How to Cook Wheat Noodle Soup

Dark stormy clouds before the rain.

4:55 PM. The sky was dark. The wind was blowing cold, chilly air. An imminent rain is coming.

“Ah yes,” I said to myself—another rainy evening. Good luck.

Every time it rains, I feel a little sad. Sort of.

“Hey, are you okay?” asked my wife as she looked at me. Concerned.

“I’m All right.” I shrugged.

“I should cook some hot soup this evening,” I said as I approached her.

“What soup?” she said.

“Well, we have some wheat noodles here. This will do.”

I searched at our pantry, and I saw some misua, or wheat noodles, and a can of sardines. Perfect.

Back in the day, my mother would cook this recipe on rainy days. Living in poverty changes the way you think and feel about certain things. It reminds me of how we survived during those days. A lifesaver if you will.

Fast forward. I have “updated” this recipe with a few modifications I made up myself and improvised it.

Here are the ingredients:

Preparing the ingredients

  1. 6 packs of wheat noodles (misua)
  2. One can of sardines (you can choose any sardine brand but I prefer Senorita for its taste)
  3. Four cloves of garlic minced
  4. One piece of onion chopped
  5. One piece of tomato chopped
  6. One small piece of ginger(for a spicy taste) chopped
  7. One green chili sliced
  8. One piece of spring onion chopped
  9. 8 pieces of fish balls (optional)
  10. Olive oil(optional) you can use vegetable oil also

Mise in place

Procedure

1.Cook the fish ball in a pan with a small part of water. Wait till the water evaporates.

Cooking the fish ball with tomatoes

2.Add oil.
3.Cook for one minute on medium heat.
4.Add the chopped tomatoes. Cook until the tomatoes start to juice.
5.Add ginger.
6.Then add the garlic with the onions. Saute.
7.Add the green chili.
8.Saute for one minute at medium heat.
9.Open the can of sardines. Add to the pan. Mix.
10.Cook for one minute on medium heat.
11.Add four cups of water to the pan.
12.Add soy sauce. Salt and pepper to taste.

13.Wait for the water to boil.
14.As soon as the water starts to boil, add the wheat noodles.

15.Cook for three to four minutes.

Almost done

16.Remove from heat.
17.Garnish with some green spring onions.
18.Serve while hot.

I remembered this recipe. every time I'm in a hurry or Im out of budget. This is one of my favorites. Simple yet very nutritious and affordable.

Ahhh, I suddenly crave for it. This is good to eat with hot steamed rice. You know what I did kapah ganyan ulam namin, I will put some of cooked misua with sardines in a bowl then put a rice in it. Grabi, heaven! Perfect for rainy day.

I didn't like this when I was young but when I became an adult, I've been craving it. Really the best food when it's raining. Also reminds me of childhood.
