Are you lazy?
While I was scrolling my phone like a brainless zombie, I finally realized, “ Why is there more content on How to be productive / I tried to be productive for X time but I find it hard to find How to be lazy or I tried to be lazy for a week, here's what happened. ? “
Are we that obsessed with being productive? Or are we by default lazy and are trying to fix that by consuming productivity content?
If you’re lazy, no shame. With the rising of quiet quitting, people doing nothing, or even Tang Ping which basically a protest movement to rat race, I think they have something that I don’t know of, that being lazy or quitting the rat race isn’t that bad. That also resonates with an article I read that I found after countless scrolling that basically being lazy wasn’t that all bad and it even 10x your productivity. In rather disbelief as someone who likes being productive with my time, I set myself into an experiment of being lazy.
I think it was around five years ago when my life was reformed from being somewhat lazy to a busy bee. I started having less time for many things just because I was chasing money since that was all there was and was on my mind. I tried to maximize my time, learned productivity from all sorts of guru, people, you name it. I rarely get a break and even when I am traveling, I am always glued to my laptop stressing over work or just some opportunities I have to chase.
But last week, I had some opportunity becoming lazy as fuck. Here’s what I realized after being lazy.
Being lazy can be refreshing
I can’t remember the last time I sat down with my phone just scrolling like a zombie or playing a game for hours. It was really fun that I got so lost in either dumb shit on the internet and just RTS games that I recently pick up. During the time I was lazy, I honestly was in the slump and having creative blocks. But right after just because my boredom starts getting into me, I even took a blockchain course and cleaned my laptop, something I’ve not touched. Maybe this refreshing part won’t work if you’ve been lazy all your life but if you’re an overall productive person, being lazy can be refreshing because of this formula.
Maybe you’re like me who starts to discover new things to try, movies to watch, series/anime to follow. Now, after running out of what to talk about, I find dozens of ideas that start sparkling in my head.
Being lazy reminds me of gratitude
While being lazy, I pondered something that probably would never cross my mind. Being lazy is such a privilege. If you can lay around, doing nothing, not caring about your job, food, laundry, etc, that could mean you have a good life and everything is sorted for you. I realized that some people can’t afford to be lazy because they have family to take care of and they constantly worry about having food on the table and roof over their head.
When I was being lazy, I can tell you as much I didn’t have to worry about anything because my mom did my stuff. She even fed me well, did the work that was supposed to be mine, like laundry and cleaning my working space. I don’t have to be worried about rent because I live with my mom for the time being. There was nothing really stressing me out and I felt so free. I was just so grateful for everything I had at the time that allowed me to be lazy. There are people who can’t even rest for a day or be lazy for a day for many reasons.
Being lazy reminds me of my goals in life
With so much free time I have and my inclination towards avoiding anything I call “work”, I started going through my notes. I started checking out my previous posts, talked to people I’ve not talked to in years and just overall reminisced about who I was and what I was working on. While watching some movies here and there, I am also moved by some of the dialogues and how relatable the movie was to me; that simply reminds me why I did all the work I did. Maybe after all, those pain that I went through were worth it for the good times I have in this life.
Being lazy makes me more productive
Maybe after all Tim Denning was right on How To Mix Laziness With Productivity To 10X Your Results.. After I got lazy, had no sleep schedule, and basically not getting things done, I started feeling bad. Strangely,I also refreshed at the same time. It’s almost ironic how that sounds but I can say, I am in some kind of reset system. I am just ready to start things overall and be ultra productive like I am used to.
Once again, don’t be ashamed to be lazy or afraid of being lazy. Sometimes being lazy is good and it’s fine too!

What an interesting post Mac, it's true! We live in a race to be productive because it seems like that's what we are destined for, but if we stop for a moment to analyze the situation we should take some time out from being lazy so we can focus again and remind ourselves that we are alive.
I'm not saying we've been dead before, but it makes us broaden our perspective on what it really means to live.
I don't allow myself to be idle for long either, just spending time wandering around generates some guilt for me, it's a perennial need to have to be doing something of use.
You've left me pondering that being able to take a few days to be lazy is a privilege, so I'll treasure it more.
Thanks for this post of learnings @macchiata 🤗.
Don't feel too guilty next time you're being lazy. You deserve a day being lazy and doing nothing. We sometimes don't realize how good we have it when we have it. We only realize things when it's gone. That privilege comes to my realization when I see my cousin works so hard everyday while I can afford to be lazy just because I have some things sort out for a while. Now, I am being more appreciative when I can have my lazy days. Thanks for checking out @liveofdalla have a great day!
That whole 'let it rot' ideology in the youth in China as well as the 'quiet quitting' side of it in the west makes a lot of sense to me, where the pandemic gave people a lot more free time and made them realise what was most important to them. It created a lot of soul searching that led to people realising that effort spent was mostly for someone else that enjoyed the fruits of that labour. Why pour your soul into a corporation when you can do the bare minimum to get your paycheck and then put that effort into something that you feel more passionate and personal about?
Laziness I think can be great depending on what that laziness is influencing; if it means putting off the essentials then it's probably not good, but if it's allowing you to prioritise certain aspects of your life you feel are important then it's great. I think people in general have a strange perception of laziness due to worth ethics and today's very rapid lifestyle. Weird times.
That's true, I think the pandemic was somehow a reset for many of us. It opens us up to many possibilities and even the idea of working towards something we are all passionate about rather than slaving away to corporate life.
Many of us are somehow programmed to believe that being lazy is bad. Even in some religion, it's considered a sin too. If I were just not considering everything, proverbs 10:04 is one of the example and even repeated couple of times in proverbs that being lazy is bad. There are also bed time stories where lazy characters gets punished too. Those aren't helping and I wish the younger me learned that it's okay being lazy and not always be 100% productive.
After reading the tweet and after reading this article, I can say this, think of this laziness as a 1-week vacation. That's what I said the other day while reading @galenkp's post. Sometimes lying down and doing nothing for a day makes you relaxed and happy. I think it's something that every person should do by the way. I know not every person has the opportunity to do it, but everyone who has the opportunity should try it.
Yeah, that's all we need sometimes, a day of resting and doing nothing.
Seriously, being lazy is not bad at all. I know, coz I'm lazy af, lol. And just want ro share this did you know that because of my laziness I found this cryptoblogging site where I'm currently at and still doing good there. I mean, browsing on social media is not bad too coz I can actually find a more meaningful post where I can get something out of it. And, I know when to be lazy and when not. Specially if I really need it, then I will indulge myself, coz why not right, lol ☺️✨
See! being lazy isn't always bad haha. There always two sides of the coin but somehow we just tend to see one side whichever we want to believe in. I honestly used to resent people when they're being lazy but now I see that there could be a story/reason behind their laziness. Maybe they found comfort in being lazy and it helps them? Idk but I guess there can be something just by being lazy :D as long as we know the line haha
Haha yeah, aside fr the comfort they can really enjoy just lying on the bed while thinking nothing, just peace of mind and no overthinking.
How are you dear friend @macchiata good day
What a beautiful post, you say very true things, it is true that in recent years we have read hundreds of publications motivating you to be more productive, that is very good, as long as you do not exaggerate and go from being productive to being a fan of productivity, because if that happens, you miss out on the important things in life, like enjoying good moments of tranquility, or spending time with nature, a place where you meet your creative side.
What a beautiful experience that you have lived in these lazy days, I appreciate that you have shared this experience
have a beautiful day
Haha yeah, It was nice experiencing those after a long time. My mom was happy seeing me to rest because I am used to do many things and constantly trying to find newer things to do. I guess you see, I was falling into this toxic productivity hole and only these days, I can realize it's okay being lazy and even not being perfect or strive to be perfect at all times. Thanks for checking out anyway!
Your words resonate with me😺😺 Your content is great really, you highlight the good points which i wanted to follow.
let me know if you ever tried being lazy😊
I'm actually unproductive errr lazy in real life. I hope to follow your ideas here to use my time well especially thinking better on things that are relevant than being so lazy all the time. Thank you for sharing the positive side because i'm mostly on negative😓
Good plan. Lazy it is ;) You've convinced me!
hahaha yeah, there's nothing bad with being lazy in moderation😊
Mmm maybe laziness is not so bad. What I find is that when I’m too lazy, I at some point start feeling guilty for being too lazy and from there, it’s full beast mode. I become extremely productive after the period of intense laziness.
Being lazy in proportion isn't that bad, just like you experienced, you become more productive afterwards.
Absolutely brilliant. Being lazy, doing nothing will eventually lead to boredom and that creates new ideas to do something. The whole of life is formed from cycles.
Really great post you lazy bugger!
Stay well, stay happy, stay YOU :-)
hahaha yes! Who would have thought I'd come up with that realization by being lazy. Maybe after all, we all need being lazy once in a while. Have a great Wednesday/Thursday :)
You have given and interpreted the laziness in a whole new different approach. I agree to the part where you said that it reminds you of your goals in life. True enough, in the silence of time, you feel the rampaging of thoughts and out of the blue, you will just realize of the past goals you didn't met and new goals you set anew.
There's always two sides of the story and many ways to approach things. Our society resented the idea of being lazy and lazy people but rarely care enough to see the cause or the reason behind it all. When we see laziness on that more positive note, I believe that it has some positives just like what I mentioned above.
Enjoy your laziness :) I really get you on this one. I've had my extreme laziness episodes and I also had my "quality laziness" as well. It matters on what side of it are you and how do you see it.
hahaha thank you, I totally enjoyed my laziness. I felt like I deserved it, now back to work though :)
I am like this sometimes when I felt that I am so burnt out from work, everything. I didn't wanted to engage in blogging if I am in that mood as sometimes my comprehension is affected too, haha. Might leave irrelevant messages.
So I was only in my bed, playing games, scrolling some videos in YouTube or Facebook. It's okay though, I am living alone so I don't need to consider anyone. Hahah I can procrastinate all day.
Earning for a living is not that easy, but spending is. So yeah being lazy sometimes is fine too!
I see, I never force myself if I am not in the mood, I just let it be until I am once again in the mood for something even engaging with people. Burning out is the worst feeling there is and I don't wish that upon anyone. It fucking sucks. It's nice that you get to live alone and no people in sight to consider, I too have this privilege when I am alone :D . As they say, You only live once, which can also be seen as, if we work hard for what we earn, why not enjoy it too?
We cant be top productivity at all times, but we can choose stuff that are more useful to surf for us.
that's the thing. There are some people who fell into productivity rabbit hole and feel guilty of being lazy. I think being lazy shouldn't be associated with negative connotation because sometimes, just a bit of it, can be good.
