Elves bring the magic of Christmas to life with their playful and cheerful personalities. They help Santa spread joy and make the season feel extra festive. With their charm, they create a cosy and fun atmosphere that’s perfect for the holidays.
Yesterday, I spent some time working on my own elf pattern. Adding a few details was a bit tricky, but I’m really happy with how it turned out!
I’d love to share it with you.
Materials:
Yarn: Green, red, beige (or skin tone)
Hook: Size suitable for your yarn (e.g., 3.5mm for DK yarn)
Stuffing: Fiberfill or similar
Embroidery floss: Black for mouth and brow.
Black beads: eyes
Abbreviations:
ch: Chain
sc: Single crochet
inc: Increase (2 sc in the same stitch)
dec: Decrease (sc two stitches together)
st: Stitch
Instructions:
Head: (Beige or skin-tone yarn) 🧝
R1: 6 sc in magic ring.
R2: Inc around (12).
R3: (1 sc, inc) x 6 (18).
R4: (2 sc, inc) x 6 (24).
R5-R9: Sc around (24).
R10: (2 sc, dec) x 6 (18).
R11: (1 sc, dec) x 6 (12).
R12: Dec around (6).
Stuff the head and fasten off.
Body: (Green yarn) 🧝
R1: 6 sc in magic ring.
R2: Inc around (12).
R3: (1 sc, inc) x 6 (18).
R4: (2 sc, inc) x 6 (24).
R5-R10: Sc around (24) (increase rounds if prefer a longer body)
R11: (2 sc, dec) x 6 (18).
R12: (1 sc, dec) x 6 (12).
R13: Sc around (12).
Stuff the body firmly, make a point collar:
Chain 6.
Work back down the chain:
Sc in 2nd chain from the hook.
Hdc in the next chain.
Dc in the next chain.
Hdc in the next chain.
Sc in the last chain.
Slip stitch into the next stitch on the neck base to secure the point.
Skip 1 Stitch, then repeat the point sequence around the neck.
Finish off when the points encircle the neck. Weave in ends.
Legs 🦵🦵
R1: 6 sc in magic ring (shoe colour).
R2: Inc around (12).
R3-R4: Sc around (12).
Switch to red yarn.
R5-R10: Sc around (12) (increase to a preferred leg length)
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
Repeat R1-R4 for the top x2, Attached to the top of the shoe.
Arms (Make 2, beige, green, red yarn): 💪💪
R1: 6 sc in magic ring (beige for hands).
R2: Sc around (6).
Switch to red yarn.
R3-R4: Sc around (6).
Switch to green yarn.
R5-R9: Sc around - increase to preferred arm length.
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
Ears: 👂🦻
R1: Ch 5.
Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook:
Sc in the first chain.
Hdc in the next.
Dc in the next.
Slip stitch into the last chain.
Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.
Hat (Green yarn with green brim) 🎩
R1: 6 sc in magic ring.
R2: (1 sc, inc) x 3 (9).
R3: Sc around (9) - Increase rounds to preferred hat size.
R4: (2 sc, inc) x 3 (12).
Continue increasing similarly until you reach 24 stitches.
Sc around for 2 rows. Switch to green yarn.
R7-R8: Sc around (24).
Fasten off.
Attach a bell or pompom to the tip of the hat.
Assembly 🧝
Sew the arms and legs to the body.
Attach the head to the body.
Place the hat on the head and sew it slightly tilted for a playful look.
Add black beads for the eyes. Use pins to mark the position.
Attach the bead eyes and sew a smile.
Add a button and crochet belt (24 chains and single crochet on each st.) and a buckle ( folded electric tape or similar and cut to shape)
All done!
He is a friendly looking elf.
We named him Bobbin. He is now our family Elf!
