This is my post for #freewriters 2592 prompt trick him hosted by @mariannewest.
Rudy has to be the most spoiled wild rabbit. He knows what he likes and doesn't like, and he is not afraid to tell me when he does not like something or if he likes one thing better than the other.
Not long after I made this box his house he chewed a little window in the bottom corner that faces in the direction where he can see us.
Every afternoon I clean his cage, he hears me and sticks his nose out of the hole he made, and waits for me to put his food in the cage.
Wait that is not what he wants, he wants me to give him a carrot, it will hold him over until it is time to come out of his house for the night. Rudy will yank the carrot out of my hand with the power of one of those bank machines that sucks the tube with your money in it and go back in his house with it.
One day I thought I would trick him and give him a piece of celery instead of a carrot. He got mad, real mad. His house started bouncing up and down and he came running out his door and boxed my hand with his two front feet. He reminded me of a kangaroo boxing, bam bam bam and it was over and he was back in his house. I traded the celery for a carrot and all was well in Rudy World.
I have two plastic jar lids in his cage, I use them to put pieces of apple or other snacks for him. I only give him 2 slices of apple in the morning. I give it to him while I am making my coffee. If I forget and I sit back down to drink my coffee he will take one of the plastic lids and make them bang on the floor of his cage. He does this until I give him his apple. When I give him the apple he makes some sort of noise, it is a weird noise that I can not explain the sound, between a purr and a rumble. I never knew rabbits could make sounds...
My Son did not get out of jail, they dropped the drug charges but he had a failure to appear charge from back in August, he got caught picking palmetto berries on State land and did not go to court. The judge gave him 90 days with 26 days already served, he has 64 more to go. I hope he can do some heavy thinking about his life while he is in there.

Rudy is quite a character! I remember the day you brought him inside. You bottle fed him intuitively, but didn't expect him to survive. Now look at him! A full fledged house rabbit! I love your stories about Rudy.
Your son harvested palmetto berries? Is that even a crime?
You brought back memories of me caring for him and how I thought he would not make it. He has turned out to be quite the little character.
As for the berries, you are not allowed to pick them on state owned land, even if "We The People" are supposed to be the owners of the land. It is not ok for us to pick them but they can go in with a mulching machine and grind the entire palmetto plant down to the ground.
I saw a bunch of dollar weed on the preserve by my house and I wanted to pick some of it for Rudy but my husband said I would get arrested for it. I said why? it is a weed, he said you can not pick anything from state or county land.
That's just nuts!
yes it is, Fl is known for being nuts!!!!
I had to look up palmetto berries, and I still don't understand why it's now a felony to harvest them.
Because he was on state or county owned land and they do not allow anything to be taken from it. They say the animals eat them. But they can grind the palmetto plants down to the ground to get rid of them.
I love your Rudy stories. He is quite the entertaining pet. Sorry your son didn't get out of jail. Hope he gets his life in order.
Thank you. Yes, I hope this will make him take a good look at his life.
Sorry to hear about the news!! I hope that in this extra time he will decide to reform his life!
It's nice to know about all the Rudy's Dramas!
I hope he can get his life together, too. He is 44 years old, it is past time for him to grow up and take care of himself.
