Hey nice work! How long have you been working with blender? I haven't tried hair yet, that looks tough...

Thanks ^_^

I feel like I've been working with Blender for ages and still not good at it! XD

Had a quick look at my blog, apparently been playing with Blender since june 2012 which is not as long as some but still ages XD

Hair is actually pretty easy to set up, hard parts are making sure your hardware can cope with it (I have a decent rig and can still make it cry sometimes, and I don't know if it's the amount of hair on this character or something in some update but I can't gpu render this scene) and the usual making it look good. For this character my basic settings are pretty much just

and using curve guides to style (I'm using path curves because I personally find them easier to manage, not sure if there is any advantage or disadvantage to using them over bezier or the other nurbs type).

and using simple children rather than interpolated (which is what fixed my problem in the end, I've always used interpolated because in previous versions that's what worked better ^_^;).

Shout out if you need help, I'm happy to attempt to help XD (can't promise I will actually be helpful though ;D)

wow, that does sound rather complicated. I just finished my self study and was going to try adding hair but my cheesy laptop is already lagging pretty hard. I might have to wait for an upgrade before getting into that =)

If you have a cartoony style character you can get away with doing polygon hair either has hair cards or larger objects and use either cloth physics or soft body on them which should be less intense than particles but might still be a bit much for your laptop ^_^; (and also I can't help with those as I've never managed to get good results which is one of the reasons why I ended up doing particle hair XD)

I have a laptop I acquired recently to be able to keep working while travelling and it's so violently lower spec'd than my current rig I'm scared about how things are going to go on it, so can totally sympathise with the waiting for an upgrade XD

yeah it's interesting seeing what pushes the limits. I think when I do actual characters I'll use the block style hair, I don't intend to ever actually animate any characters on here so hopefully I can manage. I'm pretty sure it would explode if I tried that.

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.
