Well the intention was to prevent abuse by bots, exploiting too much. Free2Play Wild for humans would be the better option, in my opinion.

From what I have always understood, the wildpass is to prevent players to earn for ever with a one time buy, that's not sustainable.
It's more about the bots I think. Before, you could make a few SPS even just using a very minor deck without many cards. That was not sustainable. Now, it's a little harder as one has to have the right cards to play high enough to win back the 2k DEC - that is mostly legacy players that can do that.
It was introduced to stop bot farms, that's what stated the proposal
