All wheels rolled to the First Light Beach House for my sister-in-law's 60th birthday bash last weekend.
This 8-bedroom house sits high above volcanic rocks right on Sheffield Beach, and has seen our family celebrating a 30th, a 60th, and a second 60th this year. A 21st and a 70th coming up next year! Friends were joining the night of the party.
Pancakes were on the breakfast menu the morning of the party. I've been the family pancake maker for years. We were 18 in the house, I ended up making about 50 pancakes. We gave some to the staff working at the house. Nothing ever goes to waste!
My brother and my nephews outdid themselves—they took care of our three-night accommodation, flowers, table decor, balloons, and a special birthday cake. They also booked a cover band, Final Edition, who perform at the Salt Rock Hotel on Sundays.
We were once again spoilt by Private Chef Ballito, who arrived late in the afternoon to do the final food preparations.
As it is such an awesome venue, they asked if they could bring a photographer for social media marketing. This made taking photos of the food a tad difficult, and lighting wasn't always easy as everyone was spread out. Two cosy lounges, a large balcony overlooking the Indian Ocean, a bar counter, and a very long dining table made for many little groups.
My nephews also bought an inexpensive tiara for ZAR400 at a small local bridal store. Stunned when they later went to a party shop and found a plastic tiara for ZAR15! It was purely for fun; my sister-in-law did not want to wear it, but she put it on for a short while!
We had several main canapés and two desserts, starting with
Individual prawn and avocado cocktails
Fish & Prawn Croquettes with Tarragon Mayo
Butternut Stuffed Ravioli with baby tomato sauce & fresh Basil
Chicken Mayo in crispy Puff Pastry Shells
Shaved Roast Beef Crostini with Horseradish Mayo
Mini Taco Cups
Lamb Skewers
Mini Smoked Salmon & Leek Quiches
Food was coming fast and furious, so I did not get to take photos of everything, but there's one quiche on this platter of leftovers;)
Dessert consisted of Tiramisu Tartlets - looked like traditional milk tarts until we took a closer look and took a bite. I did not get to take a photo of that!
And my favourite dish of the evening
Profiteroles - mini choux puff pastries filled with whipped cream, topped with melted chocolate and fresh Strawberries
My darling sister-in-law has only ever had Dachshunds, always at least two, so they don't get lonely. She dotes on her pooches, so no guessing what birthday cake was chosen.
Good food, family, friends, and great music made for a fabulous birthday bash; one of the happiest occasions for a long while.
My brother and his wife sure know how to bring people together and make things happen, and my nephews are following in their footsteps!

One really can't beat pancakes eaten the traditional british way with sugar and fresh lemon juice.
your favourite dish of the evening?
I take it that was your portion? LOL
Haha, I wish!
We have our pancakes with cinnamon-sugar. And, if you want to indulge, add a big scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream😉 Can pretend the lemon juice neutralizes all the
goodbad stuff!LOl.
You cant convince me to change a habit of a life time

Hey @lizelle you are welcome.
Thanks for using @worldmappin 😘
I love pancakes but never have the patience to make them, as soon as they're off the pan I eat them, and then I have to wait a long long time for the next one. You must have been standing there all morning making those 50 pancakes!
The accommodation looks stunning (I just read your previous post) , what a great way to have a getting together with the family, especially with your son coming all the way back from the Netherlands, you must be over the moon to see him
It actually goes quickly. I make the batter the night before and use 2 pans at a time. They are best eaten straight from the pan!
It's an amazing house, made even better with the people. My son being there was the cherry on the cake! My younger son joined us last year but couldn't make it this time. Dean did visit him in Johannesburg though before coming down.
It was super having him home, a very short visit though, but we got to spend quality time together. He got back to the Netherlands last night😒
It certainly looks like everyone had fun and eats, and a belated happy birthday for Mandy on her 60th.

Beautiful atmosphere! I see the ocean ☺️ The thin pancake maker is one of the cooking tools I have on my shopping list for a while. And big big thank you for sharing the family time and food to food and culture community!
Oh it was magical hearing the ocean day and night, an awesome weekend and fabulous birthday party.

Come get MOONed!
Scones and now pancakes Lizzie, you really are making my tummy grumble you naughty woman.
Pancakes for me are with sugar and lemon juice. Of course Mrs T gets me to have the American type pancake which is more of a drop scone and puts proper maple syrup on it, which I quite enjoy now too.
What a great place to have those celebrations and from your post about the accommodation I know why you use it so often!
Coffee and toast time for me now thank you very much! So much for my fasting until lunchtime 🤣
