I have always been a lover of African Tofu popularly known as Awara in the northern parts of Nigeria. Since I was a kid, anytime I come in contact with money I would always spend it all on it regardless of the amount. This dragged on for years until one terrible event put a permanent stop to my obsession.
It was the first Sunday of July and I was still barely 10 years old. Right after church, Uncle Josh came to visit the family with gifts and congratulate his elder brother who just got a promotion at work. Uncle Josh is an easy going person and anytime he visits he always gives me money right before he leaves. He did the same thing that very day giving me two clean two thousand naira notes. I was super excited about the money because I knew it was going straight to Tofu. I thanked him for the money before dashing to the main road to get some before my mother would take them from me.
When I got to the road side, I used up all the money for awara, ate it all up, cleaned my mouth and rushed back home before anyone noticed. When I was asked if I got any money from my uncle I denied saying that he only gave me sweets and biscuits. That night was hell on earth for me, I could barely sleep due to the severe case of diarrhea. I opened up to my mom and she laughed at me saying I got what I deserved for lying
That was the last time I ate African Tofu aka Awara
