The Sleepy Village of Hoorn

in Pinmapple2 years ago

Today we're heading to a small town located in the North Holland called Hoorn. It's a sleepy harbor town situated on the edge of the largest lake in the country, IJsselmeer lake (two vowels side by side in Hoorn, 🤔 two capital letters in IJsselmeer 🤔).

The day is cold and rainy and we are stuck in traffic on our drive. My wife is behind the wheel though so I'm taking photos in our car.

The bike lane on the right side of the bridge also acts as a dedicated tractor lane. It's the first time I've ever seen such a thing. I even saw a tractor using it just moments before.

It's not a great angle of me but here I am in one of my many plaid flannel shirts, standard attire for any Canadian.

We arrive around lunch time but the town is still pretty dead. You can't be called "sleepy" if youre a bustling city.

It's a Friday though, so perhaps there aren't many tourists out today and I'm sure that most of the locals are working.

Tables are set up in the main square but not a single person is sitting down at them. Maybe everyone is inside the restaurants and cafes, where it is warm and dry?

A Brief History

The golden age of Hoorn was back in the 17th century. At the time it was an important center for the Dutch East India Company, which was the largest enterprise to have ever existed up until that point in history. They specialized in the trade of textiles, silks and spices and made a lot of money at it.

Because of its booming trade, Hoorn was one of the more wealthy cities in the country along with Amsterdam and Enkhuizen and many historic buildings and monuments from that time can still be seen there to this day.

Over time it became increasingly more difficult for Hoorn to compete with Amsterdam though and eventually it lost its status as a major international port city.

Eventually it became just a small sleepy fishing village that mainly traded with locals and neighboring communities.

For lunch today we are having kibbeling. It's battered fish chunks covered in spices and served with a garlic sauce. It's delicious and in my opinion a must try snack in the country. Pickled herring is also very good. We try to get one or the other or both every time we visit the country.

I didn't do a lot of planning for our visit today, and that was an oversight on my part. We missed seeing the old harbor, which apparently has an interesting looking tower near it and an old historic ship in the water. Damn.

We are touring some of the streets and neighborhoods though and they are quite nice.

20220429_130639~2.jpg

They're lined with traditional homes and buildings, many of which are now artisinal shops. I really like the strangley slanted facades. They look to be leaning into the street itself. I just like wonky angles I suppose.

The old churches in the Netherlands often have scenes depicting death on their outsides. I always find that to be interesting and unique as well.

A quick stroll along the water brings us past some nice looking homes with some nice gardens and patios in the back.

20220429_140940~2.jpg

It's cold by the water though and I'm in shorts, like an idiot, so it's time to head back to the heated seats of our vehicle.

20220429_141113~2.jpg

It's time to say goodbye the sleepy village with two vowels in its name.

Goodbye Hoorn.

Well thats it for now. If you are interested in seeing more of our trip to the Netherlands than stay tuned, there's more to come. Until next time, thanks for stopping by.

Hi @leaky20 👋🏻
The IJ is the same in dutchyland as your Y. So in the order it is written here you have to see it as 1 letter. So both need to be capitals.

Hoorn is cute and not much going on. But for a wander around it is pretty. I love the cute little row houses with pointy roofs.

Oooo Kibbeling I so love them. Maybe one day when I travel back again.
Great photographs of the village and around it.
Thanks for sharing.

That's interesting and good to know. Thanks for clarifying. Language can be very challenging. There are so many strange rules and nuisances, and every language has their own way of doing things.

Yeah kibbeling so sooooo delicious 😋. I love it.

You are welcome @leaky20 😁
Yes, every language has it’s own little challenges 😉

One of the first things I always get going to the sea in Dutchyland. 😋

Kibbeling! You are so lucky! I miss the pickled haring (herring) and who doesn't love those croquettes! The architecture of the rowhouses is one of my favorite types of housing. I really liked the Netherlands and the Dutch people.

I don't think I drove that much there unless leaving town, but, biked everywhere, even with a baby trailer. I think it was one of my favorite countries, although Italy was really, really close.

I am glad you are really getting all the travel in. When you go home, you won't believe how much you miss it there!

Great post, as always!

Yeah pickled herring is really good too. We didn't get it this trip unfortunately.

The country is great for biking. The infrastructure is amazing. They pretty much built their cities around cycling it seems. I wish we had better infrastructure like that back home. I'm not a fan of biking on busy streets 12 inches away from speeding cars.

When you go home, you won't believe how much you miss it there!

I know I'm going to miss it a lot. I'm already looking at things like pastries, bread, and wine and sighing.

Double vowels, double capitals, now I know where we get the phrase "it's all double dutch to me"

I've never heard that phrase before but it's pretty funny 😂

it is quite common over here, well in the older generation anyways
https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/double+Dutch#:~:text=(British%20English%2C%20informal)%20language,all%20double%20Dutch%20to%20me!

The kibbeling looks delicious. I got addicted to croquettes when I was there. Sometimes in the middle of the night, I'd ride to the corner shop on the Breestraat in Leiden to get my fix 🤣. My Dutch friends always warned me that it was delicious but not the healthiest.

The buildings and architecture are amazing. Those tall narrow buildings are a trademark of the Dutch.
This post made me nostalgic. Made me wonder how different my perception of the Netherlands and the Dutch way of living would be, now that I have more exposure living in different countries. It took me some time to acclimatize, but even just by looking at the buildings, and I feel much excitement :)))

Yeah croquettes are also good for sure. We didn't eat a lot of them but they are definitly delicious. I don't think that kibbeling is very healthy either since it's battered and deep fried. The delicious stuff is never healthy unfortunately haha.

It's great that you've been able to live in multiple countries. Which has been your favorite so far?

My favourite was the Netherlands✅
Cycling - I love cycling✅,
Canals - I love ✅, simple living, pragmatism, and their belief in people doing what feels natural. Orange, is my favourite colour, I support the 'dirty dutch' boys in football, their direct speech and a whole lot more.....this comment was publish while I was still typing 😅...hence the edit :)))

All good reasons for a place to be a favorite. My wife and I have said many times that we would live in the Netherlands if we were able to.

My husband and I would too, but with all the changes with Brexit, it would be much harder now.

When I lived there in 2007, The Netherlands was ranked as the best country to live in, followed by Canada, with some Scandinavian countrere. I'd have to see what the ranks are now.

Canada, really? That's where I'm from originally. I wonder where in Canada (it's a big country) and what that is based on (i.e. what the criteria is). 🤔

Ah, you're from Canada?!

It was based on things like:

  • Health care
  • Subsidised Work Week hours
  • Quality of life
  • Transparent govt practices
  • Cultural diversity
  • GDP ranking

and a few more things.

The ratings were not region-specific for Canada. TBH, I think all regions of Canada could qualify. Some might be more appealing than others, but there's also a strong cultural diversity, quality of life, and a country that's transparent and open for business I believe:)))

The winter in The Netherlands scared me, not sure how I would cope with Canada. I have relatives and friends, but haven't made it to Canada yet. What I do like is that they have definite changes of season. Not like the UK where it's summer and you might see the sun once.

Hoorn is a beautiful village, its streets still empty even at around lunch time is quite fascinating :) Great to have tagged along through your photos :) Cheers!

Cheers 🍻

That lunch sure looks inviting😋

And you took really good shots though.

Glad you liked it 😁

🤗🤗

The village is really beautiful and you took a very nice shots. The village got the name "sleepy" because its not a bustling village haha 😹

Thanks. I'm glad you liked them 😊
