We looked at the boating tour in Ritsurin Garden last time, mostly around the Southern Lake/Pond. Today let's continue our exploration of the large garden. Btw, Japan will reopen its borders to independent foreign travelers from the 11th of this month. I highly recommend this beautiful garden to you, and I would love to visit it again in another season in the future.

The name "Ritsurin" literally means "chestnut grove," which is said to come from its earliest site. The garden, however, is best known for its over 1000 pine trees. For over 300 years, these pines have been carefully and expertly cared for. Many of them are beautifully trimmed bonsai, and I can imagine the constant hard work that has been put into them.

The tree in my photos below, the Neagari Goyo-matsu, is a type of Japanese white pine. In 1833, the 11th Tokugawa Shogun presented this miniature bonsai to the Takamatsu Domain. It has now grown into a massive tree, as you can see.

There are several teahouses in the garden, the largest of which is Kikugetsu-tei Teahouse. The name "Kikugetsu" comes from a Tang Dynasty Chinese poem that means "it looks like I'm holding the moon in my hands when I scoop up the water". So poetic, isn't it?;)

The teahouse was popular among Takamatsu feudal lords in the past, and it is now open to the public. You can go in to enjoy two types of traditional Japanese tea: matcha (powdered green tea) and sencha (infused green tea), and the lake view from the teahouse is superb.

Hirai-ho is a landscaped hill designed to look like Mt. Fuji but is much smaller in size. My previous post's head photo was taken from the top of this hill. From here, you can admire the picturesque Engetsukyo Bridge, Nanko Pond, and Kikugetsu-tei Teahouse, with beautiful Mt. Shuin (Purple Cloud Mountain) in the background.

The Commerce & Industry Promotion Hall consists of four buildings linked by corridors. Aside from historical information, there is a display of traditional crafts, such as furniture designed by George Nakashima. I adore his incredible woodworks and have long wished to visit his home studio in New Hope, Pennsylvania.

In the Sanuki Folk Craft Museum located next to the Commerce & Industry Promotion Hall, a wide variety of folk crafts can be seen and purchased, like Kagawa lacquer ware, Kagawa rihei-yaki ceramics, Takamatsu Hariko dolls, wood and paper crafts.

Finally, here are some quintessential kawaii stamp collections found at tourist attractions throughout Japan. In this garden, I also got some stamps. :)

Japanese architecture never ceases to fascinate us! This type of design character inspires me so much because of its minimalistic vibe, simple aesthetic, practical functionality, plus the healing ambiance of nature. Never been to Japan but longing to travel there soon. 😊

What do you love about Japanese architecture @itchyfeetdonica?

Japanese architecture is such a broad concept. There are various styles over a long history, but yeah, I agree with what you said there. :)
I'm a big fan of the traditional wooden structures like the sukiya style teahouse in this post. It gives me inner peace.
I like how their architecture has evolved with influences from others such as China and the West, and has integrated well with the nature and local culture.

That's absolutely true. Japanese architecture is an interesting fusion of various design influences from the East and West. And I simply love the final results especially when merged with the natural environment. Wood is one of my favorite building materials as well because it's organic and produces the desired sense of warmth in built spaces. Indeed, if tranquility is what you're after, then their architectural character surely meets the criteria. 😊

Looks like a scene from a movie. Great photos tho.

Such a beautiful place 😍
