I came across a comment earlier that broadened my perspective on the negative effects of downvoting currently happening on Hive.
For those who are new to the platform, the "downvote" feature is intended to adjust the rewards a post may receive by the end of the 7-day payout period. Essentially, a post’s reward isn’t final until it actually pays out. Within that 7-day window, the reward can still be adjusted... either through unvoting or reducing the upvote amount by the curator, or by someone downvoting the post to lower its potential payout.
For those who believe this is how the system is meant to work, they view it simply as a way to adjust the post’s reward.
However, the content creator or author may see it differently. From their perspective, downvotes often feel personal or discouraging. Most content creators view downvoting as a negative aspect of Hive.
If you're wondering why content creators might view downvotes negatively, it's because of how they're presented on the frontend. Downvotes are often perceived as a negative judgment on a post; a post that someone has poured their time, effort, and passion into. The symbols used reinforce this impression: a red color, a minus sign, a broken heart icon, and a visible reduction in rewards.
No wonder people take it personally and feel aggravated by it.
This is largely due to poor design, with very little consideration given to user experience or the emotional impact on authors. Even veteran authors on the platform complain, vent, and feel frustrated about receiving downvotes, despite downvoting others themselves. This creates a toxic cycle of retaliation: downvote wars, where hate breeds more hate, leading to an unproductive use of the blockchain's resources.
It becomes a never-ending cycle of exchanging downvotes and resentment, making us no different from users on mainstream social media platforms.
I used to believe that this platform was different from mainstream social media. But over time, I’ve realized that we, as humans, have brought the same behaviors with us. Whether centralized or decentralized, the platform may change, but our attitudes toward each other often remain the same. We've simply rebranded it without truly shifting how we engage.
If you read through the comment, the content creator didn’t even mention anything about the rewards being removed from their post. Instead, they used words like hostile, nullifying, demotivating, dislikes, and hate.
They even proposed a way to block downvoters from viewing their posts or accounts. They simply want to prevent interaction with downvoters, which makes sense because they don’t feel safe being downvoted. It feels personal to them.
Quoting the last part of their comment:
"If they hate me, literally do not want to see me and do not want me to exist, then let me disappear for them, and I will create for those who wish me well."
This statement is incredibly impactful and meaningful, especially considering they didn’t even mention anything about rewards or the financial impact of downvotes. They just want to create for people who genuinely appreciate their content. But now, because of the actions of downvoters, they feel so demotivated that they no longer feel safe posting on the platform.
Ultimately, they are simply asking for a safe space where they can interact with those who value their work.
At the end of the day, creators simply want to feel safe, respected, and valued for their work. When downvotes are perceived as hostile rather than constructive, it discourages genuine expression and weakens the community. If we want Hive to thrive, we must foster an environment where creators feel empowered to share — not silenced by fear.

@ecoinstant already provided it's solution.
thanks for the info...i hope that more users affected by downvotes will learn about it before it's too late.
What is the Solution ? Mute all the Evil Downvoters ? I have been Downvoted for almost 3 years now.... $10,000 taken away on Day 7. So I moved to Blurt.blog where there are no downvotes ever. It's the only Solution I could Find.

I am ok if people downvote contents due to the dispute or disagreement of the rewards. However what I am not ok is with what narrations come with it.
Let's pick two worst narrations/arguments I have read
There are others, but I do not wish to talk too much here. I do not take side on neither, but please... do not use stupid narrations like that, people who don't understand anything will get a picture that this place is a land of retarts
I completely agree with you. Downvotes for reward disagreement are one thing, but the harsh and demeaning narratives that sometimes come with them are what truly damage the community vibe. Thank you for sharing your thoughtful perspective.
The irony with the first argument is that it often comes from accounts that sell thousands of Hive in a single transaction (more than most do over several years), while also being massively over rewarded themselves despite posting nothing interesting. All attention to them purely a result of their stake and voters trying to get on their good side by supporting them. They'll never consider their own posts to be over-rewarded though ;^)

A simple way to make it less demoralising is simply to hide all the "monetary" details from the frontend until the end of the 7 days pay out. At that point, ONLY the final value is shown.
You still see the "likes" & "dislikes" but you are blissfully unaware of their effects. Then if you actually made anything after the tallying of accounts on the final day, it's a nice surprise?
This should make it less jarring for most people who get too emotionally invested in what they perceive (rightly or not) as being robbed of their rewards.
That’s actually a good suggestion! Hiding monetary values until payout could reduce emotional stress. Appreciate your insight!
I remember when I received my first downvote before. I received bigger reward then. When a saw the big reward, I was really happy. But that happiness didn't last long coz it got downvoted after that. I feel so devastated that time. It puzzled me why I received such. In the end I just ignore it and move on. I was a bit demotivated after receiving it but later on, that pushes me to create more content, just more personal experiences. Seriously, DV has a negative impact to some, especially if it is too sudden and without even knowing the reason why. I mean, who wants a broken heart icon in our post no? I feel like when I see that in my post, it indicates something bad. Although we know that our content is genuine and original. But when some people see it, they might think badly about it. 🫠🫠
I relate to that completely. It’s tough when it feels personal. Glad you kept going.

It has been the most talked about thing on hive. No matter how things are, everyone will have their various view on things. Nothing is ever fair, a drawing can be a piece of art to some and doodle to others. I would say key is still engage and build up the community together.
Absolutely. Perspectives vary, but staying engaged and building together is what keeps Hive strong. Thanks for the reminder!
The person you are quoting was downvoted due to geo political issues (Russia vs Ukraine), this is so nuanced and out of the norm, I'd be surprised it happens again in the next 5 years. I believe they agreed to stop downvoting as well and even remove the downvotes.
Downvoting in general is extremely rare, in most cases it's justified. There are some edge cases where it isn't and that sucks.
People cry for decentralization, but when they get it, they are unhappy. Voting on Hive is decentralized, everyone gets their chance to use their influence to determine what should be rewarded and what shouldn't.
99.14% of all votes on Hive have been upvotes. Out of those downvotes, I'd guess over 50% of them are insignificant and have very little to no impact on payout making it more like 99.5%+ of votes are upvotes.
Thanks so much for this post. It's shows that people with good conscience still exists. It's really disheartening that one will keep receiving downvote with no reason. Cried and no one to safe you. Sometimes I am confused if Hive is really decentralized? Thought downvote was made to correct mistakes. Not to punish someone out of personal hatred.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Downvotes should be constructive. And I agree... conscience and empathy are vital.
May Jah bless your good heart

The issue of downvotes is a serious concern that should be addressed generally for the growth of this platform. I know some persons who have gone all out to promote #hive in my country that have become targets of downvotes.
It's not fair to judge someone without having an ideal interaction with such a person or conclude that a particular kind of people doesn't deserve huge rewards.
It's unhealthy, demotivating, and loveless behavior. Let's make this small world a better and safer place for all.
Yes, judging without context hurts the community spirit. Your call for fairness and empathy is exactly what Hive needs more of.

We made a solution to show your content on your own domain, we call it "Your Front End" and here is an example that I use for my business, which cannot be professional and show "disagreements about rewards" at the same time.

Anyone can configure their own by logging into thecrazygm.com and checking premium tools. Also its open source if you want to host it yourself.
That’s an impressive solution... thank you for sharing it. I appreciate the effort you’ve put into creating a more controlled and professional space for creators.
How do we go about it 🤔

Thanks, when I make post through this end, will it reflect on Hive blog
Its not for making posts, its for showing them.
Ok
Myself, @ijelady, @chichieze, @chydolar @calebmarvel24 has been a victim of back to back downvotes from just one person for months now, so I understand how the writer feels, unfortunately it seems that there is little or nothing that can be done about it, so if one gets tired of the downvotes the person can simply live the platform.
I'm really sorry to hear that you've all been through that. It's disheartening when downvotes become targeted and personal rather than constructive. I understand why some creators feel pushed to the edge, and I hope the community can work together toward better tools and culture that protect and support everyone.
I'm worried that your comment will be downvoted so I sent you a tip instead.
Thank you, I really appreciate 🙏🏻.

This is such an important and well-articulated post. 💔 The emotional toll of downvotes is often overlooked, yet your words bring much-needed attention to the human side of content creation. It’s not just about numbers or algorithms it’s about real people, emotions, and effort. Thank you for speaking up and reminding us that kindness and empathy matter in every corner of the Hive ecosystem. Your voice is powerful, and your message resonates deeply. 🙏🧠💬
