LUT Garden Report #4

in HiveGardenlast month (edited)

Officially spring is here and it's time to start growing again. I need to get my skates on otherwise I'm going to miss the season this year.

Garlic

I'm very happy with how my garlic are coming along. I planted 12 and only 1 has died, I consider that a success for a first timer. Hopefully the bulbs of the other 11 are growing nice and healthy under the soil.

There's not much more I can do other than wait patiently, and take some nice macro photos of rain droplets.

Wolfberry

My Wolfberry plants are also growing nice and healthy. They're very hardy and I left them growing in the polystyrene boxes over winter. Most of them are starting to look like proper mini shrubs now. I'll be replanting them next month as they are perennial plants and need a proper permanent home to grow in the long run.

Lemon Verbena

The lemon verbena is my favourite plant. Over the winter it lost all its leaves and I thought it had died. Then suddenly one day I noticed some shoots had grown. Yeah! Spring is back and my lemon verbena is still alive! The stems
were very long and I didn't want my plant to grow too tall so I cut a few twigs and grew them in water indoors.

The new shots are very tiny but very leafy compared to what's remaining outdoors. Plus aesthetically, I think they look beautiful. I've planted one stem in soil, I want to see the difference in growth speed. And I will plant the other one in soil later on in case the stem rots in water. Till then, they make a great display at home.

Aloe Vera

In February I repotted my aloe Vera plant. There was a small flower bud that was shorter than all the aloe Vera leaves. Since then it has continued to grow and now it is taller than the rest of the plant. I don't know what it plans to do with itself. It hasn't turned red nor has it flowered. It's playing surprise surprise with me. Ok, I shall wait and see.

The rest of the aloe vera baby plants I repotted from the main plant are still here. Some have died, I think I may have over watered them 😅

Bok choi

And finally my favourite veggie, bok choi. These seedlings are a little over a month old. When I see other people's seedlings they're always very neat and tidy and spaced out nicely. I sprinkled mine in the pot and they've ended up all clustered together. Hopefully they will survive there for a few more weeks before they're ready to be replanted. I hope I will get a nice harvest this year.

Getting my garden in order

Later on this month I'm going to get some raised beds in my garden to grow things properly. There will be an L shaped planter in this corner and a little path in front. I can't wait for that to be completed and plant my bok choi and Wolfberry plants, and loads of other stuff there. I have this vision of a bumper harvest this year. Mother nature please help me!

Till then, see you in my next LUT Garden Report.

Spring is here! 🥰🥰🌱🪻

I tried to get onion sprouts with water method but failed. Maybe I should try again to sprout them directly on soil like red onion.

what type of bok choy you plant? White stem or just general bak choy? I just transferred the baby plants a couple days ago

Hope your plant be healthy and bringing abundance of harvest 🍀

These are white stem bak choy. @sjarvie5 sent me the seeds from America a few years ago, it's been over a month since they've germinated, and they seems to be a little small compared to previous years, I hope they will grow.

Still have lots to learn from all the other gardeners here!

Nice little setup you have. I am hoping to get some tomato plants this year and start a garden. We have wanted a garden for a while, but with the baby on the way, it’s hard to find the time for one. Hopefully we can get the tomato plants soon and finally get our garden going.

You'll better be quick, once the baby arrives it will be all hands on deck, and I'm sure you'll be spending all your time dotting over the little one

Raised beds are really nice. I love the ones that I have had in the past. I am waiting to see if my garlic come back this year or not. We are still a little cold for things to start sprouting yet. Those are some nice looking aloe plants you have!

We've had quite a wet year so far, so much that a lot of people have water logged gardens even worse than mine. I'm hoping the raised beds will be ok for growing as it's impossible to grow anything in the ground her, it's full of clay.

Hope your garlic will grow this year, I hear they're ok with the cold, so you'll be fine!

I was actually taking a stroll outside yesterday and I noticed that is indeed coming back up this year, so I think we might get lucky!

Help her mother nature! 😅 You'll see, she's already listened.

Plus the plants all look beautiful. This outdoor stuff will give you work, lots of it, although if you plan ahead.... (look who's talking, well... 😄 everything takes planning).

Planning? What's that 🤔😄

Just throw the seeds in the soil and hope for the best 😁

It looks a bit soggy outdoors, a lot of rain has fallen....I wonder when you will get a hosepipe ban lol

Mine isn't the worst, some neighbours here have lost all their turf and ended up with a muddy garden. And we're a new build estate here!!

yes thats the problem, my house was a new build, on a former brickworks, they just chuck a couple of inches on top, turf and leave it for us poor buyers to sort out!!!

First two years my back garden was worse than yours, the next year I dug out ( by hand pick and shovel, a wheel barrow and a skip) just under 10 ton, of clay, clag, rubble and old bricks, and back filled with a mix of top soil and gravel. Took me 6 months to do at weekends. It has been perfect ever since !!!

Mind you I was 17 years younger then!!!!

This is such a pretty set up and I could relate to my aloe Vera plants dying from being over watered. I can't wait to see how your garden turns out. And the garlic too!

I find aloe Vera a bit tricky, I don't keep track of when I last watered them, so either they've dried of drought or I watered them too often

How nice and green is your Aloe Vera. It is definitely a bit different type than my one. The buds will open, I suppose soon, I see they already have the shape of the little flowers but are still closed.

This is how the flowers of my plant look like. Many flowers already fell, and I ate a few too 😁

You eat aloe vera flowers? Can you do that? 😮

You're absolutely correct about buds!! I took another close look today, some of the buds are starting to open up. Previously they were all flat and I thought they were another type of leaf!

It seems I can, I am still alive :D

Fabulous garden, dear, @livinguktaiwan

The wood + glass container or I must say an ornament is really beautiful. I just do this in a glass but now I want to have a nice looking one like yours 😊 Happy gardening!

Thanks, I got that from AliExpress. I went through a phase where I was buying lots of rubbish from there, most didn't last very long or were totally useless when they arrived. This was the exception

The surprise surprise ALOE VERA had me cackling. 😂 I’m sure the Bok Choi would get darker and taller. Good job keeping all these guys alive. My mom loves planting lemon grass and strawberries 🍓 sometimes the lack of manure doesn’t allow the plants to grow quickly.
