LUT Garden Report #6

in HiveGarden2 months ago

In my last garden report I mentioned I was getting an some work done to the back corner of my garden. It gets little sun and was turning into a dead zone. Now I've added a gravel path around it and made it usable again. Snowpea loves running around here.

I've placed pots of plants on one side. The rosemary, lavender on the left I just bought this week to start a herb garden. The next two plants were from last year. They haven't died yet, I think I'm not a massive plant killer as I thought I was.

My sister gave me the pansy, on the right. She has loads of stuff in her garden, saving me quite a lot of money to buy plants. Basically I've taken anything she has excess from her garden.

I have planted some nerine in the corner. This is from my other sister, saving me more pennies. Nerine are from South Africa and are like lilies. My sister has had hers for many years and they grow pretty pink flowers in winter adding a nice dash of colour to the garden when everything else is dead.

The leaves were still very floppy two weeks after I planted them, and my sister suggested I cut it back and let it regrow. Hopefully they will 🤞

Next, is more of my herb garden. The mint came from my brother in law's garden. I love growing mint as they're so easy to grow, zero maintenance and helps to keep pests away. Plus I can use them to make drinks and salad, perfect for the summer.

On the other side I have added a mini greenhouse. I mentioned I would get one last week in my procrastination post. Putting it out on the chain really helps. If you have any jobs that you've put off for a long time, you should try writing about it, you'll get it done!

I've only had my mini green house for a few days and I'm already seeing a big difference to my plants.

My brother in law propagated a fig plant and gifted it to me. Since I moved it into the greenhouse the shoots are clearly growing. I'm going to wait for it to grow bigger and stronger before I pot it outside. The left tray on the top right photo is Chinese cabbage. Last month I sowed some seeds outdoors but none germinated. This time I kept the seedlings indoors for a couple of days and when I moved them to the greenhouse they started to germinate the next day!! They're only 5 days old but so far so good. The tray next to it is green salads, they're a week old today and supposedly very easy to grow. They look a little leggy as they sat on my window sill for a couple days before I got the greenhouse. Hopefully they will grow better now. They other tomato plants are also from my sister. She gave me some on last month and I made a mistake of planting them in my raised bed immediately. All but one got eaten by the slugs. I'm going wait for them to grow bigger before I replant them this time.

These are green peppers seedlings, I planted them after I bought a green pepper for dinner a few weeks ago. They were sat outdoors for a few weeks and I was a bit surprised they germinated. Hopefully they will grow better in a warmer environment.

My sister sowed a lot of bok choi seedling about two months ago and gave me two trays. Of course most things die when they get to me. These are considered old and I was going to throw them away, then I thought I'd try to challenge nature and see if they will grow if I resow them and keep them in the greenhouse. I guess we'll find out in my next LUT Garden Report.

Last and not the least, two more plants. The supermarket bought basil is the latest addition to my herb garden. I plan to propogate it in a few weeks time to increase my crop. And finally the cuttings on the right are goji berries from my sister's garden. They've become a super health food in recent years, but the Chinese have been using it as a dried cooking ingredient for years. These will grow into bushes (if they grow), I'll decide where to plant them in the future.

At the moment I have nothing growing in my garden apart from one surviving tomato plant and my wolf berry plants, but the latter seems like it may have some disease. It's such a waste of growing space. Need to find some hardy things to grow that won't be nibbled by slugs. Any suggestions? Thanks and have a great weekend.

Sort:

It is noticeable that you have stopped procrastinating, as you made reference to in a previous post, “I remember”. Now, it's keep it that way and enjoy the summer and the yellow-orange-yellow colours that autumn will soon bring… And waiting for your garden (backyard) to turn snow-white by the end of December (I guess). It all looks wonderful, well done.

Writing about my procrastination has definitely put pressure on me to complete my outstanding tasks. There's still a few more months to enjoy the summer before it turns cold but I don't think it will turn snow white, we don't tend to get that much snow here

Your garden seems very ordered compared to my 'jungle'. I was out there hacking stuff today, but it makes little difference.

I guess you've got a much bigger garden to get a jungle!! Ours, like all new builds now are quite small, but the perfect size for me. I wouldn't be able to handle anything too big, I'll be spending all my time looking after it!

Ours is big and needs more time than I have spare. There are areas that I allow to go a bit wild. It's good for the wildlife.

You have a very nice looking garden. I am sure it will produce some great looking produce and pretty flowers. What a green thumb you have.

Still learning , still learning.

Hopefully next year I will have a better harvest

Great work in the garden. I see you have lots of raised plant beds that you can use for growing many things. Your garden looks very ordentlich and would fit in well here in Germany! 😅

I had this vision of a planter full of crops this year, but I have lots of hungry slugs who eat everything I try to grow, really disheartening 😔

Ah sorry to hear that. Keeping bugs away isn't easy.

The little greenhouse will help with the seeds, they will be doing good! :))

No advice about slugs... maybe to find some herbs that could actually serve as repellant? 🤔

To be fair, there are less slugs now, maybe there's nothing for them to eat 🤨

That is a neat mini greenhouse. Glad it is making a difference too. The basil is looking good. I have bought it at the store looking great and then at home it promptly dies. :(

The last one I bought lasted for a few months, this time I've repotted it hopefully it will last longer. How's your garden going this year? Do you have a lot going on?

Sadly I didn't plant a garden this year. I miss it and will plant in the fall when it cools down.

Oh I've somehow missed your garden update. It's looking gorgeous all freshly landscaped! And how good are those mini greenhouses - I think they call them marthas in America which is wierd.

I guess you're also experiencing a lot of rain which makes for a challenging growing season!

The weather has been pants as you know, low 10s in June, freaking crazy. I was a bit sceptical of these mini greenhouse as they're so amateurish but I saw my brother in law got one and it does the job for him when he grafts his fruit trees.

Do you think maybe it's named after Martha Stewart? She's very big out there..

Your gardening is neat and clean. Mine, still working on it, but wild grass is always wilder ehehe
I think the bok choy seems (still) healthy, but in my opinion, you need to transfer them into a bigger space because they have big roots and do not grow better when any competition close around

If these mature bok choy survive and grow bigger and stronger, I will definitely replant them outside to the planter. I once grew them indoors in 2 litre milk cartons and they grew enormous!! I was so happy, hopefully I can repeat that one day!

Your garden is very clean and organized. Maybe in a few months or a year, all your efforts will be paid just continue taking care of them.

I hope so too. I wasn't expecting too much this year as it's my first year, hopefully it will be more successful next year

One plant to try is definitely garlic imo- I have a patch of it in my yard and if I don't look at it for a month, it's fine. The scrapes off the top of the plant make great salads and stir-fry, and they seem to dissuade certain bugs from wanting to hang about.

I adore how many different herbs you have, I think it is more motivational to cook something special when you have fresh herbs about. Or make cocktails hehe- I love both alcoholic and non-alcoholic mojitos in the summer! Your thriving mint made me crave one 😋

Glad you got the greenhouse set up, and that your sisters are happy to provide some extra plants to you. I think you're doing awesome, and it will just keep getting better!

I planted some garlic bulbs last autumn but I harvested too early this summer, I will know for next year now. I'll definitely be planting them again this year as I have lots of slugs around.

At the moment my garden has very low productivity plus the cold summer this year didn't help either, hopefully I can still grow something in the coming months

Wow! Your garden is so organized and have a lot of plants. That nerine flower looks beautiful and I think we don't have it here in Philippines but it has a similarity but I can't name it hehehe

Well in that small area you will get rid of the slugs in no time-. Just use iron pills for adult ones and maybe some NaOH solution for little ones. And if you want to make sure they won't get into raised beds, use copper tape. They can't get through it.
