Is the Great Blue Heron Really Blue?

The other day I saw a heron fly across the pond and by the time I got the camera up to my eye and focused it had almost reached the opposite shore...

Above: The surprising thing to me was how blue the bird looked. I have not messed around with the colours in these shots.

The first two shots are cropped too much and the bird was fully in the shade. I guess the shade is making the colour extra blue.

I followed the heron around the pond, just in time to see it take flight again, this time in direct sunlight.

Now you can see the more natural-looking colour which I would call grey rather than blue.

Finally, the heron settled into the water and sat motionlessly long enough for me to get bored and move on... I hope you enjoyed these photos. Thanks for visiting!

Good shots. In our country, they are called gray herons.

Thank you very much! I believe they are slightly different birds. From what I've read, the great blue heron has longer legs and a longer bill, but I agree with you... they do look very similar.

Such awesome shots man.

Thanks a lot, I appreciate it! :-)

At first it looks quite unreal .. 😊 Wonderful shots Keith !

Those first couple of shots truly are unreal... I don't think the colour looks correct but it does help to explain the bird's name. Thank you, Barbara!

Wow! Really blue, indeed! Great shots!

Thank you! It's strange how blue the bird looked in the deep shade. Maybe it's a camera issue?

The rock even appears to have a blue cast... No matter what caused it, the bird is gorgeous!

Yes, herons really are beautiful birds. We don't seem to have as many of them this year though.

I hope they all have a successful bunch of fledglings this year!

I've spotted a few up in the treetops. It looks like they can't fly yet.
