Wednesday Walk Challenge : Carré Saint-Louis, Montreal

in Wednesday Walk17 days ago

For this Wednesday Walk Challenge organised by @tattoodjay, I'm taking you on a little walk in the Square Saint-Louis in the heart of Montreal's Plateau Mont Royal district. It's been a rather sad autumn with leafless trees and rain, but fortunately the houses surrounding the park are colourful and full of architectural surprises. Worth a visit any time of year.

The Square Saint-Louis was originally a water reservoir before being transformed into a park in 1876. It is named after the two Saint-Louis brothers, who were very active entrepreneurs in the area at the time. The park and its surroundings have played host to many artists, including the poet Emile Nelligan and the writer Dany Laferrière...

The colourful town houses are the real attraction of the park. They often feature on postcards, and are truly magnificent with their distinctive architecture. There are plenty of architectural details to admire, as these photos taken a few years ago show:

If you follow my posts, you know I'm a big fan of StreetArt so I couldn't resist showing you a close-up of the mural done by Le Monstr on the edge of the park in 2018.

In summer, the fountain with its pool in the centre of the park allows locals to enjoy its coolness in the shade of tall trees. But in late November and early December, people are more likely to be in the nearby cafés to warm up 😀.

The other attraction, especially for tourists, is the many squirrels in this park. One went by quickly when I was taking a photo of the fountain 🔼. They're very bold as lots of people feed them and don't hesitate to beg for a piece of your sandwich.

Really sad with this puddle, no one hanging out in the park. Can't wait for winter with its white coat like in this photo taken last year.

Near Prince Arthur street, there is a small kiosk that serves coffee and pastries in summer. There're often small concerts. Next door is a bust of the Montreal poet Emile Nelligan, a rather tormented soul who spent most of his life in a psychiatric asylum.

Despite my blurry photo of this bust, I hope you enjoyed this walk through the Square Saint-Louis, a must-see for tourists, especially in summer. Happy Wednesday Walk Challenge... I'm hoping to take part in the #WinterChallenge very soon with the first snow to fall on Montreal since last night.

Looks like a lovely park. I love the colorful houses. That mural by Le Monstr looks really chill. Must be a nice vibe in the summer.

Hard to keep those fast moving squirrels in focus and the fast moving statues 😜

I can't remember who was faster between the squirrel and the statue 😅
Have a great weekend

Yes, always better with a white coat. When I woke up this morning there was a good 5 cm of snow, so winter is really starting. Cool 😀 We'll see if I'm still saying that in March...

That’s awesome… finally some snow ❄️ enjoy it.
I know what you mean. Let’s make the best out of the winter hahaha !LOL

I tried to starte a professional hide and seek team but it didn't work out.
