Happy World Bee Day 2022 - Did you do something to help the Bees today

in Silver Bloggers2 years ago

Hello Hello to all the bees in the Hive, both Silvers and young ones alike!

Yes today is World Bee Day 2022

Challenged accepted @guiltyparties here is my show of solidarity for #worldbeeday2022 🐝

Each Hive community member has been challenged to write a post about the problems that bees are facing and how we can help. We are to tag our posts with #WorldBeeDay2022 🐝

Well, I have just checked the tag and I have seen the grand total of 14 posts in support of the bees, perhaps the bees of Hive are too busy trying to become Lions in Leo🤣 well you will need that money when bees are extinct and food rockets in price!

Joking aside, what is World Bee Day 2022?

That was a link to a fantastic page on the UN website specifically for World Bee Day 2022. This day is to highlight to the general public the importance of bees to ecosystems and to our very future on this planet!

Who suggested World Bee Day?

The UN Member States approved Slovenia’s proposal to proclaim 20 May as World Bee Day in December 2017.

Why celebrate it on May 20th?

On May 20th 1734, Anton Janša who is regarded as the pioneer of beekeeping was born in 1734 in Breznica, Carniola (which is now in Slovenia), hence Slovenia's proposal!

Why Are Bees Important?

Bees are vital to pollinate the food that we need to eat and survive. In addition to this bees pollinate many of the trees and flowers which provide habitats for a lot of wildlife.
The decline of bees will drastically cute pollination and as a result what grows.
As an example without bees it has been estimated that it would cost farmers in the UK an incredible £1.8 billion per year to manually pollinate their crops (source)
That is a pretty mind blowing figure huh?

About 84% of crops for human consumption depend on pollinators.

Just let that sink in!

How Are Bees Being Threatened?

Native bees are being threatened by:

  • unprecedented habitat loss
  • pesticide threats
  • introduced diseases.

image.png

How can You Help? This is the advice given by the UN here

  • planting a diverse set of native plants, which flower at different times of the year;
  • buying raw honey from local farmers;
  • buying products from sustainable agricultural practices;
    avoiding pesticides, fungicides or herbicides in our gardens;
  • protecting wild bee colonies when possible;
  • sponsoring a hive;
  • making a bee water fountain by leaving a water bowl outside;
  • helping sustaining forest ecosystems;
  • raising awareness around us by sharing this information within our communities and networks!

image.png

How did I Help today?

  • We are lucky and have an outdoor Friday Market with local produce and I was able to buy a couple of jars of raw honey,
  • I now have a water bowl at the back of my flat in my little garden area,
  • I have been tweeting about World Bee Day 2022 and will be sharing this and the UN webpage link on my social sites.

Why not do your bit, and spread the awareness of the plight of the bee!

Thank you for reading and I will leave you with one last shot of a bee that happily posed working for me. Please note that ALL pictures are taken by me.

This is our planet and it is OUR responsibility to look after it for future generations!
Let's all do our bit to save the bees and save the planet!

Oh, I didn't know these, thank you Tito Ed for bringing it to our attention that our world need bees and they should be protected.

I also was not aware that it is World's Bee Day, my bad :) I wish you a great one!

Yes I saw it in on Discord and had forgotten about it CJ!
Yep we need to look after the bees and other pollinators, we are determined to kill this planet one way or another!

We do need to do that and we want to keep our planet for the next gens. Have a wonderful night Tito Ed

Oh yes you are right CJ, they will curse us from here to eternity if we ruin it!
Sweet dreams CJ and have a magical Monday when you wake in the morning!

Didn't know that there's a world bee day! will try to buy local produce honey tomorrow when we go to the market :)thanks for sharing it with us.. Have a great day Ed

Thanks Eylz, yes I did not know how it started so was glad I researched a bit.
I hope you managed to get some honey, that will be cool if you did!

I wasn't able to go out this morning.. got a bad headache :(

Oh nooo, I hope it got better Eylz 🤗

I love a aul bee. I see an awful lot of them in the grass unable to fly these days for some reason.

They maybe pollen drunk, too many fermented flowers that they have been visiting!

Hey Super Ed!

This was a very informative post about the bees and what we can do to help. I love honey and although it's very expensive here, I always try to buy it from local producers and avoid the number of syrups that are selling in the market now. Nothing like natural honey. Years ago, in the little house in the Andes that my family has, and I have mentioned before, we had a neighbor who was a beekeeper. But unfortunately, he got ill and had to leave. But I remember that in addition to the exquisite honey he sold several cosmetic products made with pollen that were wonderful.

Have a happy evening, Super Ed 🐝 😊

Hey Super Eli:)
I am exploring how you sponsor a Hive. I have a good friend in The Phillipines who was a honey distributor and we had a little biz together, however typhoon Odette destroyed the suppliers hives, totally wiped them out.
Yes I remember your families wee house in the Andes, that was a shame about your neighbour. The cosmetic products sounded interesting, I wonder what he made.
Enjoy your evening too Super Eli!

Thank you, Super Ed!
I remember some creams, especially one that was great for burns. And now that we are talking, I remember a syrup of propolis that was very good for coughs that would have been great for me right now;)
And so nice sponsoring a Bee :)

Oh that syrup would have been great, so what are you taking for it. I am trying to think it is so very rare that I get a cough, water probably.
Yes well the bee sponsoring let's see;)

Let's hope the bee sponsorship will happen 🐝 😄 I am not taking anything special. A syrup of aloe vera, but it's not doing anything. I hope that with a few days of rest, it will go away.

Time is a great healer and lets you bond more with Ageese!

I hope time will be enough, and yes jeje, Carlos went out to take Rodrigo to a friend's house and Ageese is lying with me, jaja 😻😸😺

Thanks for the awareness T!
Hahaha I guess it’s up to us non lions to help the bees now 😂
Those pictures are dope too, T the photographer.

You are so very welcome JW.
Those bees shots were with my phone, they let me get up close, such cool models they are :)
Heck yes us non lions need to be bees and help bees:)

You are really good at taking photos of insects and animals 😁.. Those bees are cute..

hehe thank you Jane, they make great models as they just pose for me, makes my job easy!
They really are cute, the bumblebees are so cute and hairy:)

Hi, Ed! It was World Bee Day! I saw the notification but there was no way I could participate when it was #MarketFriday. I was doing the mad dash to get that post together and taking in the market posts. I have a close friend that has some hives he tends and makes the best honey! I am the happy recipient on many an occassion.

I cannot say enough about the importance of bees! We need to be diligent in protecting them!

I have a fountain for them and a whole area in my yard is dedicated to a bee and hummingbird garden. Thank you for spreading the word!

Enjoy your football! :)

Wow, in Hive you do learn and the best thing is that there are people like you who make my learning easier.
Always on the terrace a bee arrives, sometimes they enter the house and my little one is scared because once a long time ago she was stung in one ear 🤣 and she still remembers it.
I buy honey from bees 😉.

Ah yes I remember that 1.50m got stung by a bee. Oh no, in her ear that would have been sore. Bees are cool though, it is wasps that I do not like.
Yes Hive is great, I learn something new every day:)
Have a wonderful new week Liz:)

Mon the bees!! :0D

hehe magic wee things that they are ;)

Bees are our future 🐝🐝🐝
Thank you for raising awareness through your awesome post!

#savethebees

Yes they are and thank you so much for agreeing and commenting, I appreciate it :)

My pleasure - no thanks necessary!

I'm a lifetime advocate of the bees since I was a little girl.

My parents tell stories of how I'd catch bees in my hands and release onto different flowers to pollenate in the yard! Of course I had no idea about pollenating. Just thought there were prettier flowers for them to visit!

Oh wow that is just awesome!
hehe that made me smile, what a brilliant thing to do. I think they were grateful to you.

Yeah they are amazing and so gentle too:)
