Comment behavior and engagement
Obviously the previous post wasn't enough! Whenever there are above 100 comments on a post, I think there was a lot to be said that wasn't said in detail. That requires more plots and more words :)
I present you with a curious plot which I think I will spend quite a bit of time explaining. First thing is the two axes. X-axis is comment count in last 6 months for active hiver (for that definition, please see this post). Y-axis is the Comment Ratio. Again as a reminder:
Comment Ratio (CR) = Number of Comments / Number of posts
The circle size is the comments/day.
What I am trying to accomplish from this plot is to separate the automated messages (I call them spam) from the messages from legitimate humans. The plot gives us a wide band but with very definite upper and lower ends. These ends are defined by the Yellow and Green lines respectively. The folks who plot near the upper yellow line, comments more than they post, relatively speaking. There is nothing wrong with it, that is just their commenting behavior. People who plot near the lower green line, comments less than they post, relatively speaking. Those that plot low near the origin are less engaged than those that plot higher. I plot us "magnificent seven", and you can see that we are different, but we plot in the middle.
Boomy plots higher towards the yellow, as he posts sporadically and comments a lot. Galen and Taraz posts a lot and comments a lot, but Galen comments more than Taraz. I plot smack in the middle, the perfect average guy! :) Mind you this is not due to any prompt. This is just our typical behavior over last 6 months. So, whatever, this shows is real; this is the way to react on this blockchain.
So What?
Well, I am telling you. Here are the things I like to do:
- If you want your name to be displayed and find out where you are please let me know
- If you are at the lower end of the plot, you are not engaged
- If you think or know that your posts are not getting enough traction this could be one reason
- If you want to improve, comment more
- If you want to comment more, do thoughtful comments that show you read the post and are interested
- If you have done all these for six months and still haven't had any traction, ping me
I can help.
If you are a spammer, also please ping me :)
I can help there as well, but you may not like that help.
I have been woeful is late. I need to get my game back on!
I miss your posts! That is all I am going to say :)
To quote Arnie... I'll be back... 😀😀
Look out, you're going to be inundated with people calling themselves out as a spammer!
I thought that too 😀
If they don't...they eventually get found out anyway I guess.
Doesn't take long with some of em!
...and Thor's hammer drops.
It's the best hammer there is!! 😀
A very handy tool.
Ha ha ha.
And I might buy a lottery ticket and win a jackpot!
Lol, stranger things have happened.
Sounds like a trap! ;)
As usual, cool data dude - thanks for sharing!
All I'm saying is... you can noodle a catfish.
Looks like I need to up my comment game!
I wonder if there was a quality of comment metric, what would happen
nah, its the other way around. You post a lot relative to your comments, because in CR, post is in the denominator. Comments are normalized by posts. I got the idea looking at you specifically :) Rather you and Galen:)
Expecting a large response? 😃..
Ha ha ha!!
You know if hive is an ocean and givers are fish; this technique might work:)
Because fish are very stupid! 😂
Ever since you told me that active Hivers do 20 comments per day I tried to achieve that number, but I think I fall short on almost all days and not for the lack of trying :)
So I am curious where I am on that plot :)
There you go.
The simple way to interpret this; you post more than I do.
So while we both comment about the same, we fall at near the same vertical line, so out X-axis (comment counts) values are similar. But you post more than me, so your CR is lower, as post is in the denominator.
You see, if I know the CR of someone, I know exactly how he/she comments and posts.
Very cool! Looks like I comment above 5 but less than 10 comments per day and am just under total 2k comments. I still seem to be in the fairly active engagement area not below the line, right?
You are at the same area as Taraz! That is saying something in terms of engagement.
you are very active and highly engaged
I fall short of this too - maybe only a few comments each day...
Curious to see what I can do to improve though!
Wasn't expecting that 🤣
But then this was expected 🤣🤣🤣
By the way, in the last few monthes I commented lesser than what I usually do, so probably I must be somewhere near the origin (hopefully not to close, though!).
I say you are doing good.
Well, definetely higher than I was expecting! Thanks for sharing this :)
Interesting chart! As much as I comment and spend time in Discord it is a bit surprising to me!
why? you are at the superhuman level:)
If I didn't know you I'd call you a bot :)
I just talk a lot! But to be fair, not all of my comments are high quality and thoughtful. Some are only announcing Ecency Points tips or curation votes.
nothing wrong with that!
So kind of you. They better don’t ignore this help, lol.
Nothing beats getting engaged and engaging with others, it brings life to everything content creation.
Looks like everyone likes my open arm call to the spammers :)
I do. It will keep them busy thinking why, lol.
I post once a day most of the time now. I try to engage by commenting as well. I think that I am doing a better job at that than I was doing in the past. But I should still do better considering that I sit in front of my pc for most of the day.
You are doing well
Does that mean that I qualify for your help?(I have no idea how long I have been doing this. Perhaps less than 6 months?)😛My splinterlands art contest posts and weekend-engagement posts are doing good. But some days I still make posts that earn 0.30 or 0.40.
Let me look into your posts. For a Rep 72, you shouldn't have this problem, so there is something you are doing wrong.
Here is my question: If I find what you are doing wrong, do you like for me to tell you? I am usually brutally honest and often many people, who I call 'wallflowers' do not like it.
So after I find out what you are doing wrong, do you like for me to tell you?
yes, please tell me.
Here we go; please note, you asked for an opinion, and this is my opinion. This doesn't mean this is the truth. This is just an honest opinion.
This is not enough for someone with rep 72. So take your own advice "losers path is not for you"
Stop posting for a week
After a week think what does those sketchbook posts doing for you? Are those good art? I look at a lot of art. Both my kids go to art school. The older for 9 years. Lot of your art, in my view can be mistaken for art from a 6 year old. Now art is always subjective. If you produce that art in a 30 ft by 20 ft canvas or on a wall of similar dimension, it can be spectacular. But on a computer screen it is juvenile. For me anyways.
Think about what people want, how they interact, clearly what you are posting doesn't interest people, so what can you do differently
I find people are always interested in others true daily life, that is easy, because everyone has it. What you have done today is something always interests others, because you are unique and you live in a unique place on an unique street
Focus of quality as opposed to quantity. If you produce two good posts a week that earns you $10 is better, as opposed to seven marginal posts that earn you the same $10.
So, in short, take a short break. Come back in a week with new angle, new ideas. Maybe in these new posts there can be short segment for your art too.
Hope this helps.
Thank you. I will try to take a break. Perhaps after it I will be able to do better.
by the way I changed my art multiple times. Does my older pieces made on wood or canvas still seem juvenile for you? Or does that mostly apply to my digital art?
Dang, I thought sure I would make this one! 😃
You did. Just wasn't displayed. Because sometimes people take an issue with it :)
I'd only take issue with it if I was one of the bad ones!
Fair :) :)
Interesting plot and even more interesting is the relationship of the Magnificent Seven; that is the essence of Hive.
These days, I’m less engaged than in previous months due to a lack of time, but without a doubt, engagement is the foundation of everything here—enjoying and leaving a bit of ourselves in the posts we read.
Catch me if you can! :)
That's the plan :)
Engagement and more engagement
Interesting data. I'd like to see where I am on the plot. I have a hunch that mine will be a lot closer to the green line but I have been working on commenting more than strictly posting.
Ouch! :)
Don't worry I am messing with you. Its all good.
Thanks! I'm more in the middle than I expected.
Thanks for your efforts inspiring us to be more active and engaged in hive. It's certainly motivated me.
I'd love to know my own place in there! Thank you very much for doing this! After that, I'll ask you again in 6 months, if I can do it all right 😛
you are okay, just about, like a high C or low B maybe, you are passing, but a lot more can be done, especially now that you have been around a bit, so expectation is high.
Remember the X-axis is log-scale, so it appears, that you are close to me, but you are not :)
In reality this is how far you are from me :)
For now... You just wait... So, if I understand correctly:
In the last 6 months I have made around 820 comments, and my comment to post ratio is around 10. That means, for each post that I make, I make 10 comments. That's not too bad, given my limited time and that I really try to read through posts thoroughly.
I'm probably not getting high up there. If I can read 2 articles a day in average and comment, I'll be happy with that. In this scale, I'll go for quality over quantity, but will always do my best to get higher up there - but just not for the sake of being up there, but because it's worth it 😊
That is the right attitude! Excellent
I think it's a list that interests me because I've been quite active in the last 6 months. Maybe not so much in November and December 2024, but I'm curious to know where I stand on the list, so can you point me out?
there you have it
So I comment and but also share posts
you post a lot also comment a lot
Maybe I should have a KPI where I'd try to achieve at least ten thoughtful comments a day 😀
you comment a lot and you post a lot
It works. I have more upvotes on my posts, mainly Splinterlands and other games, but there's still room for improvement. I like to post on other subjects too but those don't get as much engagement as games.
Very interesting information. I would add that sometimes the bot's will respond as intended and if we reply to the bot comment then a human usually responds to that comment from the same account unless it is also an AI generated response?
Would be interesting to see if it's possible to detect apparently humans responding to humans after the first bot response.
If this is the case there may be an element of double counting and skewing the figures. Good post 👍
comment is first level, reply has its own field in the blockchain.
I like these plots! Interesting stuff!
It would be interesting to see the same plot with only comments of a certain minimal length.
This is what we do to find engaging comments for our @topcomment curation service.
This filters out all the 'great blog' comments.
Then still you have the spam accounts and the microblogging posts that are technically comments, but aren't necessarily engaging. We filter those out as well.
This might give you a different graph!
I don't think length should be a metric:)
for example, compare this length to your length :)
would you call me a spammer?
I think length can tell a lot about the quality of a comment. A comment of two words will probably not be really engaging.
that is your opinion :)
When twitter was twitter; this comment with 20 words got 3.5M likes. When any comment by any hiver that is 20 words gets there please wake me up :)
"No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion..."
If someone posts 50 comments a day, only sharing "Great post" comments I don't think that is engaging.
And that is indeed my personal opinion indeed.
There is a big gap between 2 and 20 words.
And a long comment doesn’t mean that it is and engaging and high quality one either.
You can't filter objectively on quality.
exactly my point
I can filter and evaluate when I read a comment based on context, so can you.
But I don't want an algorithm to determine that and make decision on it
I’d be interested to see where i am on the plot please. 🙏
you are okay, neither here nor there, which may not be a bad thing :)
You just described my entire life 🤓
mine too!
If it is useful for your posts and charts you can always display my name without my permission :)
Regarding comments one of my annual goals is to maintain a comment/post ratio greater than 20 but this year due to so many commitments I think I am under this ratio and I definitely need to improve
@tipu curate
There you have it. You are very active.
Upvoted 👌 (Mana: 23/43) Liquid rewards.
much mahalo! ur posts have made me decide to give splinterlands a try. so far, I only have tried the demo. It looks like a cool game tho..
💪😎👊
Put the $10 in and buy a spellbook. You won't regret it.
👊😎 yea, from what i seen of it seems that is definitely the way to go.
I dont know why it took me this long to really try it. :P
Interesting post and plot AZ - I've been more active in Discord than I have commenting on Hive... and that counts for...
Nothing.
I shall endeavor to refocus some of that time to interacting more on Hive, in a meaningful way, rather than perusing Discord and being a general goober :)
commenting in discord is just killing idle time ......... well maybe getting to know people; that said, you are not at a terrible spot.
I shall keep working on improving 😊
He is
Ok, I have a request and I do not know where to ask, so please bear with me and point me into the right direction.
The other day a friend and I where having a debate on what helped us better (the smaller accounts) to grow our HP: a lower or higher HIVE price.
I thought on asking you since you always bring up the metrics to support your views, and honestly my friend and I only have a loose understanding of how HIVE price might affect the HP component of author rewards.
Thank you for the question.
You can't control price. No one can.
However, a lower hive price helps you earn more hive today. If hive prices are higher tomorrow or a year from now, then the future value of your earning can be higher. Provided you keep all your hive powered up and compounded and never sell any hive.
Thanks a lot. I thought it would be that way but honestly had little arguments beside my own observations.
Can you display my name?
I don't know if u will read me, cause i'm muted, but if other person see my claim, could warn him?
Thanks
Always looking forward to your posts. Data driven insights that would greatly help the community thrive. Your posts exposes the abuses of some at the expense of everyone. I hope I belong with the good guys here 😅
