It is almost that time. Time to start planting flowers in the flower gardens. We have some pots around the outside of the house in various places too. We already have some of the wild flowers coming up that we planted last year. The neighbor's daffodils that border our fence are blooming. Our forget me nots are looking lovely.
Yes, I am ready for some beauty after a long grey winter.
Seeds and Plans
About another week and I plan to plant my cherry tomato seeds. We bought some biodegradable little planters to put them in. That way we can just place them in the ground or pot directly. No transplanting.
I also picked up some strawberry seeds. Plan to plant some of those as well. The biggest challenge will be keeping the chipmunks out. We planted some a couple years ago and they had a feast. Little bastards. Besides the cherry tomatoes, I love fresh strawberries right off the plant. Nothing from the store compares.
Even our rose bushes are starting to bud. I just hope no late frosts come along.
The Lawn Situation
The lawn is going to require some reseeding in some spots. Last year we had a fungus take hold. It killed the grass. Small spots, but enough to make the lawn look a little awkward.
The back lawn is the dogs' playground, so it will have some bare spots regardless. But we have a digger now in our newest dog Lilly. She would dig to China if we let her. Several holes in the backyard need filled.
So we made a trip to Lowes a while back. Bought some seed, some fill dirt, and straw. Next week we can start filling holes. Will have to wait about eight more days to seed the lawn. We had the yard treated just the other day and have to wait about ten days before seeding.
Fish Fertilizer
I want to go fishing soon. Bring home some fish and use them as fertilizer in the flower gardens. The wife said no. Afraid they will stink the place up. Who knows, she may be right. I read where the Native Americans used to do this with their crops and it worked well for fertilizer. But I'm guessing they weren't planting right next to the house.
For Now
Anyway, gonna sit here, wait for the sun to come up, and drink my second cup of coffee. Dream of what the new lawn and flowers will look like after we're done. Getting anxious to start making things look pretty outside before it starts getting too hot. Looking forward to getting outside more and enjoying the sunny days as well.
Spent too much time inside this winter. Time to fix that.

Thanks for reading,
Joe

Awesome, looking forward to seeing some of your colorful results @coinjoe
You know I have my crocus and early Daffodils already out.
I'm started my veggies seeds, Almost 20 C temperature today.
That is great Kerris! I can't wait to see your flowers as well. It is ironic, because now we have a frost warning for this morning.
Yay! I am excited for you. Being outdoors is therapy for most ills.
You could employ your dog to dig some more garden beds in the lawn, he he...
I think the fish fertiliser is a great idea, and it won't smell so much if it's buried under plants, but then who knows who'd dig them up. Planting a banana skin and some egg shells under your tomatoes however, is a super idea and one your dear wife may agree with. Tell her I sympathise - men do come up with some crazy ideas.
Yeah, I am ready for the outdoors. Been spending more time on our patio soaking up some sun. Starting my walks again tomorrow.
Lilly could dig holes big enough to plant a tree in. LOL
The dogs and other critters is what I would be afraid of with the fish. We do eat plenty of bananas and eggs. So peels and shells would be readily available.
She is used to some of my silly ass ideas.
It reminds me of this book I had when I was a kid. I recently read it to my grandson though I edited the bits where he was drowning!
😂
The biodegradable planters for tomatoes are a smart call, no mess and no stress when transplanting. The chipmunk defense plan sounds funnier than it should be, though. I’d love to hear how the fish fertilizer debate goes. Maybe we’ll all be growing flowers with composted trout soon.
Oh, the fish fertilizer debate was already won by the wife.
Wife wins!
LoL the chipmunks are just grabbing a free feed like everyone else XD J gets similarly mad when the chickens get into the vege patches :)
A couple of our dogs were diggers x_x current one buries her bones which is super cute (I'd never seen a dog do the burying side of things before) but we seem to have gotten her out of it. Just make sure they can't unbury the fish?! ^_^; which shouldn't smell if you're burying them right.
Oh, those chipmunks are super cute. I think maybe Im gonna grow them just to watch the little boogers eat them. :)
Digging them up is most likely why I won't try the fish idea. If not the dog, some other critter.
LoL! Well they do look pretty cute XD
Yeh fair. On the bright side if they find the fish they'll at least leave right, we've had problems using fish emulsion or any fertiliser that dogs (or other animals I guess) would find interesting smelling as they can't find what they're looking for so they just keep digging x_x
I can't wait to see those strawberries when they're ready, they're delicious, and I'm sure the garden will look lovely. You seem full of renewed energy!!!😄
If I can keep those darn cute little chipmunks out of them I might have some to show. Spring has brought me some renewed energy. Thanks
That makes me really happy, the sun and the flowers do wonders for your mood!
I hope you manage to have a nice lawn this year .
As for me , during the season I struggle with the grass so much that I would rather plow it all over , but my wife still wants a lawn in the yard . I find it comforting to collect the grass and dry it to make hay with which I then protect the plants from the heat
So far the lawn is looking good minus the few bare spots from the fungus last year.
At least you dot have to mow the grass in winter!
That is a plus I guess.
It’s great that spring is just around the corner and that you’re already getting ready for it. I’d suggest you sort out the lawn and find a way to keep the squirrels at bay.
Thank you. Going to look into what to do about the chipmunks. They are soo small, not sure what we can do at this point.
After a long winter, it really feels good to start planting again. Good luck with your planting and the lawn too.
Thank you. It does feel good. Best wishes for you.
