Hello Learners,
Think of a time when you felt so overwhelmed by something that you wanted to run away from it. Maybe you were faced with an immense amount of homework, or an idea for a business that terrified you. Maybe you were about to move in with someone new, and the thought of starting a new relationship scared the hell out of you. Whatever the case may be, when we are faced with something too much, our minds naturally retreat and take things slow. Sometime step back is good. Think of it as an opportunity to catch your breath and reset before moving forward again. If we don’t give ourselves this chance, we risk getting so wrapped up in whatever it is that we will lose sight on what really matters most.
Talk to people who’ve been there
If you’re going through a difficult time, it’s important to surround yourself with people who have been there as well. Talk to your friends about what you’re going through, and if you have a relative or close friend who has also gone through something similar, talk to them as well. This way, you’ll be able to get a better sense of how you can make it through this difficult time. Talking to other people who have been in a similar situation will help you gain perspective, and give you new ideas on how to get through it. Plus, talking to other people will help you realize how normal and common the feelings you’re experiencing are. It’s very important to talk to other people, because it will help you feel less isolated and alone.
Turn off the noise
One way to step back and gain perspective is to turn off the noise in your head. Even though it feels like there’s a lot of noise around you, when you’re going through something difficult, the noise of the world feels very loud. But when you turn off the noise, you can hear things again more clearly. You’ll notice that there are a lot of things in the world that don’t actually matter, and you’ll notice that a lot of things that did matter before, don’t matter anymore. Turn off the noise, and you’ll be able to see these things again for what they really are. You’ll notice that a lot of things you used to care about before, don’t really matter anymore. When we turn off the noise in our heads, we’re able to get a fresh perspective on things. We’re able to see things again more clearly, and notice what really matters.
Reflect
Another way to step back and gain perspective is to reflect. Whenever we’re faced with something difficult, we’re often too caught up in the moment to really take a step back and look at it in a more objective way. If you find yourself getting too caught up in your emotions and other people’s actions, there’s a good chance you’re not seeing things as objectively as you should be. Asking yourself questions, like why am I so upset, or why do I care so much about this, can help you take a step back and gain new perspectives on the situation. It can also help you gain perspective on the way you’re feeling, so you’re not caught up in the emotions, but able to see them clearly.
Take a break
Sometimes when we’re going through something difficult, and we feel like we need a break from it. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to just break away from the situation, but rather, break away from the situation and re-evaluate it from a different perspective. Sometimes when we’re caught up in a situation, we don’t realize how much of a toll it’s taking on us. Take a break from the situation, and take a break from thinking about it. It may help you to re-evaluate things from a new perspective, so that you can return to the situation, with a fresh mind and better perspective
Move forward with your goal in mind
One of the best ways to step back and gain perspective is to remember why you want to reach your goal in the first place. It may be because you want to get into a certain school or get a job, but if that’s not what’s motivating you, what is it? Asking yourself, why do I want this, can help you get a better perspective on your goal. It can also help you realize that you can get through whatever it is that you’re facing, if you really want it. Remind yourself how important your goal is, and remind yourself why you want to achieve it. It’s easy to get caught up in the emotions of the goal, and forget why we want to achieve it in the first place. Reminding yourself of the reason why we want to achieve our goal, can help us see things in a new and better perspective.
