How are you holding up through this lockdown?

in GEMS4 years ago (edited)

COVID-19 numbers have been sky rocketing over the past few weeks in India and i've been quite happy to stay home. It's the safest option even as India comes out of lockdown prematurely.

But, I've kept myself rather busy and focused on trying to build some new skills for the future and potentially try and create a new income stream by end of this crisis situation. Suffice to say it's not been very easy but challenges are not supposed to be easy are they?

But once every 1-2 weeks I've been visiting a couple of my favourite spots on the coastline close to my city during the hours we were allowed to move freely here.

I come to this place quite often. I find it very relaxing to take a walk on the beach especially since not many people are around these days. There's no risk of COVID-19 outdoors on a beach with or without social distancing generally.

With so many bad things happening this year things have been quite stressful for everyone. So this was a good getaway of sorts for me.

Some of friends have lost their jobs, others have taken salary cuts. Some businesses have shut down and incomes have taken a hit for everyone.

In early February, I was trying to help some of my friends land a new job but no one was hiring even back then as our economy had slowed down even before COVID-19 lockdown happened and things have only gotten worse since. Everyone is so worried lately and these are some legit concerns.

But there's not a lot you can do but focus on what you have left and work towards the future. I tell this to my friends: If you have your health intact through this pandemic, you can sort out the rest of your problems one by one. My city isn't very badly hit by the virus so far. So far so good!

I generally focus on solutions because there's no point worrying beyond the bare minimum amount on a situation we don't and can never control. Better not to worry at all sometimes but as humans it can't be helped.

But I really like long walks on empty beaches and this beach is interesting. This is the Arabian Sea off the coast of Mangalore-my hometown. There's a lighthouse nearby and I visit that place on weekdays when no one visits.

It's a beautiful area and now with the monsoon set it, the skies look pretty magnificent with all these amazing clouds. So dramatic!

The weather was just perfect, not very humid but quite cool and windy when I went there. I was hoping it would rain but it didn't. Next time I might take a quick dip if it isn't raining and especially if the water stays a bit calm. I miss going for a swim.

I went to other nearby spots on the weekend and it was packed with locals but this and a few other spots I know aren't jam packed and perfect if you want to just chill by yourself.

This is a breached dredging ship Bhagvati Prem off our coast. Last year's monsoon was pretty rough for it. The monsoon tides were strong enough to flip the direction of the ship from facing North when it breached to South-its current position.

It was supposed to have been removed by January, 2020 but it remains here as nothing gets done on time in India. It's been a major concern for the local fishermen as it cuts through the line they use to reach the coast where they park their small motorised boats.

I really like the following picture of the ship. Suffice to say I had a good time walking around for an hour or so. I also called some old friends from my school to check on them and if they are doing okay and had a good time catching up as well.

I love these short drives around my city in my old Ford Fiesta 1.6S. It's aged quite well for a car that's going to turn 11 this August but it's so much fun to drive that I always look forward to the next one.

I've been reading a few blogs every day on Hive catching up on what many people are doing. But I know this is a difficult time and I can only hope that you are doing well through these hard times. There's not a lot I can do to help your situation but I hope you have your own ways to stay calm and relaxed through these difficult times.

In a densely populated country like mine, social distancing in the city is hard to come by especially when you are off your personal vehicle and shopping for essentials.

So, I thoroughly enjoy these little moments away from the crowd and also away from the four walls of my home where I spend most of my time working away at my desk.

Sort:

I enjoyed seeing these pictures from your corner of the world! The beach looks like a very peaceful spot to think and decompress.

The past few weeks have been interesting here. We had almost 80 straight days of quarantine. Just as most things were set to gradually reopen here in Minnesota the protests and riots began. It's been a very intense week. Not everyone at these protest rallies are practicing social distancing so I expect the rate of new infection to spike within the next 5-10 days. In this state the elderly have been hit the hardest. I think upwards of 80% of the deaths have been those in long term care facilities. What a year this has been. I hope @roelandp has an epic HiveFest event in the works so we can all blow off some steam later in the year!

Thank you Eric! I've been following up on everything that's been going on and it's quite stressful to observe too. I'm expecting the infection rate to spike further in India as well and find ourselves in the top 5. Our recovery rates are fudged due to the new discharge policy so I don't expect any major positive news in the near future.

HiveFest would be great but i'm not so certain travel would be safe or easy for the foreseeable furture. I don't feel confident enough to travel right now personally speaking. I'm sure for people living in low hit areas, it would be easier to travel. But without a vaccine wave 2 of the virus is highly probable in countries where recoveries have been high once borders open and free movement is allowed once again.

That's a good point about the travel-situation. It might be best to plan for 2021 instead. We had trips planned for Ireland and Toronto this year and it looks like we'll have to cancel both of them.

The best solution is to stay at home - as much as we can. We are now open for community spread, and there is no way it can be prevented.

I too have a 11 year car - yours look quite well maintained, there is a lot of feelings in the car, it being with us for so many years and driving us without any issue - I consider it as Lucky for that reason.

Thanks :)
I enjoy driving so I head atleast once a week. Rest of the time I keep myself busy and don't realise how time flies.

Simply awesome...you are having one of the best time amid lockdown and covid19. Infact it is the time that many using it in best possible way , some learning, and some multiplying the skills.
I am still occupied mostly in taking care of my Dad and in between keep engaging and making post for Hive....good to see you after long time...and totally a differently scenic beauty.

Yepp, hive has kept me pretty busy during this lockdown period, otherwise it would be quite difficult for me to spend so much time at my home.

Thanks dude. I'm always around but mostly just reading and voting towards end of the day. Glad to read your comment and hope you are doing fine through this time.

It's good that you are staying near the coast so that of you are bored you can actually visit there. Being in Bangalore, I have not gone out in last 3 months or so. Only for usual shopping and nothing else.

What are skills you are learning?

Most probably coding I think.

Those are great pictures and I feel so jealous of all those who are closer to sea 😉 I see the blue car too, its perfect to watch the tides and spend our early mornings and evenings on a beach.

I'm locked up in Bangalore and haven't visited my native even after the ease of lockdown.
I haven't been much productive except in kitchen and few photo walks in community. People here are not afraid as it was the case earlier. No mask is a fashion for few 🤷‍♂️

I have seen people wearing masks out here, might be its different there.

Yup on main roads where they can encounter police is 100%, but a little away from the main roads, nearly 5 of 10 are without masks. Is it the confidence that they are immune or its stupidity 😁

Pure Stupidity is for sure

Makes sense if you are out running or cycling or doing some intense cardio workout but otherwise its stupid not to wear a mask. Even if you are working out the risk of spreading the infection if you are an asymptomatic carrier remains. Tricky situation. But few people just don't want to wear one even if they aren't engaging in aforementioned activities. Seen this in my city too, even in supermarkets early into lockdown! Now they don't allow people without masks in most places.

Yeah, early mornings or evenings are great by the beach especially now since the weather is a bit cooler.

That's great. Images are beautiful. Nice to see that you are enjoying the time you have during the lockdown. I also hope sea was little bit near my place. I also live in a city that has coastal areas but I couldn't go out anywhere with the new increase in numbers day by day. As the government has also relaxed the situation a little bit, some places are also crowded. Happy to know that you are working on a new income stream as well. That's one good thing to do during the lockdown. Nice to hear from you. 😀

Thanks man. Great to see your comment. I feel safe by the beach and we have some nice spots so its been fine. I hope my city doesn't see a rise in infections because then it would be great to hang out with some friends too.

That's great stay safe and enjoy. 👍

There is nothing much we can do to eradicate this pandemic. For the time being, let's live our lives as we want and do work hard towards achieving new skillsets needed to sustain the post corona era.

Two days back I came back to Kerala. Now we are in home quarantine.

Hope to see you back after a long gap.

Yeah that's all we can do. Glad to know you are doing fine and I hope the quarantine goes smoothly!

Nice to know you are doing well...

The weather looks really great....far good than here in north, where temperature goes to around 40'C in the day.

I used to travel 1-2 times a year to south...mostly Bangalore to spend the summer but this time I am stuck at my home.

BTW, I hope you come back and post actively on hive....I used to enjoy your blog posts quite a lot.

Thanks man! I hope to blog more often as possible. :)

I miss my days in the North where in the summer time i used to travel to Himachal and Uttaranchal a lot. But otherwise my current location is pretty cool all things considered.

Yepp, your current location is pretty cool.

Its a tough world we live in. Within a blink of an eye, jobs are lost, families facing hard times, the fear of the pandemic carries a lot of weight. Relaxing by the sea side, is surely a good way to ease the tension. Finding a skillset to keep one busy, will surely come in handy.

Yeah, we can only try to keep ourselves sane somehow through these times.
