Slayed the Garage Door

About a week ago I posted about the Blurry Weekend and mentioned the issue with the armature thingy that opens my garage door breaking off the door. You can see me holding it in the picture above. Well, I have been feeling pretty good physically and mentally lately, so thought i would give another shot at fixing that sucker before the handyman showed up and took my money.

So Gav-man and I took a trip to the local Tractor Supply store and picked up a piece of thin steel strip with pre-drilled holes. I then attached it with bolts where the old brackets used to be on the door. You can see the steel strip I bought in the picture above.

I had originally tried to weld it on like it should be, but the door metal is thin and I am a very terrible welder. It didn't worl out, so I went with the drilling and bolts instead like the previous owners had done, just better.

Once the metal strip was attached to the door, I was able to reattach the armature to the metal strip with bolts through the pre-drilled holes. This took some work because there was not a lot of room behind the metal strip to work with to holdm onto the nut when tightening the bolt. By the time we were done, I was sweating my butt off, and needed to cool down with an adult beverage.

It is piss beer, but it tasted good after burning up inside my garage. I would have preferred one of those tasty beers that @zekepickleman posts about all the time, but I am set in my ways when it comes to spending money on beer, plus we don't have that type of variety around here.

Anyway, it tasted good, cooled me off, and it felt good to save the money on not having to use a handyman to get something done finally. I wanted to wait to share why I haven't been posting or as active online as much lately, but it is because I am feeling better and doing more stuff offline finally. Hey don;t worry though, this should lead to more things to post about and share with all of you.

Hope you all have a great week,
Joe

I don't tackle tasks like this usually, however I do a few things here and there and know how nice it feels to do jobs for myself; it's satisfying and saving a few dollars is nice too. It's nice that you've been feeling like doing more things, I can only feel that's of great value to you over all and I imagine you'll be feeling better because of it.

Well done Joe, you earned that drink.

Becca 🌷

Oh yes, I saved about 300-400 dollars I imagine. Yes, it was a big boost to morale to be able to tolerate working on something like that over a period of time without falling out. Thanks Becca ❤️

That's a great saving and better in your pocket than someone else's...and the added bonus of feeling good. A double win!

Becca 🌷

Yes, the savings was good, but feeling good enough to do it myself was the best part, plus doing it with my son was the icing on the cake. So I got a triple win!

Hope you are having a great week so far ❤️

You're a credit to yourself Joe, I mean that honestly; I understand what it's like for veterans sometimes, maybe someday I'll open up about what I mean, but not yet.

Have a nice Wednesday. Have coffee, although you're probably on your third already. 🙃

Becca 🌷

Awe, thank you. You share when you feel comfortable and I will be hear to listen. You have a nice one too. You must be a mind reader because I just heated up my third cup of leftover cup.

It's my superpower...knowing when people are drinking coffee. 🙃

You are probably better off with the bolt up anyway. Some pieces look like trying to weld a beer can plus one piece looks like it's galvanized and that's really crappy to weld and toxic without respiratory protection. Nice fix tho! If it comes apart, tack the nut to the bolt.

Might not be a microbrew but beer is still beer! Enjoy your cold ones! 😁

Yeah, my welding skills are horrible. I was never trained, so kind of taught myself. I think if it comes apart it will be because it rips through the thin metal door. I may try to put some type of reinforcing brace on the back side of the door. Eventually I we will just purchase a new door, but that is a year or two away.

Next beer I have will be raised for you and your welding advice 😀

Welding isn't easy by any means. Let alone anything under 1/8" thick. I have a degree in it and anything thin sucks. I bet you can't wait for your new door!

Glad you're feeling better, and isn't it great to be handy and put your skills to work saving you money in the process?

As for your beverage, I can still remember the shock I felt seeing people drinking in the open whle walking down the street, when I lived in Germany. That's an amazing country and we had many good times there. :)

Yeah, I can be somewhat handy when I am able to be. Luckily my health has been holding up and been feeling better lately. Woohoo!

I have never been to Germany. I might have flown through there for a stop once, but not sure. I have heard it is a fantastic place to be stationed if you are in the military or to live for a while. Especially during the Oktoberfest.

DIY saves a lot of money nowadays. Handymen do not come cheap.

Next week I am up to Spain again where some nice jobs await me. I just hate it having to buy tools for a one-time job. Like a battery driven impact driver to re do Indoline roofing.

Until my health went downhill, I always did most of the handyman work around the house. I am not an expert in a lot of stuff, but know enough to fix most basic problems that arise with the house. I am with you about having to buy tools for a one-time job. I used to hate that so badly when I knew how to fix something but didn't have the tool or tool set to complete it. If I could, I would usually borrow them.

Hope you are having a great week and best luck working on the roofing.

Good work, Joe! Saved some money and got the satisfaction of doing it yourself.

With prices the way they are going, I don't blame you for drinking the cheap stuff. I do the same here, with the cheap ¥100 happoshus that are pretty much the same as that Coors. Not the best, but cheap and good enough.

Thanks. It was a great satisfaction, especially being able to spend time and doing it with my son. Yes, saving money on the handyman was a real big pplus as well.

Yeah, with the economy the way it is, I shy away from my usual darker beers because they are more expensive. I used to like to drink Orion when I was in Okinawa. I can't remember how much it was though.

I'm glad to see you're feeling better and were able to do some work around the house as well. It gives you quite a lot of satisfaction and the power to go on. Don't forget to have some fun:)

Thank you! It was a good feeling to actually get this done without depending on someone else to do the work. Yes, it was fun and I enjoyed doing it with my son as well.

Hope you are having a great week so far.❤️

I like Coors Light. Nothing wrong with that. There are a lot worse ones out there to be honest. Looks like you cut your hand up a little there. It isn't a proper job unless you bleed a little. At least that's how it usually works for me!

Coors Light ain't bad I guess. I just like the darker beers like Guinness. Those are more expensive these days those and frankly I don't drink all that much beer these days because of the meds I take. It is more of a reward for days like that.

Yeah, got a little nick on the hand from the sharp piece of steel. Didn't even notice it until after. Oddly enough it didn't bleed all that much, which is odd since I take blood thinners.

My father-in-law says you should always expect to have cuts, bruises, and a screw or bolt or two left over after a job. And you only have to worry if the blood is squirting and the bolt or screw is long. hahaha

Haha, that is a really good saying by your father in law. I would have to agree with that. I prefer darker beers myself. I have a case of Octoberfest I have been working through and I also have a 12 pack of Yunengling black and tan bottles that is one of my favorites.

Those actually sound pretty good. I just like sipping on a good cold dark beer when it is hot outside after doing some work. Now that we have been chatting about it, I might spring and have the wife pick some up next time she is out.

If you haven't had the Yuengling Black and Tan and you can get it in your state, I highly recommend it. We can't get Yunegling in Michigan, so I pick up a bunch any time I head down to Ohio.

I will have to keep my eye out for it next time out with the wife. Not sure if we have it here or not. Appreciate the recommendation and bet it tastes good.

It's delicious!
