In a few days, the United States will be celebrating our Independence Day on July 4th. Around the country, people will be hosting parties to celebrate this occasion and will likely be having barbecues.
I wanted to share one of our favorite summer side-dish that is relatively easy and quick to make, baked beans.
Baked beans were introduced into the United States 1901 by the Heinz company. "Heinz Baked Beans" made their debut at the Fortnum and Mason department store in London.
This is THE BEST Baked Bean dish we have tasted. I found it online a few years ago and thought to share this dish that is now a staple of our summer weekends.
This recipe will yield 8 servings.
What you'll need:
• 6 slices of bacon
• 1 Onion, chopped finely
• 1 Green pepper finely chopped
• 1/4 tsp salt ( or to taste)
• 3 cans 15 ounces cans of navy beans
• 1 1/4 cup of ketchup
• 1/4 cup of molasses
• 1/2 tsp ground black pepper ( or to taste)
How to Prepare:
Begin cooking your bacon in a skillet over medium heat until it is crispy. Transfer to a plate and pat with a paper towel or napkin to soak up excess grease, and let cool to the touch. After your bacon has cooled, be sure to crumble and place on the side.
Finely chop your onion and green pepper, and then in the same skillet that you cooked your bacon, sauté in 2 to 3 tablespoons of bacon grease for about 8-10 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 325 degrees F.
Drain your navy beans and combine them along with ketchup, molasses and black pepper in a mixing bowl, and mix thoroughly.
Place the mixture in an oven safe casserole dish and cover for 1 hour.
Remove and serve with hamburgers, hotdogs etc.
Wow! This look really delicious and nutritious.
It is, and this dish goes with almost everything. Enjoy! If you try the recipe, let me know how you liked it.
