Monday Drumday: Swinging it

Yesterday I had an informal recording sessions with some friends including @daniellemurray and @purplesinger. We got together to record some jazz tunes and other songs. I did some singing and guitar, but also took along my little Yamaha drums. Some of the tunes really need a swing rhythm, so I need to practice that.

Earlier this evening I was working on some heavy rock for a Drumeo collaboration, so this is a bit different. Drumeo had an appropriate backing track I could use. It sounds a bit like early Miles Davis.

I just played the basic rhythm with some variations of how I played the drum and cymbals. Jazz soloing is another level.

I hope to see more drummers on Hive soon, but I will keep doing these #drumday videos to motivate myself.

I am trying to upload this again as 3speak reporting a rendering issue. Unfortunately it does not give you the original text you typed in, so I had to do that again.

Rock on, man!

I think Jazz drumming creates it's own type of problem. Keeping the swing rhythm on the ride or hat distracts me from the rest of the kit.

I think it is partly a matter of teaching the body to do these things so you don't have to think about it too much. I find it tricky to switch between different patterns or do fills. At least I managed to not drop the sticks when flipping one around :)

Hey @purplesinger, here is a little bit of BEER from @steevc for you. Enjoy it!

Jazz music is special though I only heard some songs in this genre, the music you are playing reminds me of Mafia, I used to play a video game that sent you back to those years when people mostly listened to Jazz music. and well, nice job on the drums man, I know that it is a hard instrument to play and you are doing it really good :) I enjoyed.

Cheers. I have played swing guitar, but I'm not one of those who knows a million different chords. Maybe I've got a feel for those rhythms now. Drumming is good fun, but challenging. I'm trying to do a video of that each week.

It's cool and interesting :)

Every time I think of jazz drumming I think about the movie "that thing you do". It was so good and the main character was pretty cool. Oh Tom Hanks too... It gives I am Spartacus a whole new meaning!

I've not seen that one. I think Whiplash has given a different perspective on jazz drumming, but it may not reflect what music school is really like.

Oh yikes, wow. I haven't seen that!

Swing 42 is history then, long live Swing 43? 😉
Hope, you had a nice time.

We can still reform the band some time. It was fun and a good way to improve my drumming.

Love the tunes we do, although we haven't had much chance to add more.. I'd be curious to hear what you covered and looking forward to the recordings.

You need to tune into the next @radioliquorice :)

I will most likely have to listen on the go, but doubt I'll be able to chat a lot.
But I will send some songs, I wouldn't want to miss it.

Omg amazing. I liked the jazz tunes. You're talented indeed.

I really enjoy this video. You are doing your job very wonderfully.

You look more relaxed now or maybe it was just the relaxed track!

I'm getting more into it now. Got to keep working on it.

Oh yes, you can't let it slide or it all goes out the window
