The eight branches of Yoga according to Patanjali
The oldest texts that refer to the noble art of yoga are the Vedas.
The ultimate purpose of yoga is the meeting of the individual soul
(jivatma) with the eternal and universal principle that has created it
(paramatma), hence the meaning of union.
The merit of having gathered and codified the immense ancient knowledge about yoga, traditionally transmitted orally, corresponds to the wise patanjali, who seems to have lived around 300 BC in his yoga sutra, patanjali clearly and concisely exposes the whole philosophy of yoga and practices to reach the end. According to Patanjali eight are the branches of yoga here the definition of ashtanga yoga (ashta = 8, anga = parts).
The Ashtanga Yoga of patanjali was also called raja yoga. The word "raja" is not used by patanjali but by later commentators with the meaning of supreme yoga.
And here's why I chose the name of my school Octuple Yoga.
