Good news for all HiveSQL developers and users: after a short switch to subscription mode, its use is free again!
What's happened?
For those who missed the last few episodes regarding the funding of the HiveSQL proposal, here is a quick review:
Episode 1 - No longer free but still free
On March 31, the HiveSQL proposal ceased to be funded following the withdrawal of its vote by a major stakeholder, the main reason being that, given the price of HBD, many proposals were considered overpaid.
Although I can understand the reasons for this unvote, I was unfortunately not warned beforehand. HiveSQL has therefore switched to subscription mode.
As soon as I understood what was happening, I made sure that it switched to free mode so as not to disrupt the proper functioning of the many applications that rely on it.
More on this in the post I published right after
Episode 2 - Free but not for long
A few days later, @good-karma shared his idea and script to return the "overpaid" part of the funding to the @hdbstabilizer project. Other funding recipients also offered other solutions.
So I expressed my opinion on this subject, namely the commissioning of a similar "return script".
I also announced that, since now the overpaid part has was automatically returned and failing to be funded again, HiveSQL will go back to subscription mode. This is unfortunately what happened on April 13 at 00:00
More on this in this post
Episode 3 - Finally back to free
Fortunately, thanks to a large number of members of the community and their vote for the HiveSQL proposal, it has been funded again for a few hours and HiveSQL is therefore again completely free for all those who use it for their applications or their project.
I especially want to thank the following people who responded quickly and made this happy ending possible:
@deanliu, @laruche, @ixindamix, @wesphilbin, @vikisecrets, @cetb2008, @sandymeyer, @solarwarrior, @arunava, @vcelier, @regenerette, @riandeuk, @ridor5301, @bozz, @tfranzini, @vaultec, @slobberchops, @spectrumecons, @trangbaby, @notaboutme, @chasmic-cosm, @coffeelovers, @officialhisha, @amr008, @jedigeiss, @steemaction, @buggedout, @rasbas, @smooth, @irwanumpal, @richardfyates, @natepowers, @x9ed1732b, @blind-spot, @haitch, @sumatranate, @distantsignal, @steemseph, @lances, @matheusggr, @solymi, @krautart, @jelly13, @hernleon74, @edicted, @stayoutoftherz, @phoenixwren, @oldmans, @branbello, @steempress, @fredrikaa, @ash, @johnhtims, @ace108, @orkin420, @yuriitonkov, @jfang003, @geekgirl and @trostparadox
Of course, all those who had already voted for the proposal and maintained their vote have my gratitude as well.
In less than 2 days, the HiveSQL proposal went funded again and, most important to me:
HiveSQL is Free for All!
PS: I learned a lot from these events and I will be sure to share this experience with you, which I will do in a separate post.
Thanks for reading!
Support our proposals!
Great to hear you've got your funding back again.
If nothing else this whole experience has helped us to build some awareness about the DHF and some of the important projects it supports.
Thank you for your support @buggedout.
Yes, I learned a lot, and not just technically. I look forward to sharing my thoughts on this.
Good stuff... I use to to find both abuse and good content... it is most useful!
I found out yesterday about it and voted it.
Hugs!
Thank you for your support @slobberchops!
Glad it will enable you to continue your work by using HiveSQL for free.
Already voted yes. You've done wonderful things for us... For @wolfhart ... for the Community... Thank you all...

Thank you for your unfailing support my friend, much appreciated! 👍
Great news! I was actually just discussing this with @slobberchops just now and he told me.

I'm happy for you too, because I know you recently discovered HiveSQL and started to feel how powerful it can be.
Cheers. I am finding a few uses for it. A good excuse to use my dormant SQL skills.

Let the SQL Guru in you awaken... 🤓
That is great to hear. HiveSQL is definitely a must have tool and service.
Thank you @geekgirl. I know you have fun playing with it 😉
Great. I am glad everyone pitched in and got the project funded again. I know a few projects like @amr008's engagement project used it and the alternatives were slower in comparison.
Thank you @jfang003
I'm so glad I voted for it!
I will be checking Engage. I've seen some of my friends in Hive are using it.
Huggggs!
Thank you @regenerette. Hopefully you will enjoy using Engage as much as I do.
Hugs back 🤗
I look forward to some free time soon to get it and start using it. Plus, I will be recommending it to some newbies soon.
Much appreciated.
With respect and friendship!
Glad I could support the project!
Thank you @distantsignal 🙏
Maintained my vote. I'm really glad others stepped up to help! Pretty cool. What a rollercoaster!
Thank you for your unfailing support @jasonbu! Yes, rollercoaster it's been! 🎢
Hooray! I'm glad enough people voted to make the difference.
The support from the community has been nothing short of fantastic. Thank you for being part of it @phoenixwren
Always happy to help, I just had realized that day that I have several votes to give out and I want to make my votes count as much as possible. I don´t know anything about SQL and development of such. Sounded important to me.
This is a superb experience of participating in the governance of our blockchain, even without knowing all the intricacies.
Yes, this is important and I hope that what you have done will serve as an example to many others.
Wonderful News ^_^ Glad to hear this initiative was a success
Thank you for your support @orkin420. You have been part of it and made the happy end possible.
I am very happy! Glad my vote helped :)
Oh yes, it did. Every vote matter and this is how a community can show its strength. Thank you @blind-spot!
Some top notch activist effort from your side here. Excellent job! 👍
Thank you for your support @notaboutme. You made it happen, more than me 😉
At your service friend @arcange
Thank you for your support my friend. 🤗
very good news ... it feels great to finally be able to support this proposal project ....
Good news indeed. Thank you @ridor5301
I feel you 😉
What a relief! I was worried we would have to start paying for the 3Speak desktop app to continue using hivesql 😄
I bet you're not the only one in relief. 😅
This is great to hear! I'm glad it was possible to make it free again!
Thank you @tfranzini
That's great news. That will make a number of people I follow very happy! 😊

Thank you @gillianpearce. The more happy people the better. 🙂
Though it was not a pleasant experience for the users, I'm glad that HiveSQL is free again. 👍 Cheers!
Thank you @bala41288

^ interesting to see banky things happening or behaviors, sorry you didn't get any warning nor some others apparently as that doesn't seem very "Community" oriented. It does seem very "bankster" and isn't this supposed to be about at least the illusion of a form of decentralization and not acting like the Iron Bank? js
take care
Let's be honest, there were (very few) talks about the idea of doing it on a MM channel and I didn't see them.
It's more a matter of good and appropriate communication than "banksterism".
Little to no communication on just yanking stuff with no warning isn't very professional but unfortunately it's reflecting in other things and perhaps some fresh 'blood' and better communication happens then people can chill on the floating around discords trying to sway people.
A lot of Hive users who don't show/have a lot or are feeling shaky on it are not stupid and should feel okay to just ask basic things without the ones who precarved some pie out coming in to sway others who disagree. People can be civil and it's a better look in the end but if "Greed is good" then the price would have mooned maybe? I like Hive to network, learn and create content on as a hobby when I have time and hope it doesn't get too "feudal" feeling.
I do hope smoother waters are ahead but most of us are diversified or don't want to get in deep here which also could be on purpose , it's the top and the bottom with no middle and that's not very supportive of even the top if the whole support columns just go "well I can stick it into doge cause it's more fun"
🤦♀
I would encourage keeping all the HBD and selling it at the higher rate and giving everyone a BUFFER for if things get unfunded again. So if you get your HBD while valued at $2 for a month perhaps that gives us a 1 month buffer? It MAY go back to it's peg after the HF so let's take advantage of this time to create a bit of a buffer.
Interesting idea. What you are proposing could indeed be a solution, but it also brings its share of problems.
This whole story sheds light on the difficulty of having a stable and serene service financing environment when it is based on an unstable means of payment.
This is something that I hope I can write more about in the next few days.
I thought i already stated my proposal. Just cash out HBD at the higher rates and anything about $1 you count as extra time the HiveSQL for free lasts. See how people feel about it i guess and if they'll continue to vote your proposal since you're changing the terms of sort. But my guess is people will be even more interested.

❤️❤️❤️
Would be great if you could hold your horses the next time and wait, before breaking apps for introducing subscription mode with 1-day notice for 4 days before turning it back to free again. 😉
With all due respect, the unfunding and switch back to subscription model all happened before @arcange even knew it had happened (apparently due to auto-switching in the code).
I had conversed with arcange about getting set up on HiveSQL and received his instructions.
When I followed his instructions, though, the auto-response said HiveSQL had received a donation, instead of sending me my login credentials.
Within the two minutes it took me to craft a response to arcange explaining the problem I was encountering, he had already noticed it, sent me an initial response, then a few minutes later sent me the detailed explanation of what went wrong.
So, in short, it caught him completely off guard and he was responding to the fact that the system was ignoring my onboarding request.
From my perspective, his quick response to identify a problem (before I had even relayed to him the fact that there was a problem) was the quickest and best 'customer service' I've received in a long time.
The first time it went back to subscription mode, it was by code. Happens. However, 4 days ago, he published this post: https://peakd.com/hive-139531/@arcange/about-hbd-price-and-proposals-funding
In it he wrote:
The post was done on the 11th April 2021, meaning there was only 1 day "notice".
Regardless of the notice, he should have known that it was only a matter of days or maybe weeks until his proposal would be funded again. Considering he gets 3000 USD per month from the proposal alone and the proposal was funded for 5 months straight, I doubt his pockets were empty. Frankly speaking, it was an egoistic & silly move from his side to force subscription and break apps because of a few days/weeks "without funding".
Also in regards to costs. Let's say base-costs are 1900$ (I doubt they are really that high, but hey), he could easily cover 8 months with that. Meaning, proposals code have been paused for at least 2 months and he'd be fine.
Those are my 2cents.
Okay, I see your perspective on that.
I very much agree with this statement of having a warning before switching to subscription.
Thank you for sharing with us your joy in being able to use HiveSQL again for free.
This made me won a bet I made. !BEER
I simply wonder why you edited your comment to add then remove this sentence:
I'm curious what was your intention with this one?
I deleted it because I thought it was obvious to refund those who paid for a month, and only got 3 days before it went free again.
