The not-a-photographer guy

I was out and about in the countryside yesterday shooting which I wrote a post about here. But the shooting wasn't just guns, although that was the main reason for me to be out there. I also took my camera and I shot these two images, and others, whist I was waiting for targets to present themselves so I could shoot them with my rifle.

I've never pitched myself as a photographer, here on the blockchain or in real life, in fact I'm the antitheses of a photographer; I'm not passionate about photography like I am with other things and so I invest zero time in it. I point, shoot, and hope.

I had my macro lens with me yesterday and decided to turn it on this bee and flower. Yes I know it's slightly out of focus; My excuse is the little bugger wouldn't keep still, and I didn't have my glasses on. You get the idea though...It's a macro shot of a bee collecting pollen.

I didn't have a tripod with me so ended up sitting the camera on my boot and flipping the screen out so I could see what I was shooting. I also used manual focus, hence the fact it's out of focus. Meh, it is what it is.

I also snapped the shot of the flower, not the exact one the bee is sitting on but the same type, which was a little easier as it didn't keep flying away! You can see the pollen sitting on the stamen, the reproductive organs of the plant.

I know these images aren't all that good and some of you could do better but these are mine and, as such, I'm pretty happy with them.

I generally like photography, looking at awesome pictures other people take and also taking a few when Faith and I are out and about, on holiday and stuff...But I don't like doing photography enough to invest any real time in getting better at it; It's just not on my radar. Besides, these days, taking the photograph is the smallest part of the process from what I know...The editing takes the time and so when I look at most photographs others take I figure they've been heavily edited to look better and I become less impressed; Photo-editing holds even less interest to me than photography itself...So I don't do it.

I'm happy that these two came out ok though and look forward to the next time I get to point my camera at something and press the shutter release button hoping for the best all the while.

And now, in true photographer style I believe it is the done thing to blab about my camera and lens so...Olympus OM-D E-M10 MkIII (mirrorless). The lens is the Olympus M.Zuiko ED 60mm f/2.8 Weather Proof Macro Lens...And that ends the technical portion of the post...Oh hang on, my tripod was my 5.11 ATAC Arid boot, and now that's the end of the technical section of the post. Don't ask me questions about it as I won't know the answers...Well, the boot I can answer questions on, not the camera stuff.

Thanks for looking at my post y'all, I'll catch you next time.

I'd be very happy with how they came out! My camera wouldn't be able to get even near that kind of clarity, especially not close up.

It's not going to win any Pulitzer prizes, but it's good enough to make that bee a star on hive! 🤣

Grazie mille.

This is a really great photo that requires a lot of exposure and skill. Great post. Thank you.

Hey there, thanks for taking a look at my post and your comment. Greatly appreciated!

Nice photos. Seriously.

I tried taking photos of a thistle flower at a teeny rest stop in very rural Nevada this summer. The wind was blowing so I ended up with half dozen out of focus frames. So it goes.

I love to take the photographs, but I'm no editor. Sometimes I'll chose the automatic fix in my foto viewer if I feel the color is not correct as I saw it. Otherwise all I do is crop to make the presentation better.

So feel free to be impressed with my photographs. I am with yours!

I love unedited photos...They aren't pretentious. I don't have a problem with editing though, it's just not my thing. I might bring the colour up in Google images here and there, but working for hours on one photo? I'd rather be doing...Well, anything else! Lol.

You always seem to present god images. I recall one of a hottie on a Segway. Me likey that one. :)

Adobe Lightroom "auto" adjustment of an image really cleans the colors up in my experience. The cameras can capture really crisp and sharp images but I think the color is lacking sometimes. The most time I spend on editing a picture is probably 45 seconds, if it takes longer then that then I should just take another picture lol

Lol...I think 5 seconds is my threshold...🤣

I get the need for it, people want perfection, but perfection doesn't exist. I might have a look at the software you mention; See if it can survive the 5 second test.

It totally can and it's free software, at least on my phone. Load the picture up, click "auto" and bam it's done and the colors look a fair amount better!

Jeez, seems like I'd have 2 seconds to spare! 🙂

That hottie was completely unedited. She was so hot she practically shimmered.

Lol...From the angle the picture showed I can only agree!

I think these are some really cool pictures! I want to eventually get a macro lens. We've been incredibly happy with the 50mm lens we just bought. The pictures the thing takes are crazy!

I have been rather enjoying doing things on manual focus, at least with the 50mm. It lets me really drill down to what I want to focus the picture on. I've gotten pretty good at taking some cool blurry shots with what I want in focus!

I think your focus was actually really good. You can't get everything into focus, at least in my opinion, so these looked really good. Especially with how quick those bees fly around!

That's the gold standard of tripods man, where can I buy one of those?!? I saw it in the professional photography magazine, Adaptive Photographer, just this past month!

Boot tripods are going to revolutionise the photographic world mate, you watch! Gotta be 5.11 boots though, anything else is sub-par!

The way I figure is that if the person likes the photo they took then that's good enough. The world is plagued by people seeking validation though so they do stuff with that in mind. I don't think it would bring a lot of true satisfaction though.

That bee wasn't very cooperative but I managed to get this shot which I'm happy with...The flower was easier to work with. 😁

For the guy who's not a photographer type of dude, that's a pretty awesome shot! I think I can even see the pollen on the flower petals. I wonder if that bee knows you're taking their photo, so they're just lining up the best angle for a shot of its meaty hind-legs.

I asked permission from the be buy he didn't answer, was too busy being a busy bee. The little bugger was pretty active, and I'm slow on the shutter, so it was hard to get the shot. Worked out in the end though.

It's a great photo, nonetheless! It's a hard life to be a bee, spreading pollen and crap for the silly humans.

Yeah, it's a pretty integral job to humanities survival. Lucky bees aren't as lazy as most humans.

It's true, and we've got loads to thank them for. Just imagine if every human is as productive and united as honey bees!

Exactly. I always thought you should be clicking everything naturally and manually and capture great photos. It seems you are not a pro if you do not touch ups and edit your photos. I like to shoot photos but the extra work I need to put in to edit is something I am not keen on. I am okay if my one shot clicks come out nice. If not, I discard them.

You and I share the same ethos when it comes to photography it seems. Keeps things simple.

Good: Keep.
Shit: Delete.
Editing: Can't be bothered.

🤣

Could not agree more. To be honest, I tried editing. It was too damn hard and time consuming. So, the simple formula is to click 10 times. One must come out good- naturally 😃

Some people love it and that's ok, a hobby is a hobby after all I guess and we all have different likes and dislikes. For me, I don't see the point in spending the time to learn how to use editing software when in truth I don't care that much about my photos. I think the true essence of photography has been lost due to digital editing...A bad photo can be made to look good and that sort of defeats the purpose of being good at photography in the first place.

For many I think the term good editor is more relavent than good photographer.

Yeah, that way I may be considered a traditional or a conventional individual. But, I always thought that the great photographer would click amazing photographs with his/her skills in photography (angle, aperture, shutter). The photo editing in my view is another profession. I completed agree with what you are saying here.

Well if that is out of focus, I need to get my eyes checked. I thought the picture of the bee was awesome, especially considering the tripod you were using 😁

It was a special tripod, only the most below-average photographers have access to such technology and advanced methods. 🤣

I think you are above-average. Just because one does not take a lot of photograph's does not lower the quality which you shoot.

I think I'm good enough ti satisfy my own requirements, photo snobs would not like my shots, but that's ok. I can deal with it.

The old saying:
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,
applies to viewing photo's, paintings or just staring at things around us that make us smile.

You are pretty good for a non-photography-guy :)

Thanks Eve...I'm much better at other things but being average at something has never stopped me from doing it if it's something I enjoy. 😉

Not bad for a not-a-photographer-guy! I like the bee shot a lot! As long as you are happy with them, that's all that matters, they are your memories after all. I think you take nice pics tho!

I can't be bothered with editing either, maybe a crop but other than that I have no idea how to process a photo and little to no desire to learn. I click, if I like I keep if not fuck it! In the trash it goes!

I agree, if I'm happy that's all that matters...I'm often not happy and as you said, that's when the delete button gets a workout. 🤣

I think these two came out ok, for a scrubber like me, so I'll keep them. 😉

That is a much better bee shot than most of mine. Picture taking can be fun and seeing what comes out of the camera at times can be a blast, those Wow look at that moments. I like being just a backyard picture taker, I do try to do some edits, and I am still learning a lot about photography, but I am still a pre-hobbyist at it.

That's what Unlike about it, the enjoyment of looking at a shot I took and saying, yep, that's adequate. I do it for me. If I didn't have this blog no one would ever see my photos. 🙂

Nice shots! I really love that second one, that's badass.

I like how the pollen is visible...It looks really cool I think and considering my skills, or lack of them, I'd have to say it's one of my better ones. :)

Lol, thanks for the camera specs! Pretty decent shots in fact, I like it.

All good photographers seem to add the specs if their equipment. I wanted to add in the specs on the tripod too, as it was pivotal to the success of the shot. 🥴

I like your tripod ;-). A pile of rocks work well also if you don't have a boot handy.

Rock tripods are for the super-experienced only...I'm still at boot-stage although maybe I'll work my way up someday!

Really awesome Luca!

Actually you did a very good job, I like the pictures!

They came out pretty well...For me I'm about as happy as I could be considering how difficult I find macro photography.

Practice makes perfect you'll see
