Creating Green and Open Spaces - Why I Love Gardens

Humans need something green in their environment, this is determined by evolution in our genes. If there is no green plant within sight or reach, it has a negative effect on our well-being. It has also been proven that people in hospitals recover faster if they have a room with a view to a park and something naturally green.

What I love most about gardens is being in the free nature under the clear sky and still being at home. Of course, there are many great parks that have their charms as well. But having a own peace of land is something very special for me.

I always love it when gardens are a little mysterious. When they have hidden corners and hidden places. The garden I grew up in as a child was such a garden. Hedges, shrubs, a big lilac where I had my "camp". Wonderful. Since then I have moved very often. In total I have created a new garden for myself 4 times during this period. In the end, about a year ago, I moved back to where I grew up to the place I left 25 years earlier. The garden has changed in the meantime. It's not as secretive anymore, it doesn't have those hidden obscure corners, but it's still the same piece of land and definitely my home earth. That's where I'm going to be very busy the next few years, adapting one area or another a bit to my liking. Haha, it will also take some negotiating skills to convince the family of my ideas.

I love to design spaces. But not only interiors, but also rooms and places outdoors. A few stones, a few plants already creates its own space in the garden room. Preferably unobservable or at least hardly observable, cozy, protected, surrounded by lots of greenery and flowering plants.

Today I would like to show you the first garden that I designed myself back in 2006, thats why the photos are not so great. It was just a small very sloping plot that I had in front of the windows of a basement apartment in Munich.

This is what the little piece of land looked like when I moved in:

I quickly realized at that time that I would love to climb out of the windows and sit out there, as the sun was shining wonderfully there until early afternoon. So I started to dig out the slope piece by piece. The first stones I got from the neighbor as a gift, later I always fetched a few from the hardware store and so piece by piece with a lot of effort this idyllic place was created.

But this effort was worth it and strictly speaking it was no "effort" for me. Yes, a little exhausting, but as always, when you do something you love, it basically goes by itself.

And this is how it looked about 2 weeks later:

Grüne und Freie Räume erschaffen - Warum ich Gärten liebe

Diese Woche fragt @bluefinstudios in der GroVid22 Challenge: Warum liebst Du Gärten?

Der Mensch braucht etwas Grünes in seiner Umgebung, das ist durch die Evolution in unseren Genen so festgelegt. Wenn keine grüne Pflanze in Sicht- oder Reichweite ist, dann wirkt sich das negativ auf unser Wohlbefinden aus. Es ist auch erwiesen, dass Menschen in Krankenhäusern schneller genesen, wenn sie ein Zimmer mit Blick auf einen Park und etwas natürlich Grünes haben.

Was ich an Gärten am meisten liebe ist es, in der freien Natur unter freiem Himmel und dennoch zu Hause zu sein. Natürlich gibt es auch viele tolle Parks, die auch ihre Reize haben. Aber ein eigens Fleckchen Erde, das ist schon etwas ganz besonderes für mich.

Dabei liebe ich es immer, wenn Gärten ein wenig geheimnisvoll sind. Wenn sie versteckte Ecken und uneinsichtige Plätze haben. Der Garten in dem ich als Kind aufwuchs war so ein Garten. Hecken, Sträucher, ein großer Flieder, in dem ich mein „Lager“ hatte. Wundervoll. Seit damals bin ich sehr oft umgezogen. Insgesamt habe ich in dieser Zeit 4 mal aufs Neue einen Garten für mich gestaltet. Um am Ende vor ca einem Jahr wieder dort einzuziehen, wo ich aufgewachsen und 25 Jahre zuvor losgezogen bin. Der Garten hat sich inzwischen verändert. Er ist nicht mehr so geheimnisvoll, er hat nicht mehr diese versteckten uneinsichtigen Ecken, aber es ist dennoch immer noch dasselbe Stück Land und definitiv meine Heimat Erde. Da werde ich die kommenden Jahre sehr beschäftigt sein, den ein oder anderen Bereich ein wenig meinen Vorstellungen anzupassen. Haha, es wird auch ein wenig Verhandlungsgeschick nötig sein, die Familie von meinen Ideen zu überzeugen.

Ich liebe es Räume zu gestalten. Aber eben nicht nur Innenräume, sondern auch Räume und Plätze im Außenbereich. Ein paar Steine, ein paar Pflanzen auf einem Rankgitter und schon entsteht ein eigener Raum im Gartenraum. Am liebsten uneinsichtig oder zumindest kaum einsichtig, gemütlich, geschützt, von viel Grün und blühenden Pflanzen umgeben.

Heute möchte ich euch gerne den ersten Garten zeigen, den ich seinerzeit (2006, darum sind die Fotos leider nicht so gut) selbst gestaltet habe. Es war nur ein kleines sehr schräges Grundstück, dass ich vor den Fenstern einer Souterrain Wohnung in München hatte.

So hat das kleine Stück Land ausgesehen, als ich eingezogen bin:

Schnell wurde mir damals klar, dass ich gerne aus den Fenstern klettern und da draußen sitzen würde, da bis zum frühen Nachmittag wunderbar die Sonne dorthin schien. Also fing ich an, Stück für Stück den Hang abzugraben. Die ersten Steine bekam ich vom Nachbarn geschenkt, später habe ich dann immer ein paar aus dem Baumarkt geholt und so entstand Stück für Stück unter sehr viel Mühe dieses idyllische Plätzchen.

Aber diese Mühe hat sich gelohnt und genau genommen war es auch keine „Mühe“ für mich. Ja, ein wenig anstrengend, aber wie immer, wenn man etwas tut was man liebt, dann geht das im Grunde wie von selbst.

Uns so sah es ca. 2 Wochen später aus:

Now to the seeds, I set up for the #GroVid22 Challenge, 2 Weeks ago. The results are not so good as I expected, but some plants started to grow:
