The first thing that came to my mind when I saw the image was the crusades and a contingent of soldiers who have been left behind on their journey to the battlefield, which is why I wrote this story.

The scorching sun fell relentlessly on the battlefield. Sir Gael watches mournfully as his men fall one by one under the sharp scimitar of the infidels.
The Last Crusade has become a desperate struggle for survival.
Lagging behind the bulk of the Christian forces, his small army faces an enemy vastly outnumbered.
Sir Gael grips the hilt of his sword tightly, determined not to give up.
-For the glory of God! -he exulted, urging on his rallied soldiers. Fight to the last breath!
The ranks close around the knight. A sea of turbans and scimitars surrounds them.
Sir Gael raises a prayer and charges his men in a last desperate counter-attack.
The battle is bloody and fierce. With each onslaught, more crusaders are struck down.
But Sir Gael is a formidable warrior, and his sword points the way forward.
When blood soaks through his chain mail, only he and a handful of brave men are left standing.
The enemy, decimated, beat a retreat. Sir Gael had achieved the unimaginable: victory in the face of certain defeat.
Although a straggler, his courage and unshakeable faith enabled him to reach the lines of the Christian forces days later.
His legend would be etched in the annals of the Crusades.
Now this is interesting ... since the Crusades went on for more than a century, and covered vast tracts of the world, it is possible a contingency could have grown old being cut off from the main force, assuming something like a severe winter and them getting lost. Interesting! I like it!
In this case they are already the last crusades.
Indeed ... and they make it, in the end. A fine story!
I wonder about the king is he trying to escape leaving his men and the people behind?
