Yep and Robbie is a very serious character Lady Joan.
I have been trying to get a smile out of him for more than two years.

My brother in law worked on the mines as an electrician on the control panels. So his lungs are gone and I forget the illness. He is the same age as me, but his health has seriously deteriorated.
So I think that in a way it is all expected.
Sad but true.

Transvaal mining lung ailments are plentiful, some you are able to collect compensation for to assist in treatment. My uncle succumbed to lung ailment from working mines years ago, no cover at the time was offered, he was employed underground for about forty years.

Have a great day!

No compensation for him as he didn't work underground. Imagine that?
One can certainly deduce that by being present in a mining ambient every day will result in some kind of lung damages.
Even people living in mining surrounds are having lung trouble and there is no compensation for them.

But such is life.

Land was raped and then they left with the riches! No cover in early years not having unions, sadly people forget the labourers of yesterday endured a hard life earning a living, some still do except more safety is in play now.

You would remember when the wind blew in a certain direction all that fine powder from mine dumps would end up in the home with everything under thin layer of silt... Many most probably suffer and are none the wiser.

They had to kill first before they could get at the riches Lady Joan and you are right, the workers were regarded as common fodder. Even with the safety now there are still many problems in the mining world. Just imagine working in the coal mines with all of the black dust and soot.

Yes indeed and Rita (My mom) used to complain about sweeping the verandah every day when those winds were around. As boys we used to play on those cyanide laden mine dumps and I collected many hidings. No protection for the people were offered and none ever will.
Such is life.

Hope that your weekend will not be like ours.

People do what is needed to put food on the table, we reminisce about mine dumps, I would like to know how much dirt we live with now, what we breathing in, noise pollution and contaminated water.

Will enjoy the weekend whatever the weather, each day some new surprises one way or another.

Oh yes and I hate noise. Thankfully pollution is not so bad, but the crop spraying is a problem.
Then we also have many fynbos allergies here.

Makes life worthwhile if exterior influences don't disturb the inward serenity.
Be it what it may one just continues on one's way.
