Greenhouse Weekly Update - by Sunscape

It has been extremely cold this week and we got hit with another round of snow. Thankfully, it was only 6" that fell and the sun came out the next two days to melt it all away.

I had to run heaters from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 a.m. most of the week. Now that it is supposed to reach 50°F today the sun will keep the greenhouse nice and warm.

I believe I can finally say goodbye to winter weather and welcome spring wholeheartedly.

The flowers are coming along well and I have to pot up the Marigolds today since they are still in small cell trays.

hivegarden-onion.jpg

The potatoes and eggplant are quite happy but the onions are stressing somewhat. I have to cover the cold frame today to warm up the soil enough to plant them this week.

The petunias are growing slower than usual but maybe the new variety I chose this year is the reason. The nasturtium should make a nice edible flower basket for me too.

hivegarden-peppers.jpg

I managed to get some of my peppers into larger pots since they outgrew the cell trays. I still have a few more in the grow room that need to be done too. I grew less this year and still wonder where I'm planting them all.

I potted up all the Roma tomatoes and the cherry types into 4" pots. By the time I plant them out in May, they will be nice and robust.

Here I compare the hydroponic lettuce and spinach side-by-side. The hydroponics are outdoing the tower gardens. However, the lettuce in the water is bolting compared to the tower garden.

Some of the spinach leaves are ready to be picked. I may find some time this afternoon to do so. I still have a lot of transplanting to do today. Then I will be fertilizing and putting the seedlings out into the greenhouse.

Here is the first hydroponic lettuce harvested this spring. This Buttercrunch lettuce is nice and green.

I had to pick a few spinach leaves and add the microgreens I harvested to the salad. It is so nice to have fresh, organic greens for lunch.

Now it is time to get back to transplanting before too much of the day gets by me. ;-) Have a great week my friends.

Until next time, this is Sunscape

Wow, I love all your crops. I hope I can start doing hydroponics also.

It is so easy to do and you may find you enjoy hydroponics @afterglow.

Do you intend to plant all those little starts in your garden, or do you sell some of them?

I actually plant them all in my gardens. I do grow a lot of plants every year.

How do you keep up with the weeding? That's my biggest challenge.

 last month

I actually have very little weeds in the gardens after years of staying on top of them. Whenever I do see one I pull it immediately to make sure it does not go to seed.

Oh, you are so far ahead of me! But I did get my first harvest off the mesclun greens last week. :)) I'm not sure I knew you had a greenhouse... But that could just be brainfog... Have I asked what you use for fertilizer?

Nice! I bet the greens were delicious. I use osmocote time release for my flowers. For the veggies, I use phosphate, bone meal, powdered eggshells, horse manure, leaf compost, fish compost from Maine, fish emulsion, and some I can't think of at the moment. Now, I am having brainfog. lol

Do you mix the veggies amendments to a formula or a soil test? I use many of these also and have a formula for them.

I never test my soil. I just amend it every year with the compost. I add the eggshells for calcium and alfalfa pellets for nitrogen, and if a certain veggie needs extra, like the onions, I add what they need when I plant them. I use the fish emulsion every three weeks or so while they are growing. Everything thrives and this is the way I have done it for years.

Every thing does thrive, your gardens and plants are gorgeous!
