In hindsight

Once upon a time
On a bright and sunny day in my early twenties
When most of the trees came into bud
And children were playing hopscotch in the street
And wearing a sweater was just warm enough
When the birds were chirping for joy
There was a thought arising in my mind
Like a bubble rises slowly to the surface of thick oil or a muddy pond
I thought
Beyond doubt
Now I have hit rock bottom
Violently
With full force
And with my face towards the ground
So here I am
Lying in my puddle of blood
Dirt in my mouth
Everything's numb
Only my tongue is searching for my teeth
Now I'm gonna close my eyes for good
And let the angels and the demons fight over the shards of my soul

In hindsight
I have to smile to myself
How naive I was
To think that it couldn't get any worse
