This place has always really confused me. I've never been sure if it was an actual social media site, a personal blogging site, or a site like Medium (which I'm not sure how to label). Really, I think it's probably a little bit of all three and maybe more.
Back in 2016, I felt like Steemit should be or would become more like Medium so I tried to write a running column of short to mid-length posts about various aspects of living in Japan. I liked doing that and felt like it was a good way to make content. It really pushed me to look at the world around me and find things that people might not know about in Japan, or cultural differences that people might find interesting.
At that time, I felt like people here should really try to make content that would be useful to other people, but that kind of thinking, imposing my view of useful on others, quickly became troublesome.
I still think running a column or a weekly post is a good way to make content, but it can be hard to keep up with over the long haul. I ran out of things to say about living in Japan and felt like I could’t repeat myself, although now I realize that it's perfectly okay to do so (because new readers join in from time to time).
These days I just share what I'm working on, which is mostly short porms that follow the typical 5-7-5 syllable haiku pattern. It's something that I enjoy doing, and fortunately, I tend to get a few really great comments each week that encourage me to continue.
As you said in your post, posting about things that interest you, that you would do even if there was no one to share it with (you didn't say that part), is the best way to go. That way, the reward is always just in making something and anything else is icing on the cake.
If there's no personal enjoyment in doing something like this, a hobby essentially, then it doesn't make sense to do it really. If a person enjoys what they do they'll do it with more passion and personality, and get better personal value from it.
That line you write above says it all really.
