Journey to the Moon (Le Voyage dans la Lune) is a French film that premiered in 1902 assuming a revolution for the time. Its author, Georges Méliès, was the first great creator of the cinematograph, the pioneer in giving the first films a true argument. Artist, magician, illusionist, mountebank, the multifaceted Méliès, saw in the new invention of the cinematograph a way to increase the promotion of their numbers. Although his aesthetic was dominated by the technique of theater, he conceived numerous tricks and effects that I include in his more than 800 films.
The influence that Méliès has had on cinematographic technique is incalculable, and today we can refer to him as the first to devise cinema as a spectacle. Journey to the Moon (1902) is considered the first science fiction film, and in it the characteristic elements of the genre are evident (the spaceship, the exploration of new horizons ...). Some of the best known cinematographic techniques are already present in this film, such as fades, overprinting, the use of models, etc.
SYNOPSIS: The story begins with a meeting of scientists in which Dr. Barbenfouillis (played by Georges Mélliès himself) tries to convince his colleagues to participate in a trip to explore the Moon. After specifying the plan and forming the group that will carry out the expedition, the details of the trip are finalized and the scientists are shot in a space rocket. The ship lands in the eye of the Moon (already famous image) and scientists begin to explore the lunar environment. They do not take long to find the inhabitants of the Moon, the Selenites, who capture them and bring them before their king.
After discovering the way in which the Selenites can be overcome with the use of an umbrella, the scientists manage to escape and return to Earth. There, after falling into the sea and being rescued, they are received in Paris as heroes.
