Unsuspecting Event

Life is full of events, both good and bad, heck these events are even what make life life. Events occur from time to time these in turn form memories that we keep with us for as long as we want.

There are some events that happen in life, that leave us with pleasant memories, while some happen and leave us scared, or leave an unpleasant memory behind, and whenever we remember those things we are left with a cloud of gloominess all around us.

Describe an event that has changed your life till date, or make up and describe an event that you think would change your life forever.

While growing up, my aunt doubled as our caregiver, more like a mother figure since our mum passed on early. She moved on with my family because she and her husband were separated, so she came with her only daughter. During one of the school sessions she had to travel, and her daughter who was way older than I and my siblings, who could pass as a chaperone, also had an exam to write at this same time in another city, so if my cousin was also to travel for her exams, we wouldn't have anyone older around. Mind you my dad worked with the customs authority and wasn't always around as he was always being transferred around the country.

So my cousin decided to drop us off at another if our aunt's house for the weekend, pending when she or her mum would return. The number one mistake she made was not calling Aunty Katherine before taking us there. By the time we got there, nobody was home, we kept calling Aunty Katherine to inform her, but she wasn't picking up, probably she was engaged with some activities.

We had gone in the evening, so while we were still waiting, it was getting late, and my cousin had to return home, so we had to wait till Aunty Katherine got back, when she eventually did, she was so upset with my cousin's act, she kept saying what if she had traveled and not in town, and she just left us on our own to wait for her.

We had to stay at Aunty Charlotte's house for a while. During one of the nights, we were attacked by some armed robbers. That night was the worst night of my life, I had woken up in the middle of the night to use the restroom when I was done with my business, I was about to climb my bed when I heard a sound, I thought within me 'who would be out this late', so I decided to go take a look.

Immediately I opened my door, I was greeted by a man with a mask, and held at gunpoint, I was threatened not to shout, so I swallowed all I wanted to scream, and tried as much as possible to keep quiet and calm, so I was taken to my aunt and her husband's bedroom door, and asked me to knock on it, and answer unsuspectingly if they respond, in order for them to gain entrance.

At this point I was scared out of my mind, I kept mumbling words of prayers to God asking Him to spare my life and give me another chance, promising to be a good girl.

As soon as I knocked my uncle who was still up asked who it was, and my shaky voice gave me away, this prompted him to come open the door, only to be greeted by his worst nightmare.

Long story short, they only took some valuables and cash and left, no one was harmed, they did their bidding and left, to this I was very grateful. I cried my eyes out that night because I was so scared and relieved after they had left.

This event really left a scar on me, for nights I couldn't sleep well without replaying the scenario in my mind, I was so scared to sleep, always having the thought of what if they returned.

Right now, due to this event, I always check and double-check that all doors are locked before going to bed, even if it is my house or not, before now I didn't really care so much about locking the doors, I could forget and go to bed without properly locking the doors, but that isn't the case now.

Thank you for stopping by 🥰🥰🥰

Armed robbery can really changed a person's perspective and life in general. I can only imagine how terrified you were that night, coupled with the fact that you were they one they used to get to your uncle. However, I liked that you learnt how to be more cautious and security conscious.

Amen, thank you.

Such incident can be traumatic, I have seen people who continue to have bad nightmares after experiencing such a incident. The worst part is such incident will make you extremely paranoid whenever you hear a sound or movement.

I'm glad you were not hurt.
