Kotor

in Wednesday Walk3 months ago

I had the pleasure of hiking to the old fortress ruins above Kotor in Montenegro recently. It's a marvelous but somewhat difficult hike that takes you above the walled city, rewarding you with ancient ruins and panoramic views over the historical city and bay.

There are two entry points along the uphill side of the ancient city. I knew to expect an entry fee, and brought extra cash in case I wanted a snack afterwards. Glad I did. The advertised eight euros had bee nupped to fifteen, almost double! I tried talking to the gatekeeper about it, and even showed him the information I'd been given back in the city. No luck. Others simply paid the difference and walked past me. While I was certain he was pocketing the profit, I paid as well.
(footnote: When I exited, the incoming people were being charged 20 euro. I did not have time to complain at the tourism office.)

The springtime flowers along the way were spectacular, as seen by these poppies. This put a spring in my step as I ascended the two kilometer trail that rose 220 meters.

About half way up are the ruins of Out Lady of Remedy Church. IT makes for a nice resting point and social gathering spot. After getting in some sips of water and chatting with fellow trailies, it was time to complete the climb.

The trail is a combination of steps and rocks. People heading up were generally walking on the rocks, while those coming down used hte steps, but there were variations. The most important choice was giving hilers hte surface they felt most comfortable with, and in the cases where both wanted the same thing, simply stepping aside and letting the other pass.

As we neared, a good view of the fortress ruins emerged. I envisioned hundreds of soldiers in heavy armor moving up and down these access ways.Phew!

The view from the fortress was spectacular! We could see well out into the inlet. It was easy to see how this location and its fortifications made it difficult to overthrow. Behind it, the mountain passes are a tenuous climb.

I began making my way back down to the old walled city that is easily denoted by the red roofs. I knew exactly which gelato shop I would find upon my return, a reward for my accomplishment. In the meantime, down the stony, rocky path I went, encouraging those heading upward.

I visited motor last year for my honeymoon I loved this place, so full of cats and the fortress it's nice also if it's not so well maintained.

Cool! The cat population throughout the northeast Mediterranean was massive. Chec kout the documentary Cats of Malta.

a fantastic vista, and by the looks of it a substantial step up the hill!

thanks for the pics

I love the view already.
it's so full of nature. Kotor, is that name of the place? Almost sounding like my friends name "kator" if not for the difference of "o" 😂

I love the whole view; amazing and inviting 😍. It's a very cool environment.
From 8 to 15 euros and then 20??? You are quite lucky to have gone earlier else you would have paid higher entry fee.

#Dreemerforlife.

This is truly a beautiful place. It feels like walking through history in a place where you are embraced by natural beauty

I would love to return to hike higher into the mountainous regions.
