Steem Basic Income - A Quick Overview
I don't know what the final answers will be for basic income to happen at a societal or universal level, but is there any reason something like Steem couldn't be part of the answer?
The purpose of this project is to provide Steemians with a basic income.
How can we do that?
To be honest, we probably can't. We don't have enough resources. What may seem small to some, a few cents or a few dollars a day, may be meaningful to others. For this to work, we need people to buy into the system, or sponsor others into the system.
Status Update
We are up to 514 shares, with 238 members. We have simplified the share list into a little different format. The members with multiple shares will continue to be presented in table format, followed by a simplified list of everyone that has only one share. Let us know what you think of this new format, and if you believe your share count to be incorrect, please let us know and we will check it again.
We have a pending order with @minnowbooster for delegation, but the market is full of orders and ours is unlikely to get filled. We will resubmit with more generous pricing if it does not fill.

Enrollment
Sounds intriguing... How do I sign up?
Send 1 STEEM to @steembasicincome. Include the name of who you want to sponsor in the comments. You and the person you sponsor will each receive shares in the program. You can also send 1 SBD and the extra value will be treated as a donation to the program and used for promotion or powering up.
Okay, so I signed up. Now what?
You and the person you sponsored will be added to the pool. Each member of the program will receive their Steem Basic Income through post upvotes. The total vote strength available will be divided by the number of shares to determine the vote weight each share receives.
Each member's total vote weight is apportioned based on their weekly post patterns. A member with 3 posts per week would receive twice the upvote value per post that a member with 6 posts per week would receive.
Growing your Steem Basic Income
These seem like small upvotes. Can I increase it?
There are several ways to increase your Steem Basic Income.
- Upvote comments and posts from @steembasicincome to power up the votes.
- Sponsor more members into the pool. Every time you sponsor a member, you will each receive 1 share. By sponsoring more members you can receive more shares.
- Delegate SP to @steembasicincome. This increases the income for everyone. Thank you!
- Buy Steem. As Steem goes up, the value of your basic income increases.
Troubleshooting
I didn't get my income today. What happened?
You have to post to receive your income. We are also developing functionality to reward comments, but this might not be working yet. Some content may be blocked from receiving support. Please make sure that your post or comment is somewhere work appropriate. There could also be some issue with the bot. Please message @steembasicincome or @josephsavage for assistance.
Help! My reputation is under attack! Will that affect my income? @steembasicincome periodically reviews reputation of existing members. If your reputation drop below 20, you could be greylisted and not receive your basic income again for a while.
What if I don't usually post every day?
We would prefer to reward your best quality content. Since there needs to be something for us to upvote, you need to at least post sometimes. There will be a periodic review of post frequency and member weights may be adjusted to align with your posting frequency. Members that attempt to abuse this may be removed from the system.
Help! I was removed by @josephsavage and he refused to reinstate me!
In the event that a user disagrees with an administrative decision to impose a temporary or permanent removal, there will be an appeal process. The offending user can choose 1 members from the recipient list (published periodically) and @josephsavage will choose 1 member. Those members will review the elements of the case and decide whether the removal should be reversed. (Appointed members may decline appointment). If they are unable to reach a consensus decision, they may each appoint 2 more members (total of 6), and the case can be decided by majority. If they are still unable to agree, the original ruling from @josephsavage is upheld by default.
This process may be revised, but any revision must be approved by a majority of voting members. A voting post would be published with the new proposed rules and a yes or no comment. The comment with the most member votes (not highest reward) will determine the outcome.
Changes to how the program works need to be approved through the voting post process. Dissenting members that have sponsored others into the program will be fully or partially refunded if the total Basic Income they have received does not exceed 200% of their initial registration cost (1 Steem per share acquired through sponsoring another member). Sponsored shares (registration fee was paid by somebody else) are not eligible for refund for any reason.
Questions?
We broke down the mathematical mechanics for how the program works in the extended introduction. If you have any other questions, ask away in the comments section!
I've just enrolled, and found somebody to nominate through this blog post i made. looking foward to seeing how it works. Who knows I may enroll again :)
Thanks for the support, and for bringing that blog post to our attention. We just resteemed it. The next enrollment batch should be processed later today, but it's a sick day, so who knows!
So... magically I'm on this list. 😍
I just went through 2 months of your wallet attempting to find out who sponsored me. I went through it twice. I couldn't find me... I feel my name is on there by some weird accident.
I really just wanted to say, "Thank you" to whoever thought of me.
Also, quick question: If Persons A, B & C sponsor Person D, does Person D get 3 shares? I ask, because after going through the list, I saw a few folks that were sponsored more than once, but only have one share.
Just learning how it all works.
Sorry, if I slipped in on accident. 😏
Looks like we missed your welcome message. You were sponsored by @sneakyninja.
It is as you say, Person D should get 3 shares. Do you remember who you saw that was sponsored more than once? We will double-check their share counts.
Thanks for finding out! I'll thank that @sneakyninja ! 🐱👤
And at least topkpop was sponsored by mariannewest and sneakyninja... that I remember.
Thank you, @carrieallen! We double-checked against the master list for tonight's update, and @topkpop had 2 shares in the master but only 1 in the last update. That has been updated.
Everyone else looks like it matches the master list, so if you see any more, please let us know so we can make sure they are getting the appropriate votes.
I was thinking about universal basic income this morning. I am a new user and sometimes I write a post and the post earns 0 and then I will see a comment like "great post!" and that comment would earn a couple of dollars and I would think to myself that the one comment earned more than what I earn from 150 posts. I was thinking a UBI would keep new members from getting discouraged. As soon as I earn one Steem count me in. If somebody else can sponsor me I'll sponsor them back as soon as I get one Steem.
I have one more suggestion and that suggestion is to add @originalworks to all of the posts that the bot makes. This will give a second free upvote. I was thinking we can force the @orginalworks bot to autotrail the @steembasicincome bot. If the @steembasicincome bot doesn't comment when it votes I think that we should add it as a function because it will give the project more visibility when it votes and it will give the author of the post a chance to give a vote back to the bot in the comment section. If any of the club members have their own bots they can also have their bots auto-trail the @steembasicincome bot.
Thank you for your interest. These are great suggestions! Of course we would love for club members to auto-trail the account (at least to upvote @steembasicincome for everyone's benefit, even if they don't follow the vote trail). We do not have that as a requirement.
At the time that we launched, there were some different voting clubs that were downvoted whenever their bots posted comments. We chose not to comment when we upvote to eliminate that attack vector. Since we haven't seen that as an issue on Steem in a while, putting a comment bot in place to trail the votes is a good idea that we can look into.
We do reuse some material from previous posts in each new update, instead of writing each update from scratch. We have not specifically tried to get @originalworks to trail, since we don't know what the threshold is that would convince it that we are plagiarizing ourselves.
Thanks for letting me know this. I didn't even consider that people would downvote the bot and that every comment the bot left would leave the project vulnerable to attack.
I think you are right that people are becoming more comfortable with bots being on Steem. I should also build my own auto-trail bot. I just need to find a good tutorial on how to build one. I'm going to resteem this to try increase visibility for the project.
I know there is streemian for trailing other curators, and Steemvoter for 'subscribing' to upvote particular users. We played around with some other voting bots, but we could not configure everything the way we wanted, so now we use Steemvoter.
The @OriginalWorks bot has determined this post by @steembasicincome to be original material and upvoted it!
To call @OriginalWorks, simply reply to any post with @originalworks or !originalworks in your message!
Seems like an interesting project - no idea if it can work, will be interesting to see how it plays out...
I just filled your minnowbooster delegation, which will hopefully help a little bit
Cheers
Oh wow, thank you! We saw that it filled today. That will make a big difference for our members!
