Another Room with a View
I love a room with a view, especially one that is dynamic, peaceful, and soothing to the eyes. This view below was the view from my rental condo at Cancun for the Easter week. I was travelling a lot for work, so decided to travel a bit more. Kids had school during that week, till Thursday, but my wife suggested I go and stay there from Sunday, and she would join me with the kids after school on Thursday. Cancun is a short 1-hour-45-minute flight from Houston, and there are upward of 20 flights there everyday. Therefore, it is easy to hop on an evening flight after school/work and arrive there by 8 or 9pm. We have done this many times in the past, so I said THANK YOU! :)
I got to spend four days by myself with this view of Yamil Lu'um, all by myself with nothing to do! Most excellent!
I used the time wisely, I think. I did some office work, and then did a couple of YouTube interviews related to Splinterlands discussing the game, which was great fun.
For those who do not know, Yamil Lu’um, also known as the Temple of the Scorpion (Templo del Alacrán), is a small Mayan archaeological site located in the Hotel Zone of Cancún, Mexico, situated between the Park Royal and Westin Lagunamar hotels. Perched on the highest natural point along Cancún’s coast, it overlooks the Caribbean Sea.
Constructed during the Late Postclassic period (1200–1550 AD), Yamil Lu’um was part of the Mayan civilization’s coastal network, possibly linked to trade or maritime activities. Discovered in 1842 by John Lloyd Stephens, the site was excavated starting in the 1980s. One temple features a scorpion sculpture remnant, giving it its nickname, while the other has a handprint in the stucco (Templo de la Huella), though these are no longer visible. Its strategic location suggests it served practical purposes like guiding vessels or signaling, rather than being a major ceremonial center. The ruins, though small and weathered, reflect the Mayans’ architectural ingenuity and connection to the sea. Modern development in the Hotel Zone may have impacted a larger original site. I am in fact surprised that the site actually survived all the construction of the hotel zone in Cancun. I would have thought they’d have bulldozed it to make room for another infinity swimming pool!
However, by some miracle it survived and looks spectacular almost any time of the day, especially during sunset, my favorite time of the day. I like Cancun after dark. There is a vibrant nightlife here, which I feel a bit old to participate. However, there are couple of nice Piano Bars and a Jazz club, which I enjoy. Especially, during the middle of the week, you go early, you can listen to Piano man, by Billy Joel while making love to your Tonic and Gin!
There is this place here, where you can feel this song is made for! Nah, I am not telling you the place of the bar :) There are always a lot of people in Cancun, especially bartenders, who:
But there's some place that he'd rather be

To forget about life for a while
I try not to do late night while at Cancun. I enjoy a good night’s sleep, and a long walk along the shoreline all the way until the sun is directly overhead. After which a quick dip or two, and a good lunch. I mostly like to stay inside during the afternoon, as it gets rather hot there midday. This was usually a great time to catch up on hive stuff. I did this day in and day out for four days, and then had a lot of fun with the family over the weekend!
With those views, you can forget about life forever; it's impossible to start the day badly with those views. That's life!
The waters of the Caribbean have something different—the colors, the vibe, the atmosphere
You are literally on the other side of this ocean!
I don’t know much about the beaches of Cuba, do you get similar color? Do you guys have property development at beach front? The images I saw mostly from movies and documentaries around Havana, the water color is not like this.
I was reading you and thinking the same, actually on the other side of the ocean, very close.
The beaches in Havana are somewhat separated from the city; it’s not like Cancun. Still, if we maintain the same color, Varadero and the beaches in the northern cays are even better. The tourist infrastructure is quite good (considering the situation in the country) but still far behind Cancun. If you go more local, there’s still a lot to develop; honestly, when you have Cancun, Cuba falls quite behind, that’s the truth, even though I love my country and its beaches
This is beautiful. A moderate development is probably better. I want to visit Cuba someday! No idea if I am allowed to!
With Trump in charge, it’s better not to even try :( but hopefully one day you can. A ride in an almendrón (a classic car) along the Malecón is a great family plan ;)
I sure hope I will outlive Trump and his dictatorship!
Wow, that looks beautiful. My inlaws are in Mexico right now. I think they are in Cabo though. Great song you picked! I get to see Billy Joel in concert this November. I am super excited about it!
Never heard Billy Joel live! That will be exciting!
We are looking forward to it! It was supposed to happen last month, but the moved it because he is having surgery.
That art piece seems huge. I wonder how long did it took to make it.
By the way talking about art these are my first pieces with 3D figures. Do you think that they are more or less juvenile than my other digital works?
Art piece is the centerpiece for attracting the people to that bar, that is why I included the people in front to give a perspective.
Here is another one, on another wall.
That sea looks so totally inviting!
I am quite glad they left the ruin and didn't sacrifice it for another infinity pool. Surprising, as done places will do anything in the name of tourist pleasing!
yeah, this is my favorite ocean near home.
My kids are totally spoiled being here over and over again. They absolutely hate Texas beaches. I have tried to take them there, I remember my 4 year old (at the time), looking at Galveston Beach, TX, said, "Dad, that is just a muddy puddle, there is no beach or ocean!"
You see the reference to Peppa Pig, I am sure. That is the last time they have been to Galveston!
Beautiful view! The colors of the water are really magnificent. And yes it is surprising that this site has survived, perhaps it was viewed as a great tourist site.
Yes. The first time it saw that water, now 15 years ago, I was mesmerized! This is the true Caribbean water color. People sometimes call it the “blue syrup”.
Definitely a room with a view, not quite as dramatic as my recent one at Pula in Croatia, but you got the seaview as well, bonus points for that
Never been to Croatia. Got to visit that sometime!
So many great things from the past we need to uncover. It's a wonder how they made those things with the things they have back then. Enjoy Cancun.
I am back already
Wow the bricks from Mayan civilization are meant to last for a long time.
they are surviving as of now.
It is a bit curious that these ruins have not been demolished.
I'm glad you can have those special moments, in such a particular place.
yes, they kept these sites as protected

That view from your condo in Cancun looks absolutely incredible! I can imagine how dynamic yet soothing it must have been to wake up to that every day. Spending four days by yourself with such a vista sounds like a perfect opportunity for both productivity and relaxation. I'm a little envious of that peaceful solitude!
thank you.
Wow! What a wonderful view! With such weather it must be very nice to travel there. And the old buildings on the seafront that have survived until now. Have a nice day
This sea is really amazing. I like it very much.
I like that amazing bricks that is near at the seashore. Such a good place to take a picture. The view is superb!!
The beach, the ruins, the sunsets—literally dream vacation vibes! Makes me want to plan a getaway too haha
OMG! What a beautiful view 😮 I really love beaches, I will always be amazed when I see this kind of view. The ruins add a sense of ancient mystery to the peaceful shoreline.
