Sort:

My husband and I would too, but with all the changes with Brexit, it would be much harder now.

When I lived there in 2007, The Netherlands was ranked as the best country to live in, followed by Canada, with some Scandinavian countrere. I'd have to see what the ranks are now.

Canada, really? That's where I'm from originally. I wonder where in Canada (it's a big country) and what that is based on (i.e. what the criteria is). 🤔

Ah, you're from Canada?!

It was based on things like:

  • Health care
  • Subsidised Work Week hours
  • Quality of life
  • Transparent govt practices
  • Cultural diversity
  • GDP ranking

and a few more things.

The ratings were not region-specific for Canada. TBH, I think all regions of Canada could qualify. Some might be more appealing than others, but there's also a strong cultural diversity, quality of life, and a country that's transparent and open for business I believe:)))

The winter in The Netherlands scared me, not sure how I would cope with Canada. I have relatives and friends, but haven't made it to Canada yet. What I do like is that they have definite changes of season. Not like the UK where it's summer and you might see the sun once.

Yeah Canada is all of those things I suppose. I'm from Ontario, which is arguably the worst province, other than the prairies lol. Weather-wise it's basically winter for 7 - 9 months of the year, followed by at least a month of rain and then for the remainder of the year it's so humid and hot that you can't go outside comfortably. You basically just feel sticky and gross all day. I've lived in a lot of places; British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, North Carolina U.S. and now France, and Ontario has had the worst weather by far. I'd say you get about 2 weeks to a month and a half of enjoyable weather, depending on the year.

Not seeing the sun for long periods of time would be a challenge for me as well though lol

Haha!
My brother lives in Alberta, but we are not close at all.

and now France

and how is your French? I studied French for two years when I lived in the UK. I was pretty good. NOT ANYMORE. I forget the languages as I stop using them. What happens though is that when I start learning a new language the last language that I learned comes back.
Studying German, my Spanish came back. Then I forgot both after not using them. Learning French, I kept speaking German in the class. Learning Tagalog and Visayan... brought back no memories of my French though. I think that French knowledge is lost. However, French is the only language that I did not learn curse words for...so that could be the reason.

You've lived many places...none tropical (YET)? Which is your fav so far? I guess Netherlands would be the country of choice for both you and your wife then.

My husband and I would choose Japan or Netherlands... He would love East Africa and Jamaica too.

I've been taking French lessons for a while now but it's not great. I can understand what people are saying better than I can speak but even that is far from good. I know enough to get by but I couldn't have a conversation with a person. Sounds like you have learned a lot of languages. That's awesome! Funny that each new one amplifies a different one hahaha.

I've never lived anywhere tropical but would like to. I prefer the heat over the cold for sure. I've never been to Asia but I would love to check out Japan. I've been to the Caribbean and liked it but never to Africa.

France is my favorite place to live so far. It's very diverse in terms of landscapes and each region is very different, so its great for intercountry travel. Food and wine are amazing, good weather, lots of history and culture, friendly people... it has everything. The only things it lacks are a language that I understand and me to be able to work, but those are my problems not the country's hahaha. I could probably live anywhere in Europe if it were possible.

Sorry to make a "mini-blog" from your post; but which Caribbean countries have you been to?
"You know Jamaicans think that 🇯🇲"JAMAICA"🇯🇲 is the Caribbean, right??"😂🙃...

At a beauty salon in the Philippines, one of the hairdressers came to me and said;

"What is the difference between Jamaica and Africa?"

Of course, you know I used 'such an opportunity' to explain:

"Jamaica, is the centre of the universe."...there was a German man without a sense of humour who didn't seem impressed by my response... so I added "It's Jamaica, and the rest of the world. Jamaica over all others." The man turned red, I thought he was gonna slap me... I continued explaining the continents to her and I pretended the German man was invisible 😅

France is my favorite place to live so far.

A country cottage in Southern France would make me content...but I would also struggle with the language. French has been one of the hardest languages for me to learn. Masculine and feminine, silent letters, etc. The one thing that makes sense for me is the sentence structure: Eg. "Ferme la bouche, s'il vous plait"... you see the polite "please" at the end? That makes more sense for me than the English way of putting the Please at the beginning. I like the way "Yoda" speaks...
I am team "Love, is all you need." not "All you need is love." 🤣🤣😂

I will limit my comments to not take up your time. Pardon my "mini-blogs" :))))
