Ask Anime Question of the Week:

What's the most overused character archetype?

By archetype, that sort of character template + quirk formula that you think get's overused. Genius type, the coward, the brave, the fool but strong type, and the melancholic. There's a lot of character archetypes out there that's been overused so which ones do you think ranks at the top?

In my opinion, Char Aznable is the ultimate archetype in anime. Almost every Gundam series has a Char clone, and some even have the same vibe as him. The blonde hair is so common sometimes in other series they make his other clones have white hair maybe trying to make a little difference from the original hahaha And of course, the storyline usually ends with him getting defeated. well... he is a villain after all so it's bound to happen.

i even wondered before why it’s always a guy and not a woman. But then I stopped complaining when they finally gave us a female version 2022 Gundam series, The Witch from Mercury.

Mmm, I'd love to see a female version of Chara. :D

Seriously, even though I love the Gundam vigilante, I agree with you. We see it too often in the same or almost the same form. Due to this, among others I had a hard time watching Gundam Unicron. And by the way, even in the latest Code Geass there is a character that looks like Char... I must admit, I was pissed :<!

right?

we do have a girl version, in gundam witch from mercury, girl protagonist too I also hope it adds more, like a blonde girl the next hahaha

and yes! in roze the father of lelouch the vessel totally look like char after taking off that mask hahahaa we can never get pass a char character in mecha, always a signature hahaha

Ah, the new one :D. I haven't had the pleasure of watching this series yet. I meant the figure visible on the left.

Yes, it seems that the Japanese like this element too much in mysterious characters. It doesn't bother me, I like watching them myself :).

Yes that's him 🤣 sorry i spoiled you a bit, you'll know what im talking about when you reach ep.12 of this anime hahaja

Easy :D. It's cool, the first episode showed that it will be at most an entertaining anime, like some Dragon Ball or Star Wars :D.

The mask thing is real. That's a long list of Char characters and the last one became Charing.

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I laughed at charing like yess!! HAHAHAAHHAH i also hope more charing will come not just only oneee 😆

Old pervert masters!

Especially nowadays. If today gags with Roshi, Bulma and Goku from DB were shown, there would be a squeal of feminists and leftists all over the world XD.

Absolutely! Also Kakashi and Jiraiya!

Especially Ji-man. Kakashi to chad, so girls would forgive him his lack of manners, haha.

Yes, absolutely.

Omg you're so right! It's everywhere and it's so creepy 😅

As for character development is the 'drunk girl' type. The Misako from evangelion enjoying her beer after a hot shower was a staple of the series, but then replicated over and over so many different anime shows.

Honestly Japanese people sometimes have cartoonish reactions but those are some that I've never seen. Not in Doramas or with real people. I also don't get the appeal of such reaction. I think long ago there was a campaign about that first taste of beer from a can and how amazing it felt that first sip.

I guess that's where the inspiration comes from having that long 'aaaaah' of enjoyment.

I got acquainted with the Misako archetype after my mobile game got a collab with evangelion, the skits were probably based on how live JP comedy works. If it still works, why fix what isn't broken? Western audience were probably not the first considered when mangakas wrote the script.

I think it's the chosen one thingy—like there are a lot of other characters who could potentially beat up the antagonist, but because he's the chosen one, the mc—he'll train hard, and then from being weak, he'll soon become strong with the help of a cool yet weird sensei who mostly has weird fetishes or secret kinks (ahahaha, I've been reading and watching stuff like this for years lol). These chosen one and cool+weird sensei archetypes were something that I've encountered in almost all (or was it all?) shonen anime that I've watched, so I guess it's really overused—but who would care for that if the plot's good?

Not sure if it's also an archetype applied to character, but most of the situation applied to story. But the whole reincarnation origin is such a fractal of the anime genre, specially with a bus running over the main character to send it to another world.

It's such a cliche out there. I hope this gets changed even as a joke.

But bus-kun has to go.

Bus-kun? thought it was truck-kun.

Not bus-kun xD but yeah, this is so overused even outside anime

The one who appears to be tough and everyone is afraid of him or does not approach him and keeps away from the rest, but one day he meets someone who changes him and makes him magically sociable and surrounded by friends and love (who would not want to live something like that haha 😂)

I think he would be catalogued as the antisocial one.

So Tsundere?

I didn't remember the term, but yeah 😂

That reminded me of Kenpachi from Bleach 😂

The main character who uses the "talk no jutsu" type.... And no, it's not just Naruto who does... Hahahaha xDD

One that comes to mind is the archetype of the overpowered protagonist. This character, while exciting at first, becomes predictable. It wasn't seen much before, and on few occasions this premise was great, as happened with Saitama, but then, many series just adapted it without giving it an interesting background, they just do it for the sake of it.

I think that in romance animes the most used archetype that becomes very generic and boring at the beginning is the shy and lonely character, there are many if not practically all romance animes, especially school animes where the main character is the typical student isolated from the group, afraid to talk especially with his love interest, that character that if he is missing no one will notice.

I agree, that's why I don't usually watch romance. It's the same story over and over again

Crunchyroll has prepared me for this post so well!

The general romance Anime's where the main character who is the male love interest, is just a shy, nerdy and loner type.
I can list way too many just from my Crunchyroll watches. It is a sad over use that could really do with an update for sure.

My current example will be DON'T TOY WITH ME, MISS NAGATORO.

This romantic chemistry works so it's going to stick around for several other shows in the future. If the older audience had gotten used to it, remember that there's a new gen of teens enjoying the medium and finding joy in it.

Bleugh
It needs some changes to keep it fresh for us oldies over here!

A sad and polite girl who is usually quite calm, but her body has some strongly sexual element. Although it hasn't bothered me for a long time, it was the element that irritated me the most for a long time. At the time I thought it was because she was a calm character, but after a discussion with my friends I realized that only this one heroine archetype irritated me and other characters of this type were less irritating. Why does he piss me off? Because 95% of what she says is repeating the protagonist's name. Because she has absolutely nothing in common with the protagonist, and in the end they are married. Because she does it so clumsily that almost every time the main character is surprised that this is what she meant. And usually it doesn't contribute anything to the story, at most it serves as a MC Guffin (an item that everyone runs after because it has an important meaning).

Like Hinata (Naruto) or Orihime (Bleach).
