged one foot to slow his approach, then the other. Finally he clawed the sand with his bound hands and tried hard to get out of the flow of the main river current!

“I’ve…I’ve got to make shore!” He muttered to himself in a semi-conscious state, 'Got to…make shore….' ° ° ° °

In one last effort he dug his hands into the sand bar and pulled his numb legs toward shore and out of the swift current. Finally feeling dry land, he dragged himself forward and collapsed on the bank of the river! All went black in his mind.
